A new law signed Monday, May 6, 2014 takes the role of government and censorship of the Internet in Russia to a new level. Of course, Russia is not the first or the last country to ban certain websites or Internet together, but the new law is a stark reminder of the power of governments can exercise if they wish.
The new Russian law, which goes into effect on August 1, is specifically intended to silence the opposition websites and user data collection. Specifically, the law requires that blogs with 3000 or more unique visitors per day must register as mass media, forcing them to meet the same standards as other mass media. They will be "required to certify the factual accuracy of the information in their blogs" or suffer the consequences.
The Chinese government also has a wild story with the ban on websites, including sites Popular social networking Twitter and Facebook. the 09 block is entered into force after a peaceful demonstration turned violent in Xinjiang. While China then arrested censorship in an area of 17 square mile in mainland China, the area free trade Shanghai, Twitter and Facebook are still largely blocked nationwide from March 2014
Some government bans are surprising
It may come as a surprise that even the Australia has banned many websites. in 09, WikiLeaks published a list of the Australian government websites were blacklisted. Although the request was made that all the sites on the list were related to child pornography and therefore taken down, it was discovered that the blacklist included many other sites as well including Wikipedia entries, YouTube links and even the site of a dentist Queensland.
the two countries where almost no citizens are allowed to access the Internet include North Korea and Burma. This may not come as a surprise, it is important to realize that first, second and third world governments have all the power to control and extinguish the access to information and communication. And it's easier than we might realize.
