The second part of our series in 6 games on the benefits of Citrix XenClient - local VM option XenDesktop and FlexCast delivery technology - we explained how XenClient can be used to better manage PCs by converting them into virtual appliances . XenClient is a client virtualization solution ready production with thousands of workstations in deployment today. Our next installment in the series covers use XenClient to repurpose PCs as thin clients.
According CIO Survey 2012 by Gartner, the highest IT priorities for CIOs will reduce the cost of IT while at the same time as the development and management flexible infrastructure. Organizations can use desktop virtualization to allow passage of device management to deliver services to users, which is critical for IT in support branch and distributed offices.
local virtual desktops to remote sites
Although XenDesktop and networking products such as Citrix NetScaler Branch Repeater reduce investment and operating costs and simplify IT branch, Citrix provides another option to minimize traffic WAN and data center costs: local virtual desktops powered by XenClient
[XenClient is a virtualization solution loan customer production with thousands of workstations in deployment today. XenClient is a part of XenDesktop and FlexCast delivery technology and is included at no additional charge when you buy the XenDesktop Enterprise or Platinum Edition licenses. local virtual desktops are ideal for branch offices and employees located around the world as they can safely operate off-grid and still leverage the centralized management and synchronization.
secure central management of the local virtual desktop
local virtual desktops are enabled using XenClient Engine, a type of hypervisor client 1, and managed centrally XenClient Synchronizer.
Taking advantage of the ability of Synchronizer remote desktop server XenClient can manage all remote servers from a central server. You can win many key benefits by using remote servers such as intelligent caching of downloaded images; efficient use of bandwidth between remote offices; local storage and maintenance of backups; and rapid recovery for remote clients. The remote server can be used in LAN or WAN configurations.
downloads from the central server is encrypted and compressed. As a user requests an updated image - or XenClient update engine - they ask from the remote server to which they are registered, the remote server then checks with the central server to start the download of the update . Once the update is downloaded to the remote server, then starts for the next user.
network factors
The network topology has a strong impact on the design of the facility Synchronizer. The following are the most important factors to consider:
- Low speed (WAN) connections to remote sites . The XenClient system will perform at its best if Synchronizer remote servers are installed at the end of low speed links. In this way, the virtual machines are only downloaded once, no matter how many customers there at the remote site and no backups will be sent via the WAN connection. This results in a very low utilization of the WAN link. If it is impossible to install XenClient Synchronizer remote server at each remote location, it is always beneficial to install a remote server to serve a number of sites, as this will reduce the load on the connection outbound WAN to the central data center.
- Several high speed segments . If the network has several high speed separate LAN segments, then it makes sense to install a Synchronizer remote server on each segment to maximize the number of customers that can be served simultaneously and to minimize the impact on the core network. For example, if a 10Gb backbone in the central data center and a series of 1Gb LAN segments distributed throughout the organization with small data centers each segment connected to the spine, a good strategy implementation would be to install remote servers in each center all satellite data connected to the backbone 10Gb and the central server in the primary data center. This will result in data being distributed to remote servers very quickly and from there delivered in parallel to all clients on different networks slower speed.
Virtual offices are a key tool to simplify PC remotely deployed infrastructure to streamline the rapid expansion, support offices and to attract and retain the best talent wherever they are . By deploying a combination of server hosted virtual desktops with Citrix XenDesktop and local virtual desktops powered by Citrix XenClient, IT can respond quickly to change, reduce IT budgets and improve user satisfaction.
