Not too long ago, Microsoft released the latest version of its productivity suite, Office 2016. I remember (with a wet eye) my days on the Microsoft support line fielding questions about Word for Windows 2.0. The idea of a "mail merge" still makes my stomach drop (it certainly has the same effect on you, only for other reasons).
The latest version of Office focused on better collaboration, real-time "team working" and the default cloud storage. And it made me think about how enterprise customers will be able to switch to O2016. More importantly, this is a "switch", at all, or a cumulative office sprawl?
As I travel the world to customers and partners through a variety of mobility and workplace address issues, Microsoft Office is usually at the forefront of their minds (as a kind of The Walking Dead , cat memes or bacon). And the common theme is, "Sean, I need simultaneously run multiple versions of Office."
Now there are a number of reasons for this, but let me give you some common examples.
- "I have home-grown macros, the version specific to Office 2010".
- "I have a critical line of business applications that depend on Office 2013.".
- "We have a very sophisticated database application that integrates with Excel 07. "
No matter what your reason and you find yourself in the same boat. And how can you know very well, you can not install more than one version of Microsoft Office on a particular device. This raises the question of how you manage all your office easily and safely?
Of course, we do this for decades with Citrix XenApp were or if Office was 95 WinFrame published. By virtualizing any version of Office on XenApp servers and deliver them to your employees who need access to a variety of versions, these employees can run Excel 07, 2010, 2013 and 2016 side by side on the endpoint of their choice. Well, I would be remiss if I didn 't take a pragmatic approach to the addition of Office 2016 in your application folder. Before using O2016, you must ask yourself a question (in your best Dirty Harry voice), "is this new version of Office Cause Problems with current applications and interoperability?" That is a question that will be answered by AppDNA and hold off the evening news. TIP: Think of the last airlines whose flights were delayed and canceled due to a software update for days
I want to close an insight into the future of Office and XenApp .. We closely to bring the Microsoft team in Redmond even more usability to Skype for business and Outlook.
