The engineering team for the Citrix AppDNA application migration software is in the midst of looking for the next version Microsoft Windows Blue, focusing on the discovery of the types of application compatibility problems that will occur in a typical business application portfolio. The R & D activities are numerous, but include things like manual testing applications in our test library, the digestion of information in the field of Citrix partners, and writing sample applications that demonstrate the issue subject of research. The objective of this process is to find the application compatibility issues, and to develop a model that can be applied to the universe of applications that identifies those affected by the issue. I thought compatibility curious application or as gurus of mind would be interested in a peek behind the scenes.

At its core, extracts and stores the DNA of a APPDNA application without having to install or run the application. This topic has been written about at length I will not go there, but for those of you new AppDNA remember that the building blocks of an application have been extracted and stored. In fact, DNA stored by AppDNA is so vast that the process and the scope of DNA extraction rarely changes.

Now it's time to see how these algorithms APPDNA come together to identify compatibility issues across thousands of applications. I thought it would be interesting to focus on an algorithm that was recently written for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012.

Kernel-mode drivers not signed by a trusted publisher

on 64-bit versions of Windows 8 and Server 2012 or Windows 8 with Secure Boot enabled, drivers who are not signed by a trusted certificate authority fail to load. Depending on how an application uses the driver may not start or certain aspects of the application could simply not function properly. To develop an algorithm that detects this question there is a couple of key controls to be performed. First, identify the applications that install kernel-mode drivers. Second, ensure that the drivers are signed and that the signature was generated by a trusted certificate authority.

Identification of kernel-mode drivers is something AppDNA has been done for years and we have several well tested heuristic algorithms to make such identification. Sometimes DNA installer identifies a driver as kernel mode, sometimes a corresponding INF done as well. As a final check AppDNA look to see if a binary called Kernel Mode driver API. The DNA for installers, INF and binary files of API calls in our database in order to perform this check is a simple SQL query.

Each pilot identified in kernel mode, we then check to see if it is signed and if so by what certification authority. certificate information for all signed binaries is also stored in the database AppDNA. At this point, if a driver is not signed then the algorithm will report failure. If the driver is signed then AppDNA lies in the signing certificate authority for later.

In addition to storing DNA on applications, the database also has stores operating DNA AppDNA system that customers can load much the same way they load applications. As a part of DNA of the operating system, the database contains information describing AppDNA the certificate chain on the operating system image. Using the signature certification authority and the certificate chain of the operating system of the algorithm simply walking the certificate chain until it identifies the certificate as trusted or untrusted. Based on this finding algorithms can accurately report the success or failure as required. AppDNA even allows customers to upload multiple OS images in the same time, so if a company manages multiple OS images the algorithm can be run on all these images in a single pass.

So there you have it, an automated process to detect kernel-mode drivers not signed by a trusted publisher. Using AppDNA, this algorithm can run through thousands of applications and OS multiple images in minutes. So perhaps APPDNA algorithms are not magic once you get an understanding of how they work, very cool, but not magic.

April 8, 2014 marks the end of Windows XP support. According to Microsoft.

"That means you have to take action after April 8, 2014, there will be no new security updates, non-security hotfixes free or paid assisted support options or updated technical content online. "

One of the first things you will do to fix your Windows XP to Windows 8 migration is test your existing applications for compatibility of the planned new Windows client platform. I have compiled a list of Top 10 questions that will be, and yet affect Windows 8 deployment in your organization. I used Citrix AppDNA Software 6.3 application compatibility to gather information on the basis of 35 randomly selected applications that work on Windows XP. Note that I have deliberately omitted the remediation actions to most of these questions, and only included those commonly known and obvious.

These questions concern not only the migration to a new Windows client platform. Companies currently using Windows XP and deploy Citrix XenApp or Citrix XenDesktop meet sooner or later, these questions and more. For XenApp 6.5, we must ensure that the application runs on Windows Server 08 R2 (which is 64 bits by adding another layer compatibility problems are not addressed in this article), and the ability to operate in a desktop remote / TS capacity. For XenDesktop, we must consider that the application should be able to run on the Windows platform target that will be used and whether this platform will be 64-bit.

Currently, to set the parameters required by the Director, a command line tool is provided and the plant manager. With 2012 drawing to a close, I saw a slight increase in requests from clients about the migration options for their former vdesk RingCube deployments. For those of you not familiar with this product, it is a workspace virtualization solution that fundamentally separate Windows installation in two parts - the host part and the part of the workspace. The workspace has functioned as a "light VM" in the sense that he behaved like a single machine had its own host name and the Active Directory identity, and could be managed much like a regular VM (application installations, etc.). Unlike a virtual machine, however, he used the Windows installation on the host machine and does not need an additional deployment of the operating system and associated patching concerns.

Initially vDesk has been adapted to run on physical parameters (later, we added support for running in a VDI environment). Over the years, improved protocols, increased bandwidth, and data center costs declined. When Citrix RingCube joined last year, VDI deployments were common, and it was one of the reasons RingCube had in the meantime developed a specific product for VDI (now known as the Personal vDisk, a feature built into XenDesktop and VDI-in-a-box).

Like their maintenance contracts expire vdesk, customers are now reaching their sales teams to upgrade and migration options. When a replacement exam (there really is not a direct channel of migration to workspaces vDesk) solution, I heard common concerns:

• The new solution must be secure - no data on the parameters (or data encryption to endpoint)
• the new solution must provide high performance (video / voice / multimedia)
• the new solution must be scalable (thousands of users) and easy to maintain (especially updates and upgrades)

I was headed to XenDesktop and XenApp customers for options to upgrade, and suggesting that they also take a look at Excalibur because it has support for applications and workstations (and also includes the personal vDisk feature for customers who need it). Of course, all the above recommendations address the above concerns in an easy to understand format. Customers who have deployed vDesk on physical parameters (or used workspace check-in / check-out capability vDesk) XenClient Enterprise would probably find a good fit today because it offers / experience based setting off similar line. If the planned migration of a customer is due to occur in the immediate short term, there are already good solutions we can offer in the existing XenDesktop, XenApp and XenClient products (in case the client can not afford to wait Excalibur).

Of course, this is not a one-size-fits situation and each client has unique needs, but between XenDesktop, XenApp today, and solutions that XenClient and Citrix on tap in Excalibur, we were able to offer compelling recommendations for the migration away from vDesk.

Introduction

The authentication is a simple concept. the user's credentials are passed to a Web Interface and XenApp / XenDesktop servers, preventing users from having to explicitly authenticate at any time during the process of launching the Citrix application. Although this authentication method seems simple, there are few moving parts, and this article aims to break these down to provide a more detailed understanding of how the process really works within Citrix

Authentication Pass-Through -. Web Interface site

The first step of the transition process occurs on the Web Interface site. Users are able to browse the site for the Web interface, and their powers are passed through and they are presented with their Citrix resources delivered. Web interface is built on Internet Information Services (IIS). For pass-through authentication to work, the IIS Windows Integrated Authentication must be utilized. Formerly called NTLM, this authentication method hashes the user credentials before they are sent over the network. When this type of authentication is enabled, the client browser proves that it is authenticated by a cryptographic exchange with the Web Interface server, involving hashing. Because of this, the Web browser is responsible for authentication with the Web Interface server (IIS). It is important to note, however, that the powers are never actually exchanged. Instead, the signed hash is provided for IIS, prove that said user has already been authenticated on the Windows desktop. The user of the Web interface uses the AD user context (sometimes called a token) to recover membership in an AD group to the user and to transmit this list of groups directly in XML service for authentication. At this point, the user has passed the Web Interface site and can now see his / her Citrix resources.

• The WI server must be in the same domain as the user, or a domain that has a trusted relationship with the domain of the user.
