With many users coming to realize that they need to take their online security seriously, the question "Qu'est- is a VPN "is a question we often hear here. Not only people ask what a VPN is, but they also pose many other questions on the VPN.
Here in BVP we do everything we can to help people understand that VPNs are for, and their many uses. I'll try to answer a lot of common issues, most are more complex than "what is a VPN," so that you know why you need them. Begin to answer some common questions!
What is a VPN?
To break Acronym:
- V irtual
- P PRIVATE
- N etwork
The name describes what it is good enough in this case. A VPN is a private network of servers, real physical that connect to the public Internet. When the "virtual" is just that it is not a true private network with its own cables. It uses the existing structures of the Internet and "virtually" makes private.
When you connect to a VPN that you connect to these servers, which is a real and physical device through the public Internet. Answer the question where the "virtual" aspect comes.
Why secure virtual private networks?
VPNs owe their safety to two of their best features:
- using the remote server IP addresses to hide your own
- strong encryption that hides your data. inside the VPN tunnel.
you can read this article on hiding your IP address if you are still not sure about this. Encrypting your data is easy to explain.
Think of your VPN by creating a tunnel through the Internet that starts directly to your computer, the remote server to which you are connected and finally on the site you visit. This tunnel is created with encryption and your data flows through it. This is where the "virtual" aspect of the network comes in. It does not create a tunnel itself, it is a virtual construction consisting of encryption protocols.
Anyone tapping into this tunnel will be unable to steal your data - it will be a hodgepodge of indecipherable codes. That's where the "private" aspect comes!
Which VPN protocols are the safest?
Now that is a VPN using as well as the protocols are going to create this secure tunnel? Although it varies from VPN provider to another, there is only so much in use today. The most common, and a brief summary of each, are:
- PPTP Court to Point to Point Tunneling Protocol . This is both the easiest to implement, and faster to use. It may, however, be easily broken that encryption is not strong
- L2TP / IPSec :. Ideal for mobile devices, and able to cover some of the weaknesses of PPTP. It can be slow and lag
- SSTP :. A secure VPN protocol used by very many companies, hospitals and other government agencies with strong encryption needs. If you need a high level of encryption sure to verify that your VPN provider offers SSTP
- OpenVPN :. Frequently referred to as the strongest of all VPN encryption protocols. This open source software is a little difficult to implement for the average user, but a good VPN provider will simply include it as part of their client.
See this article on VPN encryption protocols if you want to know more about what is good for you. Honestly, PPTP is really useful for protection if this is what you are after.

What other uses are there for a VPN?
Have you ever gone on vacation from the United States to land overseas? A really strange place, like, say England. Now, have you tried to log in to your Netflix account to access your full range of content - you pay for - for these exotic vacations
You do not have access complete your content, you did?
This is because of a thing called geoblocks. It keeps people in foreign countries to access certain content by reading their IP address and giving them a large virtual "NOPE!"
VPNs allow you to move geoblocks allowing you to connect to servers in other countries. Remember above when I said that the servers connect to are not virtual, they are real physical devices? Well, they are placed in countries around the world so you can access a server in the United States from England and watching this awesome episode of Daredevil (which is each episode) you intended to see.

How do I get my TV or PS4 / Xbox to work in my VPN?
This is where you're going to take your VPN on your computer and turn your router into an encrypted VPN router. Here are the basic steps to do:
- Log on to the panel of your router using your system control computer. You will do this through your browser to the address provided by the manufacturer of your router.
- Go to the screen where you can control your Internet and WAN setting. Look for a tab called "network", "Basic" or "Basic Configuration".
- Ask, or use, the configuration details provided by your VPN provider about setting up your router. This will probably include your username, password and all gateway parameter mask or subnet. This step will vary slightly from provider to provider.
- Change the type of connection to the VPN protocol we discussed above. If all you do is streaming TV you can use PPTP. If you play online, you may want a higher level of protection.
- Select DHCP settings provided by your VPN.
- Save your new settings.
now not only your TV, PS4 / Xbox happen through your VPN, so will any other single thing you connect. You will be able to unlock the geoblocked content, as we just discussed the issue above, securing your iPad and other tablets while doing something online, surf the Internet from an encrypted connection to your TV, and protect your play against DDoS attacks. game happy!
