A day does not pass that I find myself explaining why DaaS is not synonymous with VDI - and neither term does justice to the actual range of possible value.
Both end users and service providers have a preconceived idea that DaaS just means the delivery of an "office". But this mindset VDI simplistic style (and only office mindset) does not describe the true range of services possible. On the contrary, the terms we should really use are " Workspaces Hosted " or " Workspace-as-a-Service ".
So I suggest a number of reasons why think "Virtual Desktop" = "Desktop-as-a-service" underestimate what is really possible.
1. "VDI" is just one more infrastructure model
VDI was narrowly defined as a single desktop on one server delivered to another system elsewhere on the network. But it is not particularly effective use of the infrastructure, and not (necessarily) mean that the supply mechanism will ensure a high quality user experience. But more importantly, there are a number of other infrastructure models that much more efficient use computing and network infrastructure. Such as when the servers, virtual machines, and even partial window images are shared.
2. Cloud hosted desktops include HD GPU support graphics and
Nor does use of VDI means you get the poor visual support RDS. modern protocols such as Citrix HDX and HDX 3D means that you get full fidelity graphics and video - even using available codecs and GPU (Graphics Processing Units) that adjust bandwidth, encoding latency and real-time media optimize the experience.
3. "DaaS" is not just a desktop - but provides map apps too
When most people hear "DaaS" they assume what is delivered is a complete desktop (after all, isn 't that the definition?). But often, using a desktop computer as a container for applications is not necessary . It is quite possible to deliver Windows applications outside office container, as does Citrix XenApp. And when you deliver "a la carte" out of the office applications, which can be considered as DaaS, too.
4. Cloud hosted desktops include app stores ... and Single Sign-On for web applications ... and more
again, we must free limit thinking that the Cloud- based service that you get to be a single desktop computer with a connection. And all other Web applications and services you consume regularly accessed and authenticated separately. For example, Citrix Receiver is the "portal" through which end users can access a desktop DaaS (if they like) and / or applications to map of DaaS (if they prefer). But it is also a portal through which they can access on-prem, off-prem hosted, and that their IT administration (or hosting provider) off-prem provision Web services. And once the user authenticates against Receiver, they SSO to ALL applications and DTS contained in the receiver "app store".
5. modern DaaS services now include mobile device management
DaaS means only cloud hosted desktops (or applications) operate in a sandbox on a device that is otherwise outside the management area. providers today have the opportunity to gather in Mobile Device Management (MDM) as XenMobile. This allows granular control of device providing even better security, compliance and data integrity. So the real support BYOD programs is now a reality.
6. DaaS Follow me now includes data
Yep. Not only a wired disk on your desktop. Rather, you can get real data Follow me through all of your devices, and shared applications and hosted desktops. And all centrally managed by the service provider
So, when a service provider -. Or client - said they want me DaaS, the first thing I ask back is "Do you really only want an ordinary desktop computer?"
