From Citrix XenDesktop 7.0 was Microsoft App-V 5.0 as the solution default for application streaming.
This guide introduces Microsoft App-V 5.0 with streaming Citix existing customers. Familiarity with Citrix Application Streaming (CAS) and relevant terminology is assumed. This document addresses the administrative components. The user experience is not covered.
This document applies to App-V 5.0 RTM, App-V 5.0 SP1 and App-V 5.0 SP2 at the time of writing. App-V now refers to App-V 5.0 (RTM, SP1 or SP2).
The text points to the links that will help you in configuring the App-V components.
Detailed information on integration, App-V 5.0 is included in the reference section.
1. Components
CAS had two compulsory and one optional components for deploying CAS applications. Streaming Profiler was used to capture changes when installing a "CAS profile." When Streaming Client will be indicated in these changes, extract them and use them to launch the application using the details of the environment specified by the CAS profile. If the CAS applications must be delivered through Citrix Receiver and CAS applications must be deployed on XenApp.
App-V 5.0 has components similar to that of the CAS.
1.1 App-V 5.0 Sequencer = Citrix Streaming Profiler
Using the Citrix Streaming Profiler, an administrator runs the Application Installer to create the Citrix streaming profile for this application .
App-V is equivalent component App-V Sequencer . Using App-V Sequencer is detailed here
1.2 App-V 5.0 client = Citrix Application streaming customer
When pointed CAS valid profile on the network Share, Citrix client streaming app used to "flow" needed files to the machine and used to run the applications in the CAS profile. App-V 5.0 has equivalent component called App-V 5.0 Client. Details deployment and use are mentioned here
1.3 App-V Management Server App-V + = Publishing Server Citrix XenApp
Citrix XenApp is used to deliver applications via Citrix Receiver CAS . XenApp is used to set the icon, the file type associations and Users for a CAS application. When a Citrix Receiver user points to the XenApp server, the user receives this request.
The role of metadata management is played by App-V Management Server and Publishing Server. Administrator configures users, file type associations, etc. in the App-V Management Server 5.0.
App -V Publishing Server is the App-V client interface used to access the data app. App-V Publishing Server URL is provided in the App-V Client configuration.
2. CAS & Deployment App-V 5.0 Deployment
3. connect groups in App-V = Inter isolation Communication in CAS
CAS applications executed in well-isolated bubbles called sandboxes. running application in a sandbox could not see or running access application in another sandbox.
CAS allowed users to connect several different profiles together. Applications in these related profiles could access the other. This was called as the Inter isolation communication (IIC).
Concept similar App-V is known as connection groups. Connection groups operate similar to IIC in the CAS. Two packages connected by connecting group can see and use the services of the other.
More details on the App-V connection groups are mentioned here and here
Connection unit must be used whenever the client used IIC earlier. For example. . Office + Adobe

4. Why app-V 5.0 on Citrix Application Streaming?
- The sequencing of App-V is easier than CAS Profiling
- App-V 5.0 offers improved programmability via PowerShell cmdlets.
- App-V 5.0 allows you to connect App-V 5.0 packages on the fly using the management server. CAS users need to create a separate profile for IIC.
- App-V 5.0 Sequencer client does not separately install Microsoft Visual Studio Transmitted. They are realized as part of the package.
- App-V CALs are included in the RDS CALs for Windows Server 08 and later.
