The XenServer software ecosystem
resourcesXenServer was becoming Besides investing to ensure we work well with software and third-party tools and our customers demand high-quality software products that work on XenServer and the rest of their systems. Customers want to use a feature-rich specialized software such as the level of anti-virus software brand 1 vendors such as Symantec, Trend Micro, CA Technologies and NetApp.
Many of our customers say it is important for them to protect themselves by maintaining the option to change their infrastructure and move workloads around on a hybrid infrastructure consisting of physical hardware, multiple hypervisors the desktop deployments and even public clouds. There are a wide range of solutions that integrate XenServer available, including:
- backup and disaster recovery management that allow you to orchestrate backups on multiple hypervisors and physical infrastructure vendors such as Symantec, PHD Virtual, Quadric Software and SEP
- security products, including Kaspersky, Trend Micro and McAfee
- Web tools, self-service, Linux alternatives of in XenCenter and mobile applications as sixteenth and HypOps
- XenServer products to integrate into other management tools such as ComTrade (Microsoft System Center Operations Manager integration), the hyperlink (XenServer integrated into vCenter)
- monitoring and capacity planning products CA Nimsoft, eG Innovations, Goliath and Lanamark
- sophisticated workload balancing as VMTurbo
- Better storage configuration products such as Virtual storage NetApp console
We have presented some of the above products on our new XenServer Web site; these and many other products are also detailed in the Citrix Ready Market Place, where you can find supported and certified products for XenServer and other Citrix products.
Why Open Sourcing Ecosystem helps our
Citrix XenServer is now open source
The advantages for software development are compelling :.
- The developers making XenServer products are able to read all of our interfaces and the underlying code, ensuring that their products interact optimally with XenServer. This reduces misunderstandings and contributes to the study interoperability issues while products in development that would not be possible on a closed source hypervisor
- partners and customers are able to see and plan future product roadmaps as they will be able to see XenServer code improvements as they occur throughout the development cycle
- a XenServer superior: interoperability testing with server, storage and software will be quicker and more transparent, waiting for the beta builds with this Agile approach
- more innovation and functionality: partners can invest in development with XenServer confidence in the Citrix commitment to openness
Citrix also introduced a new community portal XenServer.org where customers and developers can learn about the changing platforms and planned development. Active forums and Q & A board frequented by our product managers and engineers, and we actively encourage discussion and collaboration.
XenCenter as an example
A change that I'm particularly pleased that XenCenter is now open source under the BSD license. In the past, we have given some tips on how to build a product like XenCenter in the form of how-guides, forums and development of small code examples in the toolkits and API developers XenServer landing area.
developers are now able to use XenCenter reference architecture best practices to develop similar products faster and for custom platforms or mobile devices. Partners can increase the existing plug-in architecture to allow greater integration with their products. Third parties can long-term plan to develop capabilities for XenServer and XenCenter with confidence that the product is actively maintained and they can take advantage of enhancements as they are made. Best of all, as XenCenter is now open source under BSD permissive license, developers can take our code and use it how they like in their own products while maintaining their own proprietary code or whether they also prefer open source their code to allow their own ecosystem partners, it will be their choice.
We have a very active ecosystem around XenCenter plugins. The scale, choice and range of features available on XenServer helps customers reduce costs, allowing them to choose to spend their money on specific best in class solutions fully supported for their specific needs.
The XenCenter code is available with the other components of XenServer on github; take a look and download it here.
The Future
With our open source code and open our strategy development, we look forward to new products to our existing partners and new partners that connect them.
