There have been a few hectic months, but I managed to find some time to polish H.264 prototype I met earlier this year. It looks better than ever and I think it is now clear to say that Pi is perfectly usable as thin client every day.
... it made me think ...
How much would it cost to build a cheap, efficient, ALL-IN-ONE ultra thin customer? HDX should not require the need for specific hardware to the seller; Citrix has a long history of good performance on a variety of devices, and Pi should be no different.
So I decided to set myself a challenge with a budget of £ 100. The new purchased parts, all prices in GBP inc ,. Tax:
Raspberry Pi ...... £ 28.49
15.6 "LCD TV ... .. £ 54.99
mount Pi ......... £ 5.99 ...
keyboard ......... .. £ 3.98
SD card ............. £ 2.49
£ 1.70 Mouse ...............
power Pi £ 0.99 ............
HDMI cable ..... . .. £ 0.99
total ............... £ 99.62 (* phew *!)
result.
£ 99.62 is about $ 162.70 (at the time of writing). Excluding taxes, the figure is closer to $ 130. Factoring in that the pieces were purchased at retail price, it is quite plausible to suggest that the construction of a thin client all-in-one might be done for about $ 150. Certainly there is no any of the usual associated costs in management and support software, but it is after all your own personal workstation that you proudly built 😉
Question is: does it perform? Well, with the help of my friend / expert Andy video editing, I'll let you be the judge of that ... (click here)
Update 14.12.2013 : I did a little more tweaks to the decoder; Pi can now offer a complete experience HDX 1080p! Make sure you watch the video here:
