Studio simplifies management in Excalibur - Part I -

Over the past two weeks a series of blogs emerged that provide an overview of some of the upcoming enhancements to XenApp and XenDesktop; focusing on FlexCast 2.0, with Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8, provisioning with PVS, and many other great themes for the coming month. For those lucky enough to go to Synergy Barcelona, you may have caught a taste of the Excalibur Tech Preview at Keynote Mark T, the Avalon Excalibur Tech Preview Demo Pod or maybe you joined the thousands of people who downloaded the Tech Preview. If you have not had time to install the Tech Preview, or you did not go to Synergy and want Excalibur failure of the action, this video interview courtesy of Gabe Knuth to BrianMadden.com.

What is perhaps inevitable is that XenApp and XenDesktop are unified into a single platform and management architecture; not so much a product replacing the other, it is rather on how they merge together and make the product easier for our customers.

In this first of two blogs, I want to share what you can expect under this unified management experience.

Studio simplifies management in Excalibur

one of my favorite pictures Excalibur out of the Product Design Department (yes, Citrix now has a dedicated product design team working closely with administrators and engineering for the design of the user experience!).

XenApp, XenDesktop, EdgeSight, Profile Management and StoreFront are unified by Excalibur

What this graph shows better than anything I could put together using PPT graphics, is thus clearly how all the basic components together into a unified platform that is capable of delivering applications and desktops. What is missing from the chart is the management console, now called Studio. The management console is the lens through which all Admins see a product, as well as design and ease of use of this impacts their daily lives interface. In fact, you could not go too far wrong if you imagined the word 'Studio' within the white circle marked "Excalibur" in this graphic! Proof of unification effort is abundant in the console Excalibur Studio.

The studio's next generation, available on Excalibur overview tech can have you up and running in three simple steps if you want to create a new deployment

Step 1 -. Develop infrastructure by configuring and testing the connections to the hypervisor (XenServer, HyperV or vSphere are supported), storage, license server and the database

Step 2 - Create the pool of machines that can be used host applications and desktops (Create machine Catalog more on this in part II of the blog). Improvements in supply technologies in Excalibur mean XenApp servers can now be provided using Machine Creation Services (MCS), Provisioning Services (PVS) or 3 rd third-party tools (for example, whether to use physical servers), something that has been available for some versions XenDesktop now; see Patrick Blog supply

Step 3 -. You are now just a few clicks to deliver hosted shared desktops, applications and VDI desktops to users by creating delivery groups (Create Group Deliver more on this in Part II). Which is smooth is how the workflow integrates everything you need to offer a user experience; we will explore this in the next section. Watch this video about creating delivery groups if you want to see it all in action.

Tailoring the user experience

studio assistants include all the parameters you need to deliver a great experience for your end users; the ability to create profiles on the fly, or select one created earlier. Whether you choose Citrix roaming profiles or redirected documents and settings, the choice is yours. I can not say too much more about management integration profile without stealing the thunder of Dave W so you will need to wait his blog. the creation of the policy is included as well, so you can customize the HDX user experience; to learn more about this in Derek's blog on the user experience.

Studio integrates with profile management

workflows based on intent, validate user input

The participation of a dedicated product design team ensured that the workflow issues arise intuitive Directors, depending on what they are trying to deliver to their end users and not wait for them to choose from a list of complicated options. Assistants also forgive Admin to set up the wrong system; in the example below the address of the delivery controller is enabled, this includes making sure that it is running the controller services, similar controls to ensure that you can connect to the database , provisioning or the license server. If you have ever had to spend time to resolve a configuration problem, all because you had a typo? User input validation is your safety net and prevent you from making mistakes like these. Ultimately the possible configuration tests both from within Studio or scripted via PowerShell, which means administrators are notified of problems arising from changes in infrastructure, for example caused by maintenance activities on week- end. All surefire ways to ensure that Excalibur is operational!

Validating the controller address

This is to come in Part II?

Stay tuned for Part II of this blog, I will cover the editing applications and desktops to users catalogs machines created in studio from a single console.
