XenDesktop 7.1 Planning on Hyper-V 2012 R2 Pt.1 -

A subject that has generated much interest in the Citrix community planning and design of a solution XenDesktop 7.1 on Microsoft Hyper-V 2012 R2. Citrix Consulting has published a new update of the Citrix Virtual Desktop Manual, which includes the design decisions when deploying XenDesktop 7.1 on Hyper-V 2012 R2 and System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2. In anticipation of the new version, I will publish a series of Hyper-V 2012 R2 blogs, each of which will focus on another subject addressed in the manual. This week I'll take a look at some of the new Hyper-V 2012 R2 features networking that you should consider when designing a XenDesktop.

Some notable changes in networking in Windows Server 2012 R2 that will have a direct impact on the design of XenDesktop 7.1 on Hyper-V 2012 R2.

  • NIC teaming. NIC teaming in Hyper-V 08 R2 are not natively supported in the operating system, and requires third-party software management NIC. That changed in Windows Server 2012/2012 R2. With the integrated native support in the operating system, NIC teaming is easier to install and apply to Hyper-V servers. I recommend the NIC teaming configuration on all Hyper-V hosts used in XenDesktop solutions, especially hosts that are clustered. It is possible to create virtual NIC teams in VM as well, but this adds complexity to the solution. For most XenDesktop deployments team creating the physical layer will be sufficient.

  • virtual NIC in the parent partition. in Hyper-V 08 R2 you are limited to a virtual network adapter in the parent partition. In Hyper-V 2012 R2, you can create multiple virtual cards in the parent partition. This is very useful when you have a limited number of physical network adapters available for example- blade servers. With XenDesktop on Hyper-V, there are usually five networks to consider: management, cluster, live migration, the network and storage VM. Hyper-V 08 R2 requires physical NICs to isolate each of these networks. Hyper-V 2012 R2, you can get a pair of physical NICs teamed and four virtual NICs in the parent partition. For example, consider a blade server with two physical NICs 10Gbps. Create the NIC team and enable the Hyper-V role. The Hyper-V virtual switch is associated with the NIC team. Virtual NICs can be created (using PowerShell commands) for the management, cluster, live migration and storage (if you use iSCSI) networks in the parent partition. Then I recommend configuring VLANs on virtual NIC connections to isolate the different traffic (using PowerShell as well). For more information about PowerShell commands, please see the Microsoft TechNet article - What's New in Hyper-V Virtual Switch. Once the virtual NICs are created, the Hyper-V host will look like the image below with all virtual cards routing through the Hyper-V virtual switch.
  • SR-IOV. 2012/2012 R2 Hyper-V supports Single Root I / O Virtualization (SR-IOV) capable network adapters. This allows virtual machines to directly access the physical network adapter, which improves I / O performance when SR-IOV is enabled, however, the traffic bypasses the Hyper-V virtual switch and can not take advantage redundancy provided by the associated NIC team to Hyper-V virtual switch. Teaming SR-IOV enabled NICs is not supported, so for SR-IOV in XenDesktop is recommended only on dedicated networks live migration. You gain performance but lose redundancy so use with caution

Some XenDesktop key network design decisions :.

  • What kind of physical network adapters to use [1945006?] to improve Hyper-V 2012 R2 performance consider using physical NICs with the following properties:
    • 1Gbps or more (10Gbps is preferred for larger deployments)
    • Unload hardware support - Reduces the use of IOs network processor. Hyper-V supports largesend Offload and TCP checksum offloading
    • Receive Side Scaling (RSS) support - .. Improve the performance of Hyper-V hosts multiprocessor allowing network receive the treatment that will be distributed in the CPU
    • Dynamic Virtual Machine queue (dVMQ) Support - This also improves the performance of Hyper-V hosts multiprocessor distributing traffic management for specific VM queues across CPUs
    [
  • How many physical networks to plan? For most deployments, there will be four networks: management, cluster, live migration and VM network (assuming storage traffic uses an HBA connection). Using Hyper-V hosts with a pair of 10Gbps network adapters teamed should be enough.
  • What type of virtual network adapters to use? Hyper-V 2012 R2 supports three types of virtual cards:
    • Standard. fast performance synthetic virtual card that is used by default when creating Hyper-V virtual machines. This adapter must be selected when creating virtual machines using machines Creation Services.
    • Legacy. multiport emulated December 21140 10/100 Mbps adapter. It does not work as well as the standard adapter, but it is necessary when creating virtual machines using Provisioning services as it uses for PXE boot desktops. A new feature added to Provisioning Services 7 is the ability for virtual machines to move above the map inherited from the standard adapter after booting VM. For the move to produce the standard adapter must be on the same subnet as the legacy adapter. The problem with this configuration is that it requires your virtual machines to have two network cards, and double the number of DHCP leased the necessary IP addresses. To keep the design and management simpler, I recommend using only the legacy NIC when using Provisioning Services. Note: Hyper-V 2012 R2 supports the generation 2 virtual machines can PXE boot using the standard adapter, however XenDesktop 7 does not support the Hyper-V VM Generation 2 [
    • Fibre Channel. special adapter when use for virtual machines requiring direct access to virtual SANs. This virtual network adapter is not supported on virtual machines running the Windows desktop operating system. It will be a rare circumstance to never use with XenDesktop 7 deployments.
  • Should I use separate VLANs for virtual desktops? For security reasons keeping virtual desktops separate the infrastructure network is seen as a good practice.
  • What type of virtual networks to configure? 2012/2012 R2 Hyper-V allows you to create networks that are external, internal or private. External allows VMs to communicate with anything on the physical network, and is the only type of virtual network necessary for most XenDesktop deployments. Internal allows virtual machines on the same host to communicate with each and Hyper-V host. Private allows virtual machines on the same host only communicate. Both internal and private networks will not be practical for most XenDesktop deployments.

The next week we'll take a look at some new storage features in Hyper-V 2012 R2 and considerations of storage design for XenDesktop 7.1.

Importing managed applications - SCCM and Active Directory

Importing managed applications - SCCM and Active Directory -

Managed applications can be collected using built-in integration to connect to System Center Configuration Database Manager or based deployments policy via Active Directory. AppDNA connects to the Active Directory database and SCCM online or offline using the client. offline client is most useful in cases where access to the target environment is limited for some reason, in general network setting limitations or user privileges.

Offline Client is single executable glazing and can be downloaded from the server AppDNA and given to someone with the necessary access to target servers. Client is running on a domain controller or a server SCCM scope. Customer then collects the required information and creates an archive, which in turn can be delivered to the AppDNA administrator to import the data to the database. The collected data includes information on application deployments, ie. SCCM collections, programs and advertisements, or their relatives coming from SCCM 2012. In addition to the various deployment configurations, SCCM 2012 provides some additional features of AppDNA perspective, ie. Incremental imports is particularly useful for managing application changes over given time.

Usually SCCM distributions are related to the machine accounts, user accounts or groups of users in Active Directory, which is essential for the management of applications within the organization. Active Directory based distributions are treated similarly by default.

These distributions may be implementing mandatory advertisements or installations, which means it is not necessarily in connection with the use of effective enforcement. As mentioned above, the rationalization of the portfolio and the development of cost optimization of view license, it would be essential to know if the applications are actually used or not. This means that using a distribution system does not make the information not relevant use rather the combination of these two systems gives the optimum starting point for the project.

Although SCCM has characteristics able to use applications, it is not used by the current version of AppDNA (6.3), which is a good reason to use SysTrack in all cases.

to import applications SCCM, there are two options.

  • Use "direct import" if distributions are standard MSI files. In this case, the location of each MSI is provided by configuring SCCM programs and applications can be directly imported without capture by selecting "Use direct import MSI".
  • capture applications using SCCM advertisements. This is particularly useful if the applications are not standardized MSI files (scripted installations, executables, etc ...). In this case, applications are captured using "Install Capture" feature.

After the list of supported applications is filtered and streamlined, the selected applications can be moved to more familiar "Import Applications" screen by selecting "Add to import list."

Note that direct import is not always recommended, although this may be possible. For example chained installations would be difficult to manage if the relationship is broken by importing them individually. Depending on the scenario, it should be considered if the capture of the full chain or consolidation of the MSI file is the best option for the next actions, either. Sequencing App-V.

Capture applications will be covered separately as it is about broad and can include complex technical considerations.

Active Directory data is equally important that we need to match the managed applications with users, user groups or organizational units. If your client is facing security, they would ask what kind of information we export actually from their database? Usernames, yes. Passwords, no.

As I mentioned earlier, it is all about users making them vital Active Directory information for the later stages of the project. We will use this information as a connection point to XenDesktop project, but it is also necessary for assembly applications in the organizational structure, planning the deployment of the implementation, forecasting progress, status reports, application prioritization and portfolio rationalization. I could go on forever ...

illustration below shows how the above mentioned systems functions as a basis for the management of well-structured applications.

A common question we had with each version of eDocs is how to link the content to specific tasks to our readers want to be. competing demands and interests have made this difficult at times and it's just as frustrating for our editorial team for our readers. The authors want the content to be useful and to help readers do their jobs. And we know that our readers are busy and need to do things quickly.

In XenDesktop 7, we took a new approach that we hope you find useful. We have created a page titled "How Do I?" The intention is that if you can not easily attach the task you are looking for a subject eDocs or research, you can find it in this list.

How Do I page from eDocs

We can also turn this list into a FAQ. Some began referring to already in this way. The important thing is that it is useful and provides a way for our readers to find information quickly.

Have you used the How Do I? page? Did it help? Were you disappointed not to find something there?

If you want something to add to the list, please use the button Give Us Feedback in the bottom right corner of the eDocs page to apply.

Awesome view of the Westin New Orleans and large sessions with Americas SE and counseling Citrix SERVTECH Congress. As for the sessions to SERVTECH Madrid for the Europe region, revenue teams connect with SEs in the Americas region in one place to provide the update product and are workshops that would expand the PE and teams consulting on their product knowledge and other skills to more advanced Citrix are awesome people.

It's great to meet new people and people who have been in the Citrix community long to flesh out ideas and different perspectives of their regions and their clients.

Some sessions that really hit the mark are as follows :.

- Insight for HDX environments / XenDesktop XenApp definitely commanded attention with standing room only with the necessary visibility in environments / XA XD

- XenMobile with NetScaler update of the solution also has the buzz and the value of the date that session. That the public was for XenApp / XenDesktop or public consultation or networking with people, all sessions for XenMobile were Hoppin '

-. Software-defined networking - SDN top sessions because it is sexy and recently applied for public networking. This helped capped with NetScaler SDX update session on the last that we have and how we can further advance our technologies

-. Ditto for security and authentication sessions that really gave an overview of some clients use cases and highlight NerScaler security capabilities.

As our public events for the next Summit and Synergy, it would be good to hear your comments on topics you want to hear. Feel free to provide feedback below.

A cloud síť - základ výpočetního centra budoucnosti -

Jeste pár před lety, když někdo použil pojem cloud na veřejnosti if mnoho Lidi myslelo, že jedna is jen o další populární výraz ze světa HE. Mezitím be ale z tohoto populárního slova a vize stal prvořadý koncept, který dnes patří mezi základní pilíře moderní IT INFRASTRUKTURY

cloud má velký Vliv na to, jak dnes pracujeme co všechno můžeme velmi snadno používat -. Počítače, Smartphony a Tablety. IT oddělení zažívají v této souvislosti významnou a změnu zásadní. Z cloud computingu vychází klíčová součást podnikového IT, stejně novodobé výpočetní jako centrum. Nároky jsou úplné jiné, než byly například ještě rok dva zpátky. Statické of prostředí, ve kterém každý fyzický stroj splňuje Konkrétne určený Ucel kvůli bezpečnostním důvodům, připojení Siti k jen PReS LAN Kabel - to všechno už I minulosti

Výpočetní centrum is mezitím stalo prostředkem, který umožňuje výpočetní výkony ..

Kooperace a partnerství poskytovatelů IT INFRASTRUKTURY Hrají temer stejně důležitou roli jako samotné produkty. Aby bylo výpočetní centrum v cloudu výkonné, nesmí být podceněna architektura takového centra. For souvisí is skutečnosti, ze k by Sobe jednotlivé komponenty Mely pasovat co nejlépe.

Společnost Citrix například velmi úzce spolupracuje is společnosti Cisco, aby zvládla nadále vyvíjet strategicky významné oblasti cloud networkingu, orchestrace v cloudu a zrychlovala možnosti pro rozvoj podnikovou mobilitu a firmam i poskytovatelům služeb usnadňovala cestu do Mobilní Éry cloudu.

Vzajemna spolupráce I oboustranně velmi důležitá. společnosti OBE, Cisco Citrix if Stoji za kvalitou, inovativními řešeními a spolehlivými produkty.

VMware EUC-Sponsored Report Gets XenApp scalability and erroneous cost - Part 1 -

with VMware EUC Principled Technologies recently released what is clearly a biased and inaccurate report comparing the cost and scalability of XenApp Horizon 5.2.

Because some people can read this report and not understand it contains inaccuracies and prejudices behind it, I think the answer is required. The community deserves to hear the truth.

It is also important to understand that this blog is not directed to VMware as a company, rather I wrote this as a response to ensure that you, perhaps a Citrix and / or VMware customer how VMware EUC sponsored reports spread misunderstanding and mislead the community. I consider VMware high technology company, and I have great respect for most of the technical and commercial people to EUC (@ Andreleibovici, @DStafford to name a couple).

This less-than-precise sponsored report also compares non-persistent VDI with RDSH. Here is my blog myth-busting some of these claims. In this post, I want to break down and analyze some of VMware sponsored report claims specifically around scalability XenApp 5.2 vs Horizon

Scalability claim :.

for the purposes of this blog, I will assume that the number of scalability in the report is accurate for Horizon. However, I do take umbrage figures submitted for XenApp and I would start by looking at the claim that XenApp 6.5 can scale to 151 users to lossy compression and 145 users with lossless compression vs 174 users with VMware VDI carries on hardware identical. The test was conducted using the material G8 HP with 256 GB RAM and Dell EqualLogic PS-6110X using RAID 10

The XenApp numbers represented in the report are significantly lower than Frank Anderson digits (Citrix architect solution) tested in the Citrix laboratory on a very similar hardware using local storage (not SAN) some time ago. Frank numbers indicate that you can get 203 users sessions with a medium workload Login VSI on Hyper-V2. Does VMware vSphere hinting that has scalability issues for these poor results? Or are they simply distort the results by using the poor voluntarily testing methodology? Note that Frank used a similar configuration VM (4vCPU and 16 GB of RAM), identical processors (Intel Xeon E5-2680 processor and 128 GB of RAM used, 50% less memory than it reports the configuration). The configuration of storage it uses featured HP Smart Array Controller PCIe 3.0 SAS 6 Gb s / eight and 10000 RPM SAS disks set up in RAID 0 + 1 volumes, but the scalability is limited by the processor not storage .

now, you should not take the floor on Citrix scalability tests, HP released an unsubsidized architecture and objective XenDesktop reference by HP (see page 23) on a similar material demonstrating that they can get the light workload 284 Login VSI XenApp users.

This is another point of evidence and another lab report by Citrix Solutions Lab on how to design a XenApp solution for mobilizing applications for 500 users. You can get around ~ 205 users using HP hardware G8 and Intel Xeon E5-2670 CPU, local SSDs and 50% less memory than paper claims to VMware. Again, the only difference is that these figures are on Hyper-V2 (which by the way is clear).

In fact, some customers may want to install XenApp on the bare metal, which again tested and proven Frank can get ~ 245 users on similar hardware.

The point I am making is that single server scalability on the same hardware for XenApp / RDS will exceed both XenDesktop VDI and VMware View VDI . You can take a look at other alliance partners architectures such as Dell DVS reference architecture for XenDesktop and IBM smart desktop cloud infrastructure for XenDesktop

There is no way the numbers for the load average job would be to 151 users with a lower density of VMware VDI, so it is a shame that there are still so many points of existing XenApp data such misleading document sponsored by VMware. There are several other misleading elements clearly in this report:

- When taking the equipment on the account, the VMware sponsored report easily skips about IOPS and expensive storage requirement for VDI users (disk array Dell Equal Logic PS6110X) to support 175 users. XenApp 6.5 can produce a large number of scale, even without a SAN or NAS

-. 145 users for XenApp is the max Login VSI in the report, but the entire report focuses on that number. VMware can you publish VSIMax for testing

- At 51 minutes of the CPU test View increases to 100% and flat lines. This does not occur with the XenApp test meaning user sessions would be much more sensitive to XenApp

- Check the user response time. For XenApp, all response times are below the 4000ms brand, whereas this is not true with View

-. There is no mention of the total RAM consumed by XenApp. Our experience and independent reports show that it would be expected to be 50% of what a session consume VDI

- VMware partner jumped report the total amount of storage required for VDI. The basic rule is that each linked clone takes about 15% of the size of the golden image. Assuming a 40GB or image, the clone storage calculation linked to 174 workstations pooled would be about ~ 1 Terra Byte

If you are really interested in learning about scalability XenApp then I recommend you read the following article CTXS

Bottom line: RDS VDI scalability and numbers are close, but there are still at least 15 to 20% gap where RDS offers the highest user density without special storage or IOPS requirement and 50% less RAM

in part 2 of my blog, I will talk about the comparison of XenApp costs to cost VDI VMware Horizon.

Welcome to DarkSide: Announcing My new post -

I heard it again today. It's just my first month at Citrix, but I have heard time and time again since I left my job as an analyst at Gartner, but never other analysts. Today he was a journalist friend of mine. "In my business, we call it the darkside," he said. I get it, I changed my work as an analyst objective to someone who has taken a side. Then he be it. I'm proud to announce that I have joined Citrix as VP of Mobile Solutions and Strategy.

and a change it is. I did spend thirteen Gartner build world of enterprise mobility. and I saw a lot of things come and go and a big change. But I think we are only at the dawn of this growing enterprise mobility. personal use opened the track and our lives will never be the same. Who can imagine a time without a smartphone in our pocket? the enterprise mobility is much more complicated. But I think the time has come. I am very happy to look under the different angle-warts and all. I'm happy to be in a company that rents innovation, takes chances and sometimes fails, but often succeeds. It's good to be on the front lines of technology and certainly of interest and adoption of mobility will continue to increase. it will maybe take a little magic "dark" (I confuse Harry Potter and Star Wars now? to finally get the enterprise mobility to succeed really), but I really think we need a company that can identify needs largely in the company's technologies. There are not that mobile devices-it is the backend infrastructure, application development, technology networks-all of these combine to make the business a success of mobility. I am happy to be whichever way I am. I know I made the right choice.

In the coming months, I'll take a look at what is happening in Citrix with mobility, our customers, our success and maybe even some failures. It's part of life. I will mostly concentrate on what is happening with mobile technologies, industry news and my only about how the enterprise mobility grows. Ten cases of use for remote access of PC in XenDesktop

Ten cases of use for remote access of PC in XenDesktop -

"We review all our value propositions through the lens of mobile telephony" #CitrixIA.

I was watching the twitter feed of industry analysts they heard yesterday Citrix leadership present throughout the day (September 18 e 2013), and in particular, this quote widespread that filtered Mark Templeton really stands out for me. I 100% agree and simply, he conveyed the very purpose of the remote PC access as it applies to existing workstations.

Recently, I created one day frustrated in the life of remote desktop access the action live video that showcases remote PC access users solve challenges associated with BYO, VPN, and the circumstances of work / life, using XenDesktop through this movable lens.

remote PC Access can be considered as a rancher for remote desktop mobility in some ways we're going to discuss the top 10 customers reasons are embracing

  1. You are a "admin Citrix" and publish an application from MetaFrame / Presentation Server / XenApp, which allows a user to type in their IP Address office or name of the machine, the user carefully reauthenticates. This connection is then uses the server / XA MF / PS as a proxy server protocol transition.
  2. You are a "network admin services" and create VPN tunnels (without client or not) to enable remote desktop applications to browse the secure connection in the DMZ. After authentication for VPN, users can create their own links to internal machines, and you must implement Network Access Controls to ensure they connect to a PC and policies to ensure different virtual channels are limited - most likely duplicate checks from your existing Citrix deployment application. You should also make sure the pre-authentication analyzes are valid, and in some cases require certain levels of operating system patches to maintain a perimeter virus security and malware.
  3. You are intrigued by VDI, or HVD in the data center, but a short time to go before the user community has been the transition. Deploy remote access of PC now, and their connection experience never changes once the image has been migrated to the data center.
  4. You do not rely on migration to VDI datacenter or HVD, and have plans to PC refresh. Your connection model for remote access to the PC still has VPN support challenges and to ensure the best experience alongside your Citrix application infrastructure. http://www.citrix.com/tv/#videos/06
  5. You have invested in XenApp and want to unify the physical remote workstations with the same user experience, more use controls and monitoring HDX your existing infrastructure; SmartAccess HDX EdgeSight and Insight.
  6. You have XenDesktop and looking for new and exciting ways to leverage your FlexCast licenses more widely and reduce costs across the IT department by the collapse of desktop access infrastructure.
  7. You're looking to reduce network bandwidth and increase the user experience to access Remote Desktop App allowing local access and operation to limit the Web content and applications commercial home PC, while the enterprise Web content and application are stored in the remote session - all painted in the same session of virtual desktop visually. http://www.citrix.com/tv/#videos/8987
  8. You have plans to refresh PC but want an image delivery model provided by XenClient revolutionized. Integration of remote access PC in the basic central image gives you an advantage to have a superior experience remote desktop while physically away from the locally virtualized image, which increases the return on investment of these assets. http://www.citrix.com/tv/#videos/605 (EDIT: In Q4 2015, XenClient was announced as end of life, for more details, visit our product life cycle support page)
  9. You are intrigued by XenMobile and also want to incorporate physical remote desktop access alongside your SaaS and remote applications, providing the same user experience remoting and security infrastructure network without the overhead extra DMZ and management / load 3 e protocol add-ins section.
  10. You have a security policy that restricts BYO in the sense that the VPN must be established because of viruses, malware and IP theft prevention. Using the receiver, Netscaler gateway and policy HDX you overcome these threats retaining the intellectual property to the desktop and never support a VPN for viruses / malware potentially spread

Give XenDesktop trial July 1 .: http://www.citrix.com/products/xendesktop/try.html today - and in 30 minutes you should have PC remote access and running. We have two great videos by Allen Furmanski in our technical WW preparation teams if you need advice on installing the broker or agent.

How to install and configure XenDesktop with PVS 7 PVD 7

How to install and configure XenDesktop with PVS 7 PVD 7 -

I recently had a case where the client could not get to work with PVD PVS in XenDesktop 7. After reviewed the literature on edocs I realized that there was no one stop guide on how to get that job from start to finish. So to save others from having to 'breadcrumb' through the documentation I thought I would write this blog

first start by configuring the vdisk -. There are a few ways to do it, it does not matter you choose (see article here) I selected the first

Provisioning Services, then capture the image, then XenDesktop

1. Install and configure the operating system on a virtual machine
2 .. Install the target device software on the VM Provisioning services.
3.Run imaging services Provisioning Wizard to configure the vDisk.
4.Reboot. second stage
Provisioning services 5.The image Wizard runs to capture the personal vDisk image.
6.From console, set the target device to boot from the vDisk.
7.Configure the virtual machine to boot from the network, then reboot.
8.Install XenDesktop software on the VM and configure with advanced options for personal vDisk.
9.Manually perform inventory and shut the virtual machine down.
10.In the console, place the vDisk in Standard Image mode. The image is ready for deployment.

The next step is to run the wizard in XenDesktop 7 PVS console, this is documented here. Basically what this does is create new VM based on a template, import them into PVS and create the catalog in XenDesktop.

1. Click your site in the PVS console and select "XenDesktop Setup Wizard."

2. Then click on the welcome message.

3. Enter your address XenDesktop Controller when prompted

4. Select your host resources.

5. Enter your user credentials in the hypervisor when prompted.

6. Choose the model of the machine to use for creating your target VM

7. Choose the vDisk created earlier

8. Choose to create a new catalog of the machine or use an existing one.

9. Choose OS desktop

10. Choose to save the changes and store them on a separate personal vDisk

11. Next Choose the number or VM to create, vCPUs and memory allocated to each size and Personal vDisk drive letter and the start method.

12. Choose to create new AD computer accounts, or import existing. (I chose to create new)

13. Create new accounts

14. Click Finish to create the VM and create the catalog

15. once completed, you should now have the new catalog of the machine!

Crystal Palace

There was a little buzz around a new project we are working on here Citrix Crystal Palace codename. I thought I should explain what it is all about.

simply, Crystal Palace, it's easy to share information across your devices. Need to get a presentation to a co-presenter? Just open and sharing; they will now. Need to transfer a video you are watching from your desktop to your tablet? Just send. If you have text on your PC that you need on your phone? Simply copy and paste.

Crystal Palace
Watch the video.

Working away from the traditional office is becoming more common. It can be at home, in the car, or in a public place like a café or airport. At Citrix, we call it these mobile Workstyles. As good as smartphones, tablets and laptops, sometimes they can not just deal with how we want to work. In fact, they can really slow us down. - Portable Agility seems impossible

Get different devices to talk to each other is extremely frustrating, if not impossible. For example, a smartphone is ideal for checking and responding to short emails promptly, but it is ill-suited to deal with attachments, detailed complex. Would not it be nice to open and edit them on a tablet or a laptop, seamlessly from the smartphone? Or maybe there is something on your smartphone that should be copied to your laptop.

Today, that is a lot of work. you must copy and paste into an email, and send email from your smartphone. Then you wait for the mail to arrive, open, copy the contents, and paste it into any application you are working. Ideally, you simply copy from one device and paste it on another. We decided to tackle this problem in order to create mobile workstyles painless moving.

Crystal Palace is an application that allows movement of labor between your devices and simple and immediate contact. With Crystal Palace, you can do these things with much more. Look at the "labor movement" possibilities:

  • Copy and paste text on all your devices
  • Take an attachment from your phone and open it on your tablet
  • [
  • Viewing file on the tablet and you want to change your laptop. No problem.
  • Look up a location on your laptop and navigate to your phone without typing.
  • file Sharing you instantly watch your team.
  • Share video you instantly watch with friends.

we would like you to give it a try and give us your feedback. Crystal Palace is built for the age of BYOD and Consumer iT. This means as a user, you can be operational within minutes.

Succeeding with DaaS: For MSP Business Help Technology Hype trumps

Succeeding with DaaS: For MSP Business Help Technology Hype trumps -

By now you may have heard of a new entrant in the office a-as-Service market, VMware buy Desktone. While I applaud the movement that will help to mature the market, I have to add a certain sobriety in their party atmosphere. Technology alone does not sell products -. Especially when the managed service provider (MSP) channel is involved

Assemble Definitely - support trade

VMware is Hyping Desktone status of first motor (they were not - Citrix was there 3 years ago), their unique technology (it is not ... just look at offers like TuCloud) and their partner base (only 40 at the moment)

for the latter, soundbites would MSPs believe the thousands of VMware partners will instantly be able to get up and sell DaaS. Our experience shows that providers must also provide the MSP with the help of the business - planning, market orientation, sales training, support pointers - if the tender is successful on market. The construction itself and they-will-come mentality does not work

I wonder what VMware can do regarding recruitment - MSP. And want to build business services that the Citrix Service Provider Program (CSP) has been providing MSP for years

what it really takes to succeed DaaS

Scaling MSP partners 40 thousands are not trivial -. VMware and will take considerable time. I guess the 41th partner want to be the Guinea pig.

The following shameless promotion is what we have built for our CSP program. It is an illustration of what we have developed for the MSP business needs ... and how we helped accelerate thousands of MSP in the DaaS space. Remember, by providing a hosted DaaS service is not the same provide a hosted Exchange Server. While DaaS highest value (by 1-2 orders of magnitude!), There is a considerable change in the company's marketing, sales, support. Not to mention a change in the buyer / user.

The Business Person we built for MSPs takes into account the fact that most MSPs have existing business models that differ significantly from the hosting service DaaS. They need to examine almost all aspects of their business if they want to succeed. So Citrix provides

  • Planning and Product Strategy: Helping to assess the market potential, identify service portfolios and service definition, consider the strategic partners (with that bundle services, etc.) and business / sales / global pricing model. None of them are trivial. Even the first year of service definition is essential to play-by MSPs core competencies and customer (see my Differentiate or Die poster for more on building differentiated services with high added value)
  • technology products and foundations : More than just infrastructure - it includes support models, implementing partners, billing, monitoring and automation of onboarding. Examine only support issues: You may be used to support your customer's IT department with technical problems. But what happens when an end user has an office problem? What happens when a new end-user needs to boarding? These are indeed new revenue opportunities (they add value), but also new skills you need to acquire
  • sales, marketing and operations :. Including marketing planning, sales training, sales ops / compensation, go-to-market and demand generation approaches. The DaaS sale differs from the sale of a dedicated server ... You are often the sale of-business line manager in an SMB as often as you sell to IT. And you're not just selling cost savings, but the sale of new features such as BYOD, mobility, data security, etc. -. Often a new sales training for your existing sales force
  • The service delivery experience : Basically the customer experience which includes discovery, testing, buying at boarding, support models etc. Put technology in place is not enough; You need the applications and users on board. There is a learning curve involved in using the new model app / desktop. All these activities should be considered

Parting Thoughts, Take

If you are an MSP looking to get into selling DaaS -. You 're about to make a good shot. But do it with as much information in hand you can. Learn about the business changes, you'll need to do, and that is best known for helping to make them.

  • Beware of vendors that require the use of their virtualization platform
  • Beware of sellers who have a record channel unequal conflict with MSP
  • Have a bias toward suppliers that offer resources of the channel construction company
  • Be sure to examine cases as much as you do technology

What are you afraid of? Empower working mothers of Ireland through mobility, according to a study

What are you afraid of? Empower working mothers of Ireland through mobility, according to a study -

A survey of Irish women professionals, commissioned by Citrix Ireland and conducted by iReach, indicates that 84 percent of women working professionals see a flexible working policy as crucial to manage motherhood and a demanding job - but that is not the reality in many companies today, despite the prospect of maintaining a integral cross section of talent and soothe the impact of new tax rules maternity leave

recent legislation sees women throughout Ireland reassess return to work after maternity leave, study shows 63 percent of female respondents see a direct positive impact on productivity in work environments with a flexible working policy. In addition, a reduction in stress levels and feel more in control (47 percent of respondents) and better ability to balance work and family life (40 percent) are considered the main advantages of culture flexible working. The survey also indicates that there are potentially a "pool of untapped talent" workers who are somehow forbidden to work or because of childcare costs and inflexibility employers.

When asked working women with children if they felt the company culture improves in Ireland for labor flexibility, 55 percent said they felt that companies across the country will never fully trust their employees to work effectively outside the office. this feeling is in agreement with Irish business decision-makers survey conducted earlier this year in which 73 percent of employers cited lack of trust of employees as the main reason not behind the implementation of flexible work policies.

not adopt a flexible working policy is a missed opportunity for companies and workers. It is necessary to re-evaluate the job options for the mother of modern work. Women want to work, they love their work - and for employers there is a huge opportunity to capitalize on this through a more inclusive environment

New tax rules under maternity see probably many families out of pocket. this study indicates that employers could retain talented key section and soothe the impact of new tax rules by investing in flexible working practices to help working women to return to work earlier if they are - the technology is available to do this. Ultimately, the adoption of a new working method can relieve the pressure on people to be at a desk from nine to five when it is not imperative to their role.

If Beaumont engineering team XenServer wrote a deep dive into the models purpose and development of APIs implemented to vGPU

. It was a bit of a whirlwind in the last month releasing sharing real hardware GPU XenServer and XenDesktop through our vGPU tech preview. The twitter fun, excitement in the industry and the incredible feedback from those who have begun using technologies has been overwhelming. He is a hard-earned praise though based on years of engineering, research and testing on multiple teams and in collaboration with NVIDIA working on their grid technologies.

XenServer evolved on the development of revolutionary hypervisor at the University of Cambridge and we employ some of the brightest talents of the best universities. The final results can be a fluid and captivating the end user, but are the result of a cutting edge and inspiration engineering. We are so confident in the quality of our technologies we invite customers and developers to our partners such as NVIDIA, Dell, IBM, Cisco and HP working on GPU technology to examine our code and architecture through our open source model .

Developer partners, if one of those super-intelligent developers of our engineering team wrote toolstack a deep dive into object models and development APIs implemented to vGPU. Maybe not as expendable as the result YouTube videos, but for those of you deep in GPU technology and want to integrate or understand the nuts and bolts must read. note can contain a depth technical overview!

If our and other developers write articles for developers and partners such as NVIDIA eager to develop new technologies on xenserver.org and provide opportunities for the more technical among you ask questions directly to developers via the Q & A section or mailing lists. They also publish regular developer to developer blogs explaining the underlying hypervisor technology on topics such as how we can achieve a density of 500 VMs per XenServer host.
Citrix invests heavily in projects GPU and if you 'want to join Simon working on projects like vGPU we have a number of development openings here in Cambridge in the XenServer engineering. Please do check our careers site if you want to join the team!

This is a must read for anyone interested in understanding the performance of the hypervisor and architecture and includes information on how our engineering team investigate the performance and throughput and internal secrets. Warning contains a depth technical overview!

Jonathan Davies, AO first blog on the subject gives an overview of events in XenServer channels and improvements in our engineering team has done. His colleague Felipe Franciosi continues the story covering the CPU usage of the QEMU process and USB emulation; Jonathan then resumes the tale in a new blog detailing our position today covering XenServer architectural features such as dom0, blktap2, xenstored, requests for aio, comforted and low dom0 memory.

Many of our partners such as Dell and HP are now making very large servers and be able to support that number VM provides customers should not experience all the limitations of the hypervisor. It, AOS also great for other Citrix products that are deployed on the XenServer platform such as NetScaler SDX, XenDesktop, and CloudPlatform VDI-in-a-box.

There, AOS much marketing information on why the VM density issues available, but these new blogs are intended for developers and engineers who want to know how we did it. Just a few weeks we started a blog developer to developer on vGPU and we were delighted with the interest it has generated. Our developers consistently displayed deep technical dives on xenserver.org blogs and we actively welcome comments and questions to our developers mailing list or Q & A section of the site. We also Aore very interested in writing more of these blogs for developers by developers so please make a comment if subjects you as a developer want to know more about!

When Applications and Networks Unite - the age of enlightened infrastructure -

Applications are squarely in the spotlight today, with the launch of Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) and the Nexus 000 solutions [

Citrix was in the application delivery business for the past two decades; it is what we are known for. Our customers deliver millions of applications - Windows, web, SaaS or Cloud - their employees and customers. We live with the layers to 4-7 applications, straddling the network level 1-3 layers.

+ Applications Networks

We have taken steps to bridge the worlds networks and applications. The purpose of our proposed collaboration with Cisco is to meet the needs of applications running on Cisco infrastructure. And if you think about it, the application delivery is what it is all about.

Our alliance has flourished in recent years. It two years ago, we started with apps - applications solutions and desktop virtualization with XenApp and XenDesktop on Cisco UCS. Our next step is to work closely with Cisco Data Center product teams in cloud networks. We worked on the integration and the integration of our leading NetScaler application delivery to controller market with Cisco Nexus 7000 and Nexus 1000V. With vpath integration, our joint customers can string virtual services through the virtual machines in the data center and Citrix NetScaler appliances are managed transparently as service blades in the Cisco Nexus infrastructure -. See below

What makes this special?

in short, this is another important step in our journey to make application-aware infrastructure . in a typical application deployment teams today, development and delivery no real ability to control the network, which is largely ignoring the unique needs of applications and unable to provide application services centered.

But now, with the work of our teams have together (and propose to continue), Cisco ACI architecture of tightly integrated application services can become sensitive applications. This application-centric approach is a basic factor of real agile flexible fluid data center and resource-wise ,.

Let us look in detail.

What?

There are two parts to the formula awareness app:

  • A centralized control fabric and an automation framework capable of implementing policies juggling: This part of the automation of policy centered allows resources to be provisioned dynamically and configured according to the application requirements. The result is that basic services such as traffic management, application delivery and firewall can be used by applications in a way that is automated, reproducible, follows-the-app and simple push-button
  • Application Services. These are the higher level applications centered services such as load balancing, firewalling, advanced optimizations, the firewall application and so on, who live in the network, but have an affinity for applications.

A collaboration between Citrix and Cisco can enable the Cisco Application Infrastructure Policy Controller (APIC) to become part of control and automation with Citrix NetScaler provide multiple application services.

APIC enables service integration solution based policies that automates step of routing network traffic to the right services based on application policies. Adding, deleting and automatic service reorganization allows applications to change quickly without having to rewire, reconfigure or move resources and services. This is the policy that evolves with the application in a topology and location independently.

Citrix NetScaler APIC works in the environment in an integrated manner providing layer 4-7 services like load balancing, application acceleration, optimization, and application security.

What to do?

Put simply, integration between NetScaler and Cisco APIC unify both management and the flow of data through hardware and software in the data center. It makes a number of things possible: ..

  1. You can automatically insert a service based on application strategies
  2. network services can now be automated with scripts leveraging open APIs
  3. You close integration of physical and virtual services appliances.
  4. With virtual LAN overlays, scale and multi-location can be woven in without any additional special processing for network services.
  5. You get visibility and statistics on the network and services.

Why is this important?

This level of + application tightly integrated network infrastructure can be a game changer.

  1. central control point - now there is a place in the network to control all the functions that the network provides. The application teams can focus on enforcement policies and the network can manage their provisioning and deployment
  2. Scalable and elastic - .. by decoupling service nodes of the service policy, we allow the elastic scale with both physical and virtual ADC appliances
  3. investment protection - integration is designed to be fully compatible with existing NetScaler deployments and deployment models
  4. Open - while that work on this integration is revolutionary, we are committed to help standardize some of the important innovations enter. For example, Cisco and Citrix lead within the IETF to define the header service network protocol (NSH) that supports the fluid movement of the two service functions and application workloads within the tissue.

join us on the application path + Networking

When you adopt the latest and greatest from Citrix and Cisco are part of this program, you can be at the forefront of this movement. However, one of the best things about our collaborative activities is that even if we work together to provide a NetScaler integration with Cisco ACI, we have integrated NetScaler with Nexus 1000V and 7000 already. These integrations serve as a prelude to fully managed ACI, bringing the benefits of application awareness to today's networks.

Summary

In conclusion, the unification and cross-leverage the application and infrastructure we see here brings based automation complete centralized policy unified data flow on all the layers 2-7. Similarly, a single pane of glass for configuration, policy and provides visibility corresponding unification in the control plane as well.

to exciting times ahead. Watch more innovation from Cisco and Citrix.

Hiding XA / XD Applications using Netscaler Rewriting features -

Why use a Netscaler to change the response of the XML broker

Citrix NetScaler is a versatile tool to distribute and modify datastreams very generic and powerful way. Especially in enterprise environments, where the protocols are often proprietary, allowing customers to add a little extra piece of plumbing protocols can not control, without the need to hire developers. This blog is about the application of such additional small piece of plumbing to one of its own Citrix protocols, the one who speaks with StoreFront XMLBroker instances of XenApp or XenDesktop. Obviously, this is not officially condoned or supported by Citrix (XMLBroker The room, the room is just regular NetScaler configuration), but it solves a problem that is usually resolved by other means unsupported such as changes in WebInterface.

Citrix NetScaler MPX / VPX is able to rewrite an HTTP response with a very powerful motor. If you set up a store to use a vserver Netscaler load balanced for XML Broker you can change the answer to any request Storefront origin of any type of receiver or device type or OS (Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad , Android, ...). He also works for Legacy to Receiver StoreFront.

If you want to hide application WebInterface please follow the instructions on http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX123969

Storefront communication with XML Broker

When a StoreFront will list the applications available to you XA / XD environment, it sends an XML request to the XML Broker servers defined in the config (also called Delivery Controller).

a sample XML broker request sent by a Storefront server to obtain the list of applications:

The server then responds XML broker with a list of applications and provides basic fields of all published applications

a sample XML broker response to a request for StoreFront :.

Each published application and desktop is defined by an XML block bounded by the tag

Ie:

application filtering based on the Application Name field in XenApp

the Application Name field specified in a XenApp published application is the "inname" tag d a broker response xml xml.

you have to create a strategy by applying rewriting (or desktop) you want to hide

Step 1 :. Configure XML Broker Vserver your Netscaler

Step 2: Create Rewrite action with the following parameters

Name xml_broker_desktop
like delete_all
term choose target reference text HTTP.RES.BODY (50000)
Pattern
Options EXTEND (40300) .REGEX_SELECT (re # s * . * * # s )

Step 3: Create Rewrite policy

name xml_broker_desktop_pol
action action name defined in step 2, namely: xml_broker_desktop
term HTTP.RES.BODY (150) .CONTAINS ( "")

Step 4: Assign the policy to Rewrite vserver XML Broker LB

- Open the vserver

- Go to policies / Rewrite / Answer

- Click "Insert Policy"

- Specify the name of the policy created in step 3

-. a "Goto phrase" select NEXT or END depend on whether this policy is the last or not

Step 5: (Optional) Update the Control your Storefront to use this XML broker vserver

Step 6 :. Enjoy !!!

NOTES

- the regular expression configured in Step 2 for the Rewrite action is to select all starting with:

and ending with

- Caring for the value set for the EXTEND command. The first value (40) defines the number of bytes to extend the selection before the pattern matching set.

In this example, the value must be greater than 37.

The second value (300) is the number of bytes from the model .

In this example, the value must be greater than 242.

If you set too high, you can include the previous Application Definition or next as in this example:

  • a EXTEND (xx, 515) or greater value will include Desktop_application_name aND Notepad in action delete_all.

Warnings

This method of rewriting package is presented "as is" and are not supported by Citrix Technical Support. I recommend you have a second parallel configured XML Broker vserver in the same Netscaler to troubleshoot your platform access XenApp / XenDesktop.
