XenDesktop 7: Upgrade and migration routes for XenDesktop and XenApp customers -

With the release of XenDesktop 7 just around the corner we are often asked which version of XenDesktop recommend us and how to migrate existing environments in previous versions of XenApp and XenDesktop. I would like to highlight some of the ways you can easily adopt XenDesktop 7 for your deployments in addition to highlighting some of the direction we are heading to further simplify migration in the future.

Moving to XenDesktop 7

If you are a customer of XenDesktop today, there are three ways to go to XenDesktop 7 when available later this month:

1. New installation. If you are a new customer Citrix XenDesktop or XenApp customer if you are eager to deploy XenDesktop 7 App edition as profit from your subscription benefit, a new installation is the recommended method. New facility offers a new approach start deploying XenDesktop 7 in your environment. Guests can also enjoy the simplified procedure to install, easy to configure and the latest features in XenDesktop 7.

  • For XenApp client, you can use StoreFront 2.0 applications and overall jobs between your existing XenApp and XenDesktop your new 7 apps Edition site - providing users with transparent access point to all single applications, whether running on Windows Server 08, Windows Server 08R2 and Windows Server 2012 .
  • for XenDesktop 5.x customers who want to exploit new HDX capabilities in XenDesktop 7 (for example, new HDX functionality or deliver Windows 8 VDI), but do not have time to deploy or 5.x upgrade your delivery controller yet, you can install version 7 VDA Windows 7 or Windows 8, and it will record and work with your administration controller 5.x existing.

2. upgrade in place. XenDesktop supports up 7 upgrade XenDesktop VDA 5 and controller. XenDesktop 5 customers already This approach allows to update seamlessly and quickly to the latest version, without necessarily disrupting or re-planning their XenDesktop deployment. Customers can perform the upgrade on site VDA to bring their image of gold to the latest version. Once updated, users will be able to immediately benefit from the new HDX capabilities in XenDesktop delivered 7. Do note that Citrix does not support upgrading on site Excalibur Tech Preview, or XenDesktop 4.

3. migration tool. For XenDesktop 4 customers XenDesktop 7 provides a migration tool to help you migrate from XenDesktop 4 to XenDesktop 7. The migration tool will export your XenDesktop 4 data in an XML file, which can then be imported into your 7 new XenDesktop site. Due to a number of new enhancements in XenDesktop 7, the migration tool does not migrate administrators, licenses, office group of files or registry keys.

simplified migration by Merlin

Enterprise migration software can be agonizing for IT administrators. This agony can be described in terms of the end user misfortune, cost (CAPEX and OPEX), and the Availability service throughout the migration. Desktop virtualization deployments, most migrations accompany migration windows.

A Synergy Anaheim, presented the new orchestration application layer as part of the next version of Merlin of Avalon. The layer Orchestration App will provide customers the ability to manage XenApp 6.5 and XenDesktop delivery sites 7.x all from a single interface through an orchestration engine to the desired state. This orchestration layer also allows customers to manage deployments spanning multiple sites. Further reduce specific consoles to the site and providing a global view of your Citrix deployment and ensure consistent configuration. You can watch the session in small groups on Merlin here.

When we announced the strategy Avalon one of the most requested features was the ability to support existing deployments with the orchestration application layer. The migration capability allows you to adopt your new app orchestration for delivery sites, and then migrate your existing XenApp and XenDesktop deployments at your own pace. We designed this feature around five basic principles for a successful migration:

  1. Do not change the production environment. Migration activities take place when users access the production environment for their day to day. The elimination of any change in the production environment provides assurance that the users can not be affected during the migration activity.
  2. Making seamless migration for users. When you are ready to migrate users to the new site of delivery, it is important that the migration event is completely transparent to the user. Think of a Web service, as a user, you do not worry about which version of ShareFile you go. All you care about is this set of applications and desktops that you had when you are available offline the next time you need them.
  3. Enable phased migration. Many XenApp and XenDesktop deployments serve hundreds of applications and desktop catalogs to thousands of users across different groups of delivery. When approaching migration you want to migrate the application and the various workstations in steps based on the state of criticality mission. Users are no different; you should be able to migrate different groups of users in stages.
  4. Allow the rollback capacity quickly if problems arise. When migrating applications, desktops and separate groups of users if a problem occurs, you should be able to automatically restore the existing production environment without having to manually reconfigure the paths of access or restore rights.
  5. provide feedback on migratory status. Because you approach the stepwise migration and continuing to use your existing production environment alongside the new deployment's important to have a view of the table clear edge to what has already been migrated and status . If changes are made to production deployment allowing you to re-offer or migration of the user groups to the new site.

In the Merlin release, we respect these principles through the new integrated migration feature in the powerful orchestration application layer. This will allow you to migrate at your own pace by decoupling the user groups, desktop applications and catalogs, and the rights of the existing environment through a guided experience. Provide a reproducible approach that aligns the automated way customers approach the migration today without requiring facts scripts house or manual tasks.

But if you have applications or desktops on XenApp or XenDesktop that you do not want to migrate but just under aggregate StoreFront. App orchestration simplifies this process by taking the manual task of updating the aggregation rules that would otherwise be repeated with each cluster and automating StoreFront. Because the application orchestration has the affinity of the user, lease and location policy, it can help to automatically update the aggregation rules within your multi-site deployment.

Summary

Migration to the best class desktop virtualization product has never been easier. Customers looking to upgrade to XenDesktop 7 have multiple options depending on your use case and the existing environment. Then with the release Merlin we will take the next step in the simplified migration guided through the application orchestration. Look out for more posts in the future that will go into more details on migration.
