Citrix HDX (High Definition Experience) technology to deliver rich applications for Windows users on any device or network connection takes a big leap forward in XenDesktop 7, the release of Avalon Excalibur project. Here are some highlights:
- professional graphics applications can now be delivered with high performance GPU sharing and deep compression based on H.264 to higher rates of over 50% that previously possible framework, providing a smooth experience with excellent efficiency of bandwidth, even with very large 3D models. For less demanding case of 3D use, the new software screening technologies for DirectX and OpenGL provide a cost effective alternative to the GPU hardware. Composition and Bureau Redirection leverages DirectX Windows Device graphics processing capabilities to provide a highly interactive user experience.
- Mobile workers noticed that the video frame rate on 3G connections to 800 Kbps is more than double what it was before. HDX and Windows Media Redirection, previously available for Windows and Linux, is extended to Mac, iOS and Android, improve server scalability by moving the rendering to the user's device [Note: These enhancements will be introduced in post-Excalibur releases of Receiver]. In addition, this technology can leverage outboard of the CPU hardware to conserve battery power on mobile devices.
- multicast support has been extended to Windows Media, which greatly reduces the bandwidth required to deliver live video events to branches. And caching the video with CloudBridge has been extended to support the content retrieved by the user's device, even for economies more bandwidth.
- The main improvements in the delivery of XenDesktop UC applications were announced by Microsoft (Lync), Cisco (Jabber) and Avaya (one-X Communicator). And Local Access App provides a new solution for Windows applications that require or benefit from local resources, including Citrix GoToMeeting with HD Faces. (More on Local Access App in a future blog.)
- XenDesktop 7 introduces full support for Windows 8 with a high level of interactivity and graphical quality. Make sure you watch the demo of Windows 8 Synergy Keynote delivery to an iPad!
