Powering Today's libraries -

Until recently, until I had not been to a library in more than 10 years.

It's not that I do not love books, but with so much traveling as I do, I have to be dependent on my Kindle, iPad, surface ... and, well, you get the picture ,

a few months ago I had the opportunity to visit a couple of library systems in California. IMPRESSIVE! I was blown away. Today's library is so much more than just books. The library concept has adapted to give its patrons access to all information that is available today. Today's library has public computers for patrons to surf the Web, access to the library database, films on DVD or to use the Internet, also do their banking or working on their business books.

Orange County Public Libraries have around 850 public desktop PCs. The OC Community Resources IT team of 25 were distributed before a daunting task these machines by managing 33 branches.

"How true, but others want to see in every public service, some people use it, what they do with it can" says Clyde Gamboa, head of information technology. "People would try to save things, delete things or download programs."

Another Northern California library faced similar challenges. fighting security concerns of viruses and malware only the operating system of the computer keep "gold image" updated with the latest security patches and versions of the software, not just to mention plain old malicious users to delete files or Windows Registry settings ,

media had to change.

are Citrix XenDesktop technical staff have the tools they reduce libraries today complexity and costs of managing their environment.

This allowed Orange County Public Library about $ 660,000 saved on PC purchases alone . Provisioning Service (PVS), with XenDesktop Enterprise and Platinum editions include the libraries image management can optimize not only for the new virtualized PC, but also for physical desktops for applications that could make a special hardware required. Orange County was able to reduce the number of images that they had to manage to three.

Now, when someone logs off their session the Virtual Desktop resets to the gold image. No worries about the pesky deleted files or malware that could have gotten downloaded. Each patron personal data is now safer since held no personal information from session to session. XenDesktop also offers the possibility of easy to use personal USB sticks, which can be accessed from the virtual meeting, so that the user's personal files that they need to work.

Orange County repurposed PCs used to access the Citrix XenDesktop system, and we are working with other library systems with inexpensive thin clients to explore, to reach the environment. I have to explore the entire work, to use the $ 35.00 Raspberry Pi2 as a thin client done by colleagues Citrites Muhammad @ Citrix, Yi Lu and @martinrowan.

It is not here, either do not stop! I work with a number of library systems across the country to explore how we can use other technologies such as Citrix or Melio Share File, to facilitate the supply of images across all lines. I'm going to another blog these projects.

So, stop by your local library and check out more than just a book!
