Citrix Support Secrets: XenApp Migration Webinar Q & A -

March 31, 2013 saw the end of life in some versions of XenApp, so we held a special webinar to discuss how to migrate from version 4.5 and 5.0 on Windows Server 03 to the 6.5 version of XenApp. During the webinar a series of questions were asked, see answers below

Q :. Can Migrate to PS4.0 XA6.5

[?

in short, no, there is no direct way to migrate to Presentation Server 4.0 to XenApp 6.5 and migration tool in XenApp 6.5 does not support the migration of Presentation Server 4.0

the source system must be 5.0 XA with HRP5 minimum for the XA 6.5 tool to function. The operating system is either Windows or Windows 08r1 03.

Q: AppDNA not part of the company Licesence if we are to migrate to XenApp application we do not have tool to verify application compatibility?

XenApp is application compatibility 100% when applications are developed in accordance with the guidelines Terminal Services development.

http://support.citrix.com/servlet/ KbServlet / download / 24195-102-673932 / App 20Del%%% 20XenApp 20XenDesktop.pdf

Q: is there a there way to verify the application is supported in XenApp

once an application is developed within Terminal services development guidelines, it will be compatible with XenApp and is likely to be published. The verification test kit Citrix XenApp application is an excellent tool: http://www.citrix.com/partner-programs/citrix-ready/test.html

Q: Can I choose which publiched applicatins to migrate or do I take them all as a package?

object types Yes, using Powershell and the indirect method, you can specify and named objects to include and exclude from the migration. You can also explicitly specify 32-bit applications to migrate; their paths will be converted to Program Files (x86) so they will launch properly in the 64-bit environment farm

Q :. Can I download XenApp version 6.5 test our Citrix? website

Yes: http://www.citrix.com/downloads/xenapp.html

Q: Can we export the config 4.5 presentation of a farm?

no, there is no direct way to migrate to Presentation Server 4.5 to XenApp 6.5 and the migration tool in XenApp 6.5 does not support the migration of Presentation Server 4.5 . The source system must be 5.0 XA with HRP5 minimum for the XA 6.5 tool to function. The operating system is either Windows 08r1, Windows 08R2 and Windows 03.

Q: Can we have whitepapers on benifits using XenApp 6.5

Yes: http://support.citrix.com/product/xa/v6.5_08r2/whitepaper/

Q: Can you do the cross-domain migration also long as you have administrator in both areas?

Yes, it is recommended to have the same domain Administrator account on both servers during the migration process for better results. area information is not migrated. Also check the integration of policies in Active Directory would need the policys AD Citrix to migrate if you are not in the same field

Q :. Can you migrate / upgrade on the same server. Meaning of the source and destination are on the same server?

No, the migration of the battery is a database migration process and would require a separate server to migrate to. XenApp 6.5 are not supported on a Windows 03 Server

Q :. Do GIGO apply? If I just started this job retired old farms, and they are generally poorly designed and deployed, it seems I should just build new well designed farms.

In some cases, that could be applied when the existing structure may not be suitable for migration and a new firm might be the best solution. This choice would really be at the discretion of the network / IT administrator Planner

Q: Will there be any support for windows 2012 in the near future

Yes, this is planned for a future version of XenApp / XenDesktop the 2013 T2, Excalibur project

Q :. I read to improve performance HD, moving to another drive user profile, is recommended, and how would I go about this.

initial application launches or (First Launch) can be slower especially in streaming applications through profile management, but it can be accelerated using a VHD as indicated page 3 of this doc: https: //www.citrix.com/content/dam/citrix/en_us/documents/products/Citrix_XenApp_6.5_Comparative_Feature_Matrix.pdf

There are also equivalent Microsoft this design as indicated on Microsoft TechNet

. Q: XenApp 6.5 supports former webclient which is used in Citrix 4.5

[

Install the latest version of any receivers, plug-ins, and agents? you use. At the time of its release, XenApp 6.5 was tested with Receiver for Windows 3.0 (with plug-in 13.0). The plug-in Citrix Online (web and full) 12.1 has also been tested and can be used, but some XenApp 6.5 features will not be available. Older versions will not be available for download and are not supported

. Q: Can I use a 6.5 server using my 4.5 license? Or do I have a new license?

Your old licenses must still work, but it is necessary to bring your version of the license server up 11.9 100% compatibility with XenApp 6.5.

Note: new versions of the license server are compatible with older versions of the product: http://support.citrix.com/proddocs/topic/licensing-119/lic- upgrade.html # lic-upgrade

Q: I have two servers 4.5 and XenApp 5 on my farm. Can I create a new farm on a new 2k8R2 server using my existing license? Or do I need a new license? If I need a new license, which would make my migration is much more difficult.

Provided you have valid licenses, you can update your version of the license server and upgrade the license files to the latest version: http: // Support .citrix.com / proddocs / topic / licensing-119 / lic-lic-upgrade upgrade.html #

Q: Is it still possible to use the same front end (interface Web access / gateway / NetScaler) to access a xenapp 4.5 and XenApp 6.5?

Yes, but it is recommended to run the latest versions of product software, if possible, to benefit from the security and feature enhancements: http: //support.citrix .com / proddocs / topic / xenapp65-w2k8 / ps-system-requirements-w2k8-xa65.html

Q: Does the indirect method used when making existing agricultural level (compared to the migration to new servers)

No, the indirect method allows migration in a phased approach using PowerShell ?. effectively copy the settings from the farm and to apply them to a time convenient to the administrator, instead of a complete migration between 2 XenApp servers networked using GUI migration tool then

Q :. Will documentation on how to "upgrade" existing farm versus "migration" to the new farm

Yes: http: //support.citrix. com / servlet / KbServlet / download / 1704- 102-671543 / technical% 20Guide% 20for% 20Upgrading% 20or% 20Migrating% 20to% 20XenApp% 205% 2010-23.pdf

Q If you use version 6.0 on server 08? r2, is it possible to do an inplace upgrade to 6.5

No, but it is an upgrade utility: http://support.citrix.com/article / CTX130614

Q: He said that no user can be on the farm 6.5. Users must also be out of the XA 5 and closes when running the tool?

is highly recommended for database performance as much as any reason not many users are connected to the XenApp server as possible. No logged would be the ideal situation.

This will also limit the changes to the battery configuration being lost during migration issues and logon performance and reduce the risk of migration because of performance issues

Q: We have an application that works to 4.5 because of a UIhook setting in the registry; However, it was not able to run it in 6.5. What can you suggest for this?

Because of architectural changes in Windows 08 and 08R2 and also in XenApp 5.0, 6.0 and 6.5 some registry settings have changed enough that they will no longer work the same way as they did in previous versions, indeed MMHooks are no longer needed in XenApp 6.0 / 6.5 as XA now uses Microsoft integrated pilot for multi monitor operations.

the best advice in this case would be to register a case with support to see if a newer version of the product has a fix for the specific issue or a different workaround help in this case maybe

Q :. We configured the IP loadbalancing based on site and the Workers. but when added to the webserver for Netscaler loadbalancing, normal loadbalacing does not.

The best option would be to connect a case with Citrix NetScaler support team because they should be able to share best practices on how NetScaler handles traffic network and influence of load balancing in XenApp. It will really depend on how the NetScaler is configured

. Q: What happens to the farm from the source after migration? Does the migration tool "demolish" the old farm? Ot he leave everythign intact in the old farm

The farm source will always be intact - just copy the migration tool and the moves data from one location to other in a very specific manner.

Q: What if we use an Access datastore on XA 5? Do we have to migrate to sql db first, then upgrade to 6.5? Or access db still work on 6.5

For this you must run the utility to MigrateToSqlExpress :? Http://support.citrix.com/proddocs/topic/xenapp5fp-w2k3 /ps-datastore-migrate-intro.html

Q: What if you are already being performance applications in the farm 6.5 (most applications and users are still out of 5, even running under the farm 5), how it will be affected by the migration to this way?

Not supported. To begin the transition to XenApp 6.5, administrators need to migrate to a new farm and therefore have the following options: Create new XenApp 6.5 farm and configure all settings manually

Create new XenApp 6.5 farm and migrate settings from. an existing presentation Server 4.5, XenApp 5 XenApp 6.0 and XenApp 6.5 farm

Q: What if you have several farms, different versions being migrated to 6.5

in this case, the license files and versions of the license server would need to be the correct version that can support a cost XenApp 6.5 further refines the installation process and configuration. Migration to this new version of XenApp is required due to architectural changes. mixed farms and upgrades direct previous versions in place are not supported; however, Citrix XenApp Migration Center provides and upgrade PowerShell script to help ensure a smooth transition.

These tools allow migration of operating parameters from a battery source and automation uninstall XenApp 6 and XenApp 6.5 installation process for the member servers, respectively. The Migration Centre is explained later in this document.

http://support.citrix.com/servlet/KbServlet/download/28732-102-671615/

Q: What are the points of concern dois- I consider when migrating 5.0 and 6.5 and the "Single Sign on" option

covered on page 21 of the migration guide: http: // Support .citrix.com / servlet / KbServlet / download / 28732-102-671615 /

Q: When will the application migration automatically disable the view in the new farm

If the administrator chooses not to automatically configure groups of workers and server mappings, and applications will not be visible until it is configured

All applications are listed. However, for the corresponding working group to associate with the application, the application must be published to any server specified in the server mapping file. Only users that can be solved on the new server farm (account authorities that are trusted in the new farm) are migrated

http://support.citrix.com/proddocs/topic/xenapp65- migrating / ps-migrate-XA6 post-migrate-tasks.html

Q: Is working with 6.5 Server 2012 and will be the new work first release with 08 R2

XenApp 6.5 does not yet work with Windows Server 2012, but is fully supported with Windows Server 08R2. The first edition of "XenApp" to load Windows 2012 will be releasing Excalibur Project in Q2 2013.

Q: Is it possible to migrate a farm settings for a data center to another? And who are the network / firewall ports must be open to having a communication?

For direct migration of a firewall can block a migration framework and can cause failure. At present a document does not exist map all firewall options needed to be opened, perhaps for security reasons. Indirect migration using PowerShell could be an alternative where access to firewall settings are a barrier to migration

Q: Is there a recommendation on Powershell Version to use for migration XA

Yes, Powershell 2.0 or higher and level * 64-bit if possible

Q :. If the migration failed, there is a way to rollback the changes

No rolling necessarily back the changes, but it is possible to understand what went wrong and then run the tool several times until it succeeds.

After the steps of pre migration? is the best defense against possible problems:

  • Update FTA set
  • If the source farm uses file type associations for published applications, make sure they are updated by running "types of update files from the recording option" in the console Delivery services (AppCenter for XenApp 6.5)
  • Run dscheck the source farm with appropriate switches to ensure consistency
  • dscheck / full apps
  • dscheck / full groups
  • dscheck / full servers
  • dscheck / complete files
  • dscheck / full printers

Q: do you have recommendations for 16-bit applications and 32-bit are not supported on 64-bit Windows?

The best policy in this case is to stay with the Citrix Support recommendations on supporting the implementation of the inheritance whether for XenApp 5.0. 6.0 or 6.5. It may be necessary to keep an older version of XenApp published if 16bit applications are a necessity for the future

Q :. Is there a document on best practices for cloning XenApp 6.5 servers (physical and virtual servers (Hyper-V))

Yes: http: //support.citrix. com / proddocs / topic / xenapp65-install / ps-image-prep.html

Q: will there be any migration to XenApp 4 on the Solaris platform platforms for Solaris 10 Update 9 x86?

Not at the moment

Q :. there will be options for extended support for XenApp 4.5 w2k3 R2? We have applications that still run on 32bit?

Extended support is available on some products while Citrix partner or support sales rep will let you know the exact options available.

Q: You keep mentioning that the tool is "in motion" parameters, is it really "moving" it is the settings or "copy" settings? Is it really change the source farm or servers on this farm

If you use the direct migration model, it is actually doing both :? Http://support.citrix.com/servlet/ KbServlet / download / 28732-102-671615 / but should not change the settings for the source farm and agricultural source server registry settings will not be transferred
