GPU for the masses with XenApp / XenDesktop!

GPU for the masses with XenApp / XenDesktop! -

It used to be that when Citrix administrators heard the term "GPU" with XenApp / XenDesktop, many would think only professional high-end graphics.

After Citrix this type of graphics delivery pioneer back in 06 with Boeing, which resulted in the release of HDX 3D Pro technology for the industry in 09 Delivering AutoDesk, CATIA and other intensive 3D applications no longer necessary, local hardware and physical location constraints. These workloads might designers delivered almost anywhere in the world on virtually any type of device.

Well, at the end of 2015, GPUs are ready to prove themselves in prime time daily workloads with XenApp / XenDesktop.

A Web browser is one of the most widely published applications to (especially on a proper compatibility, compliance, etc. with corporate Web applications). Today's Internet / intranet content often contains many high-resolution photos that need to be made

Regular Office applications can now enormously also benefit from GPU acceleration, .:

  • Web browser
  • Microsoft Office applications
  • Unified Communication applications - Skype for business, Lync, etc.

understanding deeper - some data

respected Citrix experts Magnar Johnsen and Thomas Poppelgaard, recently announced the results of tests on a range of browsers such as Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Firefox, the GPU a on a system concludes adding a hosting server based VDA can save a lot of CPU cycles on the host and to improve usability.

This is a relatively inexpensive way to ensure the scalability of the server and at the same time also a great experience. It is an interesting read, as Magnar explains how:

    develop
  • browser at different speeds to take advantage of GPUs
  • As various specific user workflows such as scrolling to browsers and other applications be optimized

, it is only common sense.

You do not have to delve into the test data, although it can be seen all makes sense. Regular desktop users are simply always graphical user in recent years in the mainstream agencies:

  • 20 years ago, to learn something you would have to pick up a paper Training Manual; 10 years ago it was probably a Word document, HTML page or PDF file. Now if you want to know how something that you do, are likely to online training or watch a how-to guide to take on YouTube!
  • information just always more graphical and user expect this to be used to produce high quality images in movies, games and web pages - you rarely see an HTML page in these days that text-based only
  • company meetings and announcements of video or conferencing software aired regularly
  • [1945008!] Skype for business, Lync and Jabber are always standard. All that is rich audio data once a telephone network now on the LAN / WAN, along with video data, as well!

A growing trend

Recently, we have seen a sharp increase in the number of people, our XenApp GPU-sharing solutions for AMD and NVIDIA and XenDesktop NVIDIA GRID vgpu recording capabilities for their regular office workers and not only their top 10-20% of high-end designers.

Are you one of them?

by 2016. Looking ahead, it is very clear that virtualized graphics technology even become more mainstream. GPU vendors with their large existing base of 3D customers have also turned their attention to this huge market - Victoria Rege of NVIDIA GRID solutions posted about just recently. She says that when the global workforce to be mobile further the ability to graphics-rich workloads will allow to better reduce available as barriers and the benefits are realized quickly.

I'd love to hear your thoughts below Comments:

  • are the end user to affect more graphical content consuming
  • How are graphics and 3D hardware requirements
  • How will your company benefit from GPU? -enabled workloads?

Milliseconds to microseconds ... How NetApp All flash FAS storage accelerates Citrix XenDesktop operations

Milliseconds to microseconds ... How NetApp All flash FAS storage accelerates Citrix XenDesktop operations -

fifth or sixth grade in about to begin teacher points deducted when units not included (inches, pounds, meters, etc.) with numerical answers to word problems in math tests. During a recent evaluation of Citrix XenDesktop on the NetApp FAS8060 All-flash storage platform, I confess that I was guilty of forgetting to add units The majority of XenDesktop test benches.

I had previously used memory configured shelves of hard disk drives (HDDs) or hybrid storage solutions with hard drives and a small number of solid state drives (SSDs). Frankly, I'd get used to read latencies of a few milliseconds and write. When I saw latencies 450-1700 way, I thought was something wrong, and I had made a mistake, the test environment at the facility. It took a moment to realize that these latencies values in microseconds and not milliseconds. This "aha" moment lifts the low latencies of NetApp All flash FAS solution and how they can help desktop virtualization provisioning and boot times for XenDesktop to accelerate.

The objective of this test exercise was to evaluate the NetApp All flash FAS storage platform with an I / O-intensive pure virtual desktops (VDI) workload. In particular, I wanted to characterize I / O performance for XenDesktop deployment and boot storm scenarios, the results of using Machine Creation Services (MCS) and Citrix Provisioning Services to compare (PVS) for providing a 2,000-seat VDI Farm. I wanted to examine the effects of storage efficiency features such as deduplication. I have the test configuration, methodology and test results in a short white paper (here) documented that this blog summarizes.

The audit

In addition to the FAS8060 storage platform from NetApp, the testbed included (Figure 1) two network switches and 16 rack servers (14 for VDI desktops and 2 for infrastructure services). Software components include Citrix XenDesktop 7.6, Citrix Provisioning Services (PVS), Microsoft® System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2 (SCVMM) and Microsoft® Windows® Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V®. The NetApp system presents multiple iSCSI datastore on the Microsoft Hyper-V hosts for desktop storage needs.

I led two separate test phases, one with MCS and PVS, provisioning 00 persistent VDI desktops in both cases. collected At each stage I I / O metrics during desktop provisioning process and in the same boat storm scenario where all 2,000 seats were started simultaneously.

provisioning and boot storm results

Further, as shown in the table below, FAS8060 system accelerates NetApp strongly MCS provisioning and boot times. MCS Provisioning took less than 41 minutes to boot providing all 2,000 desktops and 16 minutes the desktops in a boot storm scenario. PVS took 88 minutes for the provision and 25 minutes to boot. Since PVS also write cache drives need to be copied during the deployment process, it makes sense that the provision takes longer. How PVS in expected significantly lower IOPS, during the initial deployment process and 11K as compared to 68K during the Boot Storm Test 227 compared to 41K for MCS average.

The results show that MCS is an appropriate deployment option for this size workload, since the storage system can provide sufficient IOPS. Because the NetApp FAS8060 All flash functions such as low latency, it is able to provide the necessary storage system performance for both MCS and PVS provisioning and boot operations.

efficiency analysis

Each desktop virtualization project, the cost is always a concern, and storage can often the most expensive component in the overall solution be. The NetApp FAS8060 platform and clustered Data ONTAP 8.3 operating system make more efficiencies possible for the aid to reduce the amount of memory, which can save costs.

As shown in the figure below, the NetApp storage solution allows a considerable reduction in capacity requirements for both MCS and PVS by the use of thin provisioning and always on dedupe technology. Additional memory savings would be always achieved with the additional NetApp space efficiency technologies like inline zero-elimination, sis clones and inline compression. Storage capacity for the base operating system of 40GB reduces both MCS and PVS to 24GB. would Without thin provisioning and deduplication applied MCS need about 2.8TB differencing disk for every 2,000 desktop support. With thin provisioning and deduplication only about 1.2 TB is needed, a reduction of 60%. Since PVS provisioning would require storage for write cache drives 10TB without the use of these efficiency features are needed. With thin provisioning and deduplication PVS requires only 1.2 TB-a 88% savings.

Conclusion

These tests exercise shows how the NetApp All flash FAS8060 system can provide low latency and satisfy IOPS for requires either MCS or PVS deployment of 2,000 persistent VDI desktops. Whether MCS or PVS is used NetApp always-on storage efficiency technologies reduce storage needs. (A new feature in Data ONTAP 8.3, Advanced disk partitioning also increases the capacity for data, as it eliminates the need for a dedicated root aggregate.)

Citrix and NetApp engineers together to help in many reference architectures and test scenarios customers with the design appealing, highly available and cost-effective desktop virtualization solutions. Many of these solutions are documented-inclusive offer whitepaper on this test exercise on best practices and policies, build a successful solution architecture to help. As always, it is recommended that you implement to collect metrics with typical workloads is a proof-of-concept to help suitably an insert size.

VENOM Vulnerability

VENOM Vulnerability -

This week, an advisory security identified as the "VENOM" or virtualized environment Neglected operations manipulation, CVE-2015-3456 has been publicly announced. During Citrix Synergy, I get questions like XenServer is affected, and what customers should do about it.

Citrix recently released a Security Advisory (http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX201078) on VENOM as it relates to XenServer, and while that should be your main source of updates, I thought that I here would deliver our answer some context.

Citrix is working on a hotfix for XenServer, we are planning to publish next week. Currently Citrix is not known to have publicly available exploit code for VENOM on XenServer

People often ask why it takes time to solve a hotfix. The most significant part of the answer is that each hotfix we learn to share a large number of tests. In addition to the usual functional regression tests we are (automated) tests several days Stress: If there are any problems in the patch, is the stress tests, when we find them normally. So as a background, sometimes taking a quick look at nature as VENOM could impact a XenServer deployment.

The VENOM vulnerability relates to a possible buffer overrun inside the device emulation layer (qemu) used in various virtualization platforms including Xen and KVM-based ones.

In particular, use the code to emulate a floppy drive device for HVM guests (which for most customers, this means Windows virtual machines, although on XenServer 6.5, newer versions of Linux guest in HVM mode run). While XenServer does not really make a floppy device visible to each VM, the code is still present.

Because of the additional security features in XenServer, is our assessment of the situation that the Venom vulnerability could currently not be exploited for a guest unauthorized access to data to obtain.

We will continue up to date on the security bulletin and to keep course, if you have any questions get in touch with Citrix Support.

The ACE migration tool now in Citrix Insight Services platform, transforming your existing ACE configuration files NetScaler configuration files takes only seconds.

starting to collect Cisco ACE configuration files. Please note that this tool converts an ACE virtual context configuration file to a dedicated NetScaler instance. This does not support all virtual ACE contexts be converted to a NetScaler configuration at once, use the other forms of virtualization: Traffic Domains and Admin partitions. For example, the Cisco ACE 4710 to migrate with 4 virtual contexts to a NetScaler SDX, you need to use the tool for each virtual context on the ACE, then copy the converted configuration in at each of the 4 VPX instances on the NetScaler SDX. A manual approach is necessary in order to merge configs ported NetScaler in one, the traffic domains and / or admin partitions.

With Apple Notifications Service Push for Citrix WorxMail safe

With Apple Notifications Service Push for Citrix WorxMail safe -

Are you a Citrix XenMobile user? Have WorxMail notifications in your area push?

If so, you might be a little concerned about your Exchange server to cloud-hosted Citrix exposed push notification services. And why should not you? Finally, the Exchange Server is one of the most sensitive units in an organization

There is no need to worry. You will not be deprived elegant push notification services for Citrix WorxMail. Here is a practical solution.

What is pain? Once the device for push notifications with Exchange Server with Citrix Push Notification Services (CPNS) is drawn, you must have Exchange Server CPNS informing for new events in the user's mailbox. Many organizations are concerned about security when the Exchange server receives traffic from public Internet in their internal network.

Add

IT administrators new firewall rules, Exchange servers need to allow to communicate with CPNS. Of course, no one would be convenient to do so, and if there are multiple CAS servers, it is to add a big pain firewall rules for each CAS server.

So what do you do?

As already mentioned, there is no reason for concern. There is still a possibility to use Citrix sexy push notification services, making any firewall changes, regardless of where and how many CAS servers are there.

exists as a XenMobile customer, Citrix NetScaler has already in your environment with load balancing (LB) and SSL functions.

This solution is referred to as "reverse-LB" approach. Usually when LB is used VIP is always accessible from the Internet and internal resources to be added as a service. In this particular solution has VIP from internal resources of Exchange Server and CPNS public FQDN should be ie available to be added as a service.

, is required also as an SSL bridge feature along with LB, so no additional server certificate is used to NetScaler for the LB vServer. See Citrix eDocs for more details on SSL-bridge.

As shown in the chart above, the NetScaler LB CPNS is bound as a service. The Exchange server in the internal network sends requests to LB VIP which in turn forwarded to CPNS and so on. In this way, all the traffic goes through LB, which can be monitored in NetScaler and additional rules can be added as needed for more safety.

An important note for this solution to work is , the CPNS listeners FQDN service must be solved instead of real IP LB VIP. This can by adding a DNS entry or make host file entry in Exchange Server are performed. Ensure only in Exchange Server FQDN LB VIP is corrected, where as on NetScaler need it to solve real IP

The following are NetScaler LB vServer commands create .:

  • enable ns feature SSL IB
  • Server SVR cpns_listener_fqdn add
  • Add service src SVR SSL_BRIDGE 443
  • Add lb vserver ssl_bridge_vip SSL_BRIDGE vserver_ip_address 443
  • bind lb vserver ssl_bridge_vip src

for myself and colleagues who happened to some of the latest technologies on a daily basis to see and interact, we forget that sometimes for some people, technology is just an afterthought. For them it is just a means to an end. For clinical staff that "job" is to provide the best care for, are able to make sure who it is sitting on towards them.

not follow health when compared to many other industries, the prototypical 8:00 to 5:00 p.m. working. Clinicians require seamless access to clinical applications and data 24/7, because the intensive care can not easily and will not wait.

In an industry where seconds can literally mean life or death, there must be solutions in place, doctors and other healthcare workers must give immediate access quality Care. Clinicians, as already mentioned, do not have to worry about the luxury of time, why an application is slow or the start not, they only need it to work. Period.

Citrix has a long track record in the above-mentioned challenges and allows caregivers seamless applications and data access to provide the best quality care for their patients are available, and we know it is important that IT to provide -Personal available (which are usually usually forced resource) to ensure the tools that they need 100% availability of their environments. Tools that IT with proactive-as opposed to a reactive approach offer, and provide IT administrators the power they need, my clinical friend up to make sure no "to require assistance."

One of our Citrix Ready partners in the healthcare, Goliath Technologies, has come up and developed by creating a series of fully integrated technologies that are specifically built and designed for the challenges of IT in health care with a unique solution to Administrators give the possibility to anticipate, fix and resolve performance problems. Your product goes beyond the limits of passive surveillance, provides a proactive approach, provides actionable data and even take action to solve problems.

For our healthcare customers Goliaths is Software focuses on end-to -end visibility in environments that use Citrix to deliver EMR / EHR applications. This includes registration and initiation process to meeting performance and all IT elements that can affect the performance.

End User Experience is crucial in an "always on" 24/7 environment and Goliath solution provides unique functionality know administrators to help, in advance, if it be a problem if they try their applications are accessing. Your Logon simulator for Citrix actually log on to the application, the same steps would take a real end user to ensure himself by NetScaler to that the registration is successful. If an error occurs or slow it will send an alarm.

So, planned in a customer as the Goliath Logon Simulator from remote locations login from two hours before staff came to the hospital applications to ensure an administrator, were available and if it is not alarmed him with enough time to the to resolve problem. This is really proactively. Talk about preventative medicine!

They have also taken the approach of adding deep metrics on Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop and the supporting infrastructure, the direct impact for end users regarding login duration and session performance. This functionality is also ready, because they have done the necessary API integration and development, dashboards and screens with real-time logon hours broken down by stage and ICA channel to fill drill-down from the box.

to give a detailed example of how detailed and actionable information is a doctor was with image resolution have trouble if a clinical application of access from home , The administrator could ICA latency channel real-time Dashboard on meeting performance drill down into the use and noticed that the doctor also audio streaming was what the available bandwidth was occupying. He was asked to turn off the audio streaming and problem was solved.

to complete the end-to-end image, they are the only performance monitoring company, the purpose-built application modules for the various does EMR / EHR applications. Right now, they have application modules for MEDITECH, Siemens, Allscripts, T-Systems and McKesson with Epic and Cerner in development. This purpose-built modules enable them to bind together in a view to the end user, Citrix infrastructure and application performance. Alerts are generated when there is a breach of a threshold metric that could signal registration period or session performance with the EMR / EHR application sessions to an upcoming performance problem, which can then be traced to the cause with registration Initiation be.

1) Rights Management Server role on the Active Directory.

2) AD RMS administrator group on Active Directory.

3) Federated Delivery mailbox account user added to this Administrators group on the Exchange server.

4) Super Users group function enables the AD RMS management tool in Active Directory.

it is necessary to test the IRM configuration after the above four points are met. Points 3 and 4 has been covered in this blog.

How IRM configuration

Use to validate Get and Test cmdlets to validate RMS, use to under cmdlets in Exchange Management Shell IRM config address:

overall result should show as pASS

Okay, after the IRM configuration is successfully validated, let us needed to go through other configurations:

  1. MDX-policy configuration for WorxMail in XMS server
  2. create RMS templates ..
  3. End User Experience during IRM with WorxMail on iOS enabled.

1) WorxMail MDX policy for IRM.

Assuming that you have done XMS initial and WorxMail 10.0.x added in XMS server as an App, IRM configuration is pretty straight forward in iOS app.

Add distribution -member FederatedEmail.4c1f4d8b-8179-4148-93bf-00a95fa1e042 -Identity RMS_SUPER_USER .

2. Super-User Group function activates the AD RMS management tool in Active Directory with

Enabling superuser go to guidelines securities in cluster -> Super users -> Enable super user under Actions in the right pane. The pop-up window, enter the email address of the superuser group in AD. I've created

RMS_SUPER_USER distribution group in AD with an email address. The e-mail address is used herein to allow the user group.

2) Preparation of RMS templates.

create below Follow a template on Rights Management Server (RMS). Screenshot have installed below assume you RMS on a Windows 08 R2 system

Read Active Directory Rights Management Service. -> expand cluster -> Select Rights Policy Template -> on the right plate select template create marketing rights

Out with the old: Driving Relevant services as a hosting service provider

Out with the old: Driving Relevant services as a hosting service provider -

I have in Europe in the world to visit some of the largest telephone companies. I have a common thread found drawn between this great service, and it is the paradox they are facing in terms of their livelihoods.

In most cases, they will have tremendous brand awareness. Their range is phenomenal (millions of subscribers service) and they have more network capacity than each company could imagine.

So what is the dichotomy?

Believe it or not, it is Service . You see most of these big service companies grew around the simple premise that the network was service. As long as its subscribers could "access" network, they had relevance.

no longer

.

networking without applications and data can be seen as a raw material Services

The network is synonymous these days with goods. Commodity Services have only one value: Price. And because the price of these services falls, so does the ability to reach margin. This is widely used in large service provider advertising. Get bandwidth 'X' 'Y' price.

Throughout the world, this seems to be the value to be proposition. But while savvy business customers-especially the small / medium business (SMB) segment looking applications and data services, networks (and bandwidth for less) are an afterthought.

SMBs services want that are relevant to their business. You want to step up service and deliver. For it is not only relevance access or bandwidth, but real business applications.

I took this photo while I was in London. In the foreground of the Tower of London, which dates back several centuries. It was the center of the United Kingdom in its hay-day. Now, it houses the Crown Jewels and is primarily a tourist attraction. What once was relevant, is now nothing more than a bit of antiquity; only a memory.

It reminded me that the world is changing and with it the importance of relevancy.

In the background you can see a structure climbing into the sky, as if its meaning cry for. It is the splitter, a 1,016 foot landmark in the center of London, built for the companies of the 21 st century, it is the tallest building in the EU.

business flow tenancy to have there because of its fascination, its meaning. What a great reminder of change.

As service providers offer more relevant?

We have in history not look too far back to see what kind of company, the relevance lacking happen.

Wang, DEC and Sun Microsystems are examples of large technology companies, the mementos of ancient times. In the service provider market, we have seen some of this consolidation. So whatever happened to Pacific Bell or Bell South? Do they also mementos of antiquity?

So what is to do a phone company?

What is to connect with the hundreds of smaller Citrix Service Provider, the applications and data exchange solutions for hundreds of thousands of subscribers? Probably a good idea.

Take, for example, Digicel, AT & T or TeliaSonera. You have taken the first step in the pushback toward relevance for the SMB. Over bandwidth or network, they have chosen to provide services that are actually relevant to their business customers. Who will be next? We have to wait and see.

One thing is certain ... Citrix these services is made possible, and our Citrix Service Provider support to remain relevant. Want to know more? Why learn no more and gain value by being the Citrix Service Provider Program member today?
