In a recent blog, my colleague, Pete Downing, described how to take advantage of one of the local modes of XenDesktop, XenClient Enterprise, to migrate users off Windows XP given its imminent end of life early next year. If you are considering such a move, you can move your users either Windows 7 or Windows 8 running as a VM guest on XenClient. We supported Windows 7 for a while, then, in this blog, I will highlight the capabilities of Windows 8 and 8.1.
Microsoft introduces Windows 8 in the fourth quarter of 2012 as a key component of their mobility strategy. XenClient is a key component of XenDesktop and is a key pillar of the Citrix activation "of mobile workstyles. XenClient and bring Windows 8 thus provides a perfect complement that allows it to centrally manage and update the image of Windows 8 in the data center while giving users the power of local computation offline.
The following features, introduced XenClient 4.5 and XenClient 5, activate Windows 8 and touch desktops, laptops and all-in-one:
- XenClient paravirtualization tools for Windows 8 for better performance in guest
- Windows 8 WDDM for improved performance 2D graphics
- a full range of resolution capabilities of native device
- dual monitor support for maximum productivity
- multi-touch / gesture support for a guest VM affecting the touch USB device to the VM
- support picture mode for personal vDisk ( PVD), shared and customized images, delivered and managed by the Synchronizer for XenClient platform
so, if you want to deploy or even just to evaluate Windows 8, we invite to try it on XenClient as a virtual machine host managed. We welcome your comments on your calendar for Windows 8 deployment within your organization and on what devices you deploy it. And here XenClient hardware compatibility list to get you started.
