Customize AppCenter XenApp 6.5

Customize AppCenter XenApp 6.5 -

In multilingual environments, which let Windows 08 R2 installation is English and you add MUI language packs, the XenApp 6.5 AppCenter console will pick up the language the current user while many would require the console to use the English language.

Furthermore, customers with XenApp Enterprise can not use Citrix Single Sign on (formerly Password Manager) product as it is not included in the XenApp licensing model (see http: //www.citrix .com / products / xenapp / features / editions.html).

I wanted to share with you two possible customizations, but not officially supported, to avoid installing the Single Sign-on Module to the inside the Citrix AppCenter console and change the language of the console before or after installation.

1) Avoid Citrix Single-Sign On rapid discovery and display inside AppCenter

Citrix AppCenter

Before install the AppCenter or XenApp:

on the location where the XenApp 6.5 ISO was extracted, navigate to administration folder Delivery services Console Resource . The Global.xml file contains the default configuration used when installing AppCenter console or via the XenApp autorun or via the installation package AppCenter (CtxInstall.msi in Administration Delivery Services Console file) .

Locate the ASC-CPMConsole Global.xml line in the file (should be line 13) and change the value of True to False in the section (line 17).

Save the changes and intallation Citrix Single Sign On console will be installed.

After the AppCenter or XenApp installation:

Once installed, Citrix AppCenter is located in C: Program Files (x86) Citrix Delivery services Console Framework Citrix . However, the Citrix Single-Sign On Console folder is C: Program Files (x86) Password Manager Citrix MetaFrame Console

To prevent the Single-Sign On prompt discovery and display. Single-Sign On component in Citrix AppCenter, rename the file console MetaFrame Password Manager .

2) Change the language Citrix AppCenter after installation

Unfortunately I could not find a pleasant and effective way to force the display language for Citrix AppCenter to English via a registry entry or a change in the configuration file.

the fastest solution is to simply rename the language files from Citrix Citrix Delivery Services Console Framework (default in C: Program Files ( x86) on a XenApp 6.5 server). At the next launch, Citrix AppCenter automatically display all details in English

Change :. Comments following the publication of the article, indicated that the above steps are not always enough and, more importantly, that I left on the details of Citrix policy engine. So, to be extended here are the folders you need to rename the language subfolders (de, es, fr, ja, and zh-CN) to force the English to all the details of AppCenter, including policy engine Citrix:

C: Program Files (x86) Citrix Group Policy management
C: Program Files (x86) Citrix Group Policy management Extensions
C: Program Files (x86) Citrix Group Policy management ExtensionsV2
C: Program Files (x86) Citrix XenApp management XenApp

notes

to publish Citrix AppCenter, follow the detailed process in CTX126752 or visit this blog from Citrix: / blogs / 2012/01 / 19 / citrix-station- taskpad-view /

I also recommend to take advantage of delegated administration allows, for example, helpdesk to manage XenApp sessions (the function is explained in Citrix eDocs).

NetScaler Traffic Areas: A multi-location alternative

5:25 PM Add Comment
NetScaler Traffic Areas: A multi-location alternative -

Historically, application delivery controller (ADC) generally worked on the bottom layer of the broadcast domains without logical separation. In terms of TCP / IP network to these areas are configured and configuration Layer 2 VLANs are just one example of the creation of these small areas. VLANs but have limited visibility and reach within the layer 2/3. As such devices had reduced ADC protocols and conspicuity applications and upper layer traffic did not get any benefits. Yet the multi-tenant environments frequently require the same IP addresses are supported across multiple networks of different clients.

NetScaler with "areas of movement" provide visibility all the way to the layer 7 and core applications. These areas allow overlap backend IP address spaces within a single instance. Admins can now associate a domain traffic with a VLAN, and then for that domain VLAN / traffic, freely use any IP address, for shears, VIP and back-end services without having to worry about property disputes intellectual between different areas of traffic. A key advantage is that the separation of applications in a single device; applications in a specified domain can not see the packets belonging to this area.

The main deployment scenario for the areas of circulation is about multi-tenancy and having routing / separate traffic flows in one physical or virtual NetScaler appliance. This configures the fields of traffic to create multiple virtual NetScaler instances with IP duplication within the same network and the environment. Administrators can define multiple networks based on VLAN and manage independently. IP addresses and corresponding IP-based routing policies may overlap without leakage of traffic from one network to another. Each client is totally private.

NetScalertraffic areas are a cost effective way to deploy very "load balancing-as-a-service" in a cloud environment among many other use cases. So while you may not need the full power of NetScaler SDX multi-tenant solutions with their complete isolation calculation processing, memory, and SSL I / O, it is good to know that you have an alternative.

HDX leaps forward in XenDesktop 7 -

Citrix HDX (High Definition Experience) technology to deliver rich applications for Windows users on any device or network connection takes a big leap forward in XenDesktop 7, the release of Avalon Excalibur project. Here are some highlights:

  • professional graphics applications can now be delivered with high performance GPU sharing and deep compression based on H.264 to higher rates of over 50% that previously possible framework, providing a smooth experience with excellent efficiency of bandwidth, even with very large 3D models. For less demanding case of 3D use, the new software screening technologies for DirectX and OpenGL provide a cost effective alternative to the GPU hardware. Composition and Bureau Redirection leverages DirectX Windows Device graphics processing capabilities to provide a highly interactive user experience.
  • Mobile workers noticed that the video frame rate on 3G connections to 800 Kbps is more than double what it was before. HDX and Windows Media Redirection, previously available for Windows and Linux, is extended to Mac, iOS and Android, improve server scalability by moving the rendering to the user's device [Note:  These enhancements will be introduced in post-Excalibur releases of Receiver]. In addition, this technology can leverage outboard of the CPU hardware to conserve battery power on mobile devices.
  • multicast support has been extended to Windows Media, which greatly reduces the bandwidth required to deliver live video events to branches. And caching the video with CloudBridge has been extended to support the content retrieved by the user's device, even for economies more bandwidth.
  • The main improvements in the delivery of XenDesktop UC applications were announced by Microsoft (Lync), Cisco (Jabber) and Avaya (one-X Communicator). And Local Access App provides a new solution for Windows applications that require or benefit from local resources, including Citrix GoToMeeting with HD Faces. (More on Local Access App in a future blog.)
  • XenDesktop 7 introduces full support for Windows 8 with a high level of interactivity and graphical quality. Make sure you watch the demo of Windows 8 Synergy Keynote delivery to an iPad!

XenDesktop 7: Upgrade and migration routes for XenDesktop and XenApp customers -

With the release of XenDesktop 7 just around the corner we are often asked which version of XenDesktop recommend us and how to migrate existing environments in previous versions of XenApp and XenDesktop. I would like to highlight some of the ways you can easily adopt XenDesktop 7 for your deployments in addition to highlighting some of the direction we are heading to further simplify migration in the future.

Moving to XenDesktop 7

If you are a customer of XenDesktop today, there are three ways to go to XenDesktop 7 when available later this month:

1. New installation. If you are a new customer Citrix XenDesktop or XenApp customer if you are eager to deploy XenDesktop 7 App edition as profit from your subscription benefit, a new installation is the recommended method. New facility offers a new approach start deploying XenDesktop 7 in your environment. Guests can also enjoy the simplified procedure to install, easy to configure and the latest features in XenDesktop 7.

  • For XenApp client, you can use StoreFront 2.0 applications and overall jobs between your existing XenApp and XenDesktop your new 7 apps Edition site - providing users with transparent access point to all single applications, whether running on Windows Server 08, Windows Server 08R2 and Windows Server 2012 .
  • for XenDesktop 5.x customers who want to exploit new HDX capabilities in XenDesktop 7 (for example, new HDX functionality or deliver Windows 8 VDI), but do not have time to deploy or 5.x upgrade your delivery controller yet, you can install version 7 VDA Windows 7 or Windows 8, and it will record and work with your administration controller 5.x existing.

2. upgrade in place. XenDesktop supports up 7 upgrade XenDesktop VDA 5 and controller. XenDesktop 5 customers already This approach allows to update seamlessly and quickly to the latest version, without necessarily disrupting or re-planning their XenDesktop deployment. Customers can perform the upgrade on site VDA to bring their image of gold to the latest version. Once updated, users will be able to immediately benefit from the new HDX capabilities in XenDesktop delivered 7. Do note that Citrix does not support upgrading on site Excalibur Tech Preview, or XenDesktop 4.

3. migration tool. For XenDesktop 4 customers XenDesktop 7 provides a migration tool to help you migrate from XenDesktop 4 to XenDesktop 7. The migration tool will export your XenDesktop 4 data in an XML file, which can then be imported into your 7 new XenDesktop site. Due to a number of new enhancements in XenDesktop 7, the migration tool does not migrate administrators, licenses, office group of files or registry keys.

For XenApp clients, if you are wondering how to migrate your XenApp to XenDesktop 7, read on ...

simplified migration by Merlin

Enterprise migration software can be agonizing for IT administrators. This agony can be described in terms of the end user misfortune, cost (CAPEX and OPEX), and the Availability service throughout the migration. Desktop virtualization deployments, most migrations accompany migration windows.

A Synergy Anaheim, presented the new orchestration application layer as part of the next version of Merlin of Avalon. The layer Orchestration App will provide customers the ability to manage XenApp 6.5 and XenDesktop delivery sites 7.x all from a single interface through an orchestration engine to the desired state. This orchestration layer also allows customers to manage deployments spanning multiple sites. Further reduce specific consoles to the site and providing a global view of your Citrix deployment and ensure consistent configuration. You can watch the session in small groups on Merlin here.

When we announced the strategy Avalon one of the most requested features was the ability to support existing deployments with the orchestration application layer. The migration capability allows you to adopt your new app orchestration for delivery sites, and then migrate your existing XenApp and XenDesktop deployments at your own pace. We designed this feature around five basic principles for a successful migration:

  1. Do not change the production environment. Migration activities take place when users access the production environment for their day to day. The elimination of any change in the production environment provides assurance that the users can not be affected during the migration activity.
  2. Making seamless migration for users. When you are ready to migrate users to the new site of delivery, it is important that the migration event is completely transparent to the user. Think of a Web service, as a user, you do not worry about which version of ShareFile you go. All you care about is this set of applications and desktops that you had when you are available offline the next time you need them.
  3. Enable phased migration. Many XenApp and XenDesktop deployments serve hundreds of applications and desktop catalogs to thousands of users across different groups of delivery. When approaching migration you want to migrate the application and the various workstations in steps based on the state of criticality mission. Users are no different; you should be able to migrate different groups of users in stages.
  4. Allow the rollback capacity quickly if problems arise. When migrating applications, desktops and separate groups of users if a problem occurs, you should be able to automatically restore the existing production environment without having to manually reconfigure the paths of access or restore rights.
  5. provide feedback on migratory status. Because you approach the stepwise migration and continuing to use your existing production environment alongside the new deployment's important to have a view of the table clear edge to what has already been migrated and status . If changes are made to production deployment allowing you to re-offer or migration of the user groups to the new site.

In the Merlin release, we respect these principles through the new integrated migration feature in the powerful orchestration application layer. This will allow you to migrate at your own pace by decoupling the user groups, desktop applications and catalogs, and the rights of the existing environment through a guided experience. Provide a reproducible approach that aligns the automated way customers approach the migration today without requiring facts scripts house or manual tasks.

But if you have applications or desktops on XenApp or XenDesktop that you do not want to migrate but just under aggregate StoreFront. App orchestration simplifies this process by taking the manual task of updating the aggregation rules that would otherwise be repeated with each cluster and automating StoreFront. Because the application orchestration has the affinity of the user, lease and location policy, it can help to automatically update the aggregation rules within your multi-site deployment.

Summary

Migration to the best class desktop virtualization product has never been easier. Customers looking to upgrade to XenDesktop 7 have multiple options depending on your use case and the existing environment. Then with the release Merlin we will take the next step in the simplified migration guided through the application orchestration. Look out for more posts in the future that will go into more details on migration.

Tips / Secrets for using App-V Integration with XenDesktop 7.0 -

XenDesktop 7.0 is out and it supports applications and Desktop Virtualization. One of the main features of this version is support for Microsoft App-V. As the first version to the App-V support, here are some tips / things to consider for easy deployment of App-V 5.0 in a XenDesktop environment.

  • XenDesktop 7.0 supports on App-V server deployment scenario where admin using App-V Management Server and Publishing Server to manage applications.
  • Microsoft App-V client does not support more than 5 Publishers. In Citrix Desktop Studio, although the administrator can add management and Studio IU Publisher, it can also add multiple publication servers using low-level SDKs. It is recommended to add only 5 Publishers. Although studio SDKs low take more than five publication servers, studio lists App-V applications first 5 Publishers.
  • When adding the management server and server publishing in the publishing node App-V, if the connection fails test and App-V Server is running, make sure WinRm that is operational.
  • Once the Virtual Desktop Agent is installed on the server / client, make sure that CtxAppVCOMAdmin is a member of the administrator group. This is necessary as some of the App-V operation on the side of VDA need administrator privileges. This is the pre-created user account by Citrix XenDesktop VDA installation. [CTX138057]
  • It is recommended to enable SharedContentStoreMode, EnablePackageScripts in the App-V configuration on the VDA side for better performance app launch.
  • Intermittently, end users may face App launch failures as "sync App-V server failed." This occurs if LogonRefresh or IntervalRefresh occurs simultaneously on the bottom (VDA). It is recommended to wait for a while and try again. This should solve the problem. [CTX138056]
  • default, XenDesktop 7.0 supports the App-V deployment in application and desktop and application delivery group. To support App-V deployment Desktops single distribution group, the user must run the following PowerShell commands.
 1. Get-BrokerDesktopGroup #Enumerates all groups of stations at the site
 2. Get-BrokerMachineConfiguration -Name APPV * #Enumerates all APPV Blobs at the site.
 3. Add-BrokerMachineConfiguration -Name APPV XYZ -DesktopGroup UID (UID is obtained from the output of the first commandlet & APPV XYZ of the output of the second commandlet)

  • Sessions SometimesApp-V application are not properly disconnected when the user closes all applications. To avoid such cases, please add the following keys in the server / client ADV [CTX138138]
 The worker RDS:

Internals PVS 2 - How to properly size your memory

Internals PVS 2 - How to properly size your memory -

I'm really surprised, but it has already been eight months I wrote the first part of the internal PVS. I am very busy recently, so please accept my apologies it took so long to complete the second part of the blog.

In the first part, I've prepared the theoretical ground for the discussion on the appropriate size of the memory. You should already understand the concept of caching the manager of Windows

Introduction

There are many misunderstandings and misconceptions about Provisioning Services - . And one of them is that PVS requires a huge amount of memory to function properly. Yes, PVS uses memory (as a setting not hide expensive mechanism), but that does not mean you need to build supercomputer using Provisioning Services. Why PVS requires spare memory have been discussed in my previous article -. It is a service that is truly toleverage designed your unused memory

When you ask a consultant regarding proper sizing of the PVS memory, you will probably be to get "it depends" answer (do not like you not?) or you will get calculations based on reliable estimates. If you do not have the time or resources to do proper sizing, I highly recommend our white paper consultation describing advanced memory considerations for Provisioning Services (CTX125126). However (similar to the situation with pagefiles), it is strongly recommended that an exercise of good design - each project is different and sizing requirements may be completely different if you publish desktops with tons of applications by compared to the situation where you simply publish locked published applications. And you want to identify if more memory is required before deployment in production

There are two utilities that I like to use when I work with PVS -. We will give you very good overall view of the environment, while the second can be regarded as caching Swiss knife and can give you very specific details for your design.

Tools for calibration memory

There are two tools that I really love and use every time I touch a PVS server. They work perfectly together:

  • Resource Monitor - The resource monitor is one of the most underrated integrated tools you can find in the Windows stack. The resource gives you a very nice overview of your environment monitor - you can easily find the bottlenecks, see an overview of CPU activity, memory, disk and network ... and you can always dig deeper to get More details. Resource Monitor is the perfect combination of Performance Monitor and Task Manager
  • RAMMap -. RAMMap is an excellent tool for a more detailed examination of Mark Russinovich. As mentioned in the previous article, PVS only uses physical memory for caching (pagefile is not used for the cache before) and RAMMap gives you perfect details on using your RAM.

When you combine them, you can see an overview of your memory use, but also see the details needed to make appropriate decisions. Be aware that if the Resource Monitor is updated in real time, RAMMap requires manual refresh.

Recommended Approach

To monitor the memory usage, we will use the two utilities. Although the Resource Monitor will provide us information about the overall memory consumption, we will use RAMMap to determine the amount of memory that we need for each vDisk

The whole process can be defined as follows :.

  1. Clear Cache waiting for clear results
  2. boot target device screen logon - 1 st check
  3. Wait for Windows to fully load - 2 nd See
  4. Logon first user - 3 e See
  5. Run regular applications, ideally performed by regular users - 4 e check
  6. stop target device - 5 e check
  7. review memory requirements
  8. Boot as many devices as you want and let it run for a few days weeks

calibration example

below you can find a step by step process to understand the memory usage of your PVS servers.

Environment consists of a single image Windows Server 08 R2 will provide only IE application. The image size is 40 GB and we store our vDisk locally.

First, we closed all devices using PVS to get a clear picture of our environment. Nothing should read from the PVS server and make sure that you are not copying data PVS server

We use RAMMap to erase the previous day cover (option "empty Waiting List" ) :.

right now, our PVS server is running with empty cover before. We can easily confirm this by looking at the Resource Monitor

Now it's time to start our VM (s). I usually start several virtual machines simultaneously - because they are the start of both the standard image, it should not be much difference between the start of one or more virtual machines

Once we begin the startup. virtual machines, we can see that the waiting cache increases:

If we go to RAMMap and select "File Summary" tab, we can see clearly who is responsible for filling the cache:

Have you noticed anything? The .VHD file is not only stored in the cache before, but in the active page of pool too. This is caused by the StreamProcess.exe process. This is important because certain pages are active and monitoring the size of the queue cache is not an accurate representation (since almost 25% of total is not stored in the standby cache).

As soon as we hit the login screen (Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to log in), we can see that the picture takes about 450 MB of memory:

Standby hides the other hand is already 561 megabytes. This is caused by the fact that Windows is not only caching of our .VHD file, but also any other buffered read operation:

Now we can say that PVS needs to read ~ 450MB to start fully Windows Server 08 R2, but this statement would not be correct. Remember the "Lie-To-Child" my previous article Windows is much more complicated than we want to admit it and there's a lot more under the hood than meets the eye. So while preparing logon (and you can actually sign already), there is still a lot of ongoing operations in the background.

therefore, it is important to identify when we . decide that Windows is fully initialized in my case, I always book farm configurations through group policy, so I'll wait until XenApp joined the firm - and to be sure it's really slow, I'll wait until the specified load is 0 (qfarm / load) - for your information, the difference between "firm join" and "no load" is about 250 MB:

now I can say that the image XenApp full charge requires about 735 MB compared to a simple control of the login screen, you can see the difference of nearly 300 megabytes .

The next important step is the opening session. On average, the first user logon, it will take an additional 50-60 MB (at least with the local accounts), even if your default profile is only 1 MB. The potential reason (I just take it as a fact and never spend too much instruction time) is that there are other components of the operating system involved in the first connection - for example API calls specific (libraries that are not yet downloaded):

After we log out of the first user, we can see that our situation is very similar with the first logoff - again, this is not a simple withdrawal of the case, but the additional API are involved:

Just to show you the difference between the cache and ensures use the actual file memory, here is the same capture resource monitor. Note that waiting cache is 1292 MB (as we have seen previously only 740MBs are actually used by our vDisk):

The difference between these two figures can actually tell you how much memory you should allocate to the cache of the PVS server to a minimum (+ operational default cache system + vDisk cache system). Our default recommendation is to reserve 512 MB of system cache for the operating system itself, you can see that this number reflects pretty well the experience of real life

This is worth the first logon logoff -. The rest of the users are not affected by this. This is similar to the first impact of the application user continuously building its cache and streaming application. Can you pre-cached the first user? Hardly, the only possible solution would be self-opening session with a strictly limited user or to initiate the process that will also load the user's profile, however, this requires careful consideration for safety reasons. The majority of data reads during profile creation are actually from the System32 folder and not from the C: Users folder itself. The potential gain is probably very low for XenApp servers, but could be more interesting for workloads XenDesktop (and could potentially lead to PVS Internals 3 items).

Our server can be considered fully prepared for the user load at this stage - now it's time to ask your pilot users for testing. At the end, you might be very surprised - in my case, the average memory requirements for running a few servers for 4 days was only around 1 GB

Does this mean that I have only 3 GB of memory for my PVS server (2GB for OS, and 1 GB for vDisk)? Certainly not, and it would be very bad decision. Let's take a look at our sizing formula

+ 2GB (4GB #XA_vDisk *) + (* #XD_vDisk 2GB) + 15% (buffer)

We just proved our vDisk does not require more memory recommended, in this case the recommendation would be to stick with 4 GB of memory per vDisk. If our test reveal higher memory requirements, we need to increase this requirement, however, with few exceptions, this formula should cover the majority of cases. Remember that you must provide a cache system for non-PVS related pages (this is included in a 15% buffer).

Be aware that this does not mean you have to reserve 1 GB of memory for this vDisk. The purpose is to optimize PVS ~ 80% of disk loading, if PVS needs to read from a disk time to time, it does not mean that your design is wrong.

Summary

There are some general guidelines that you must follow when you are sizing memory for PLWHA.

  • not use the size of the vDisk to calculate memory requirements. the cache manager is cached blocks, not entire files, so you do not need to plan caching entire VHD in memory. You'll probably be surprised at how little memory you actually need for the average operating system.
  • Do not aim to cache 100% read operations. not aim to provide 100% read cache operation - you can probably provide 80% success rate with as much as 2-4GB memory for each vDisk (with exceptions of course)
  • does not use the cache waiting for sizing [ Windows will try to cache all, as long as there is enough memory - and files are never removed from cache unless that 'there is a better use of that memory. If you leave your PVS server for a few weeks and then decide you need to buy more RAM, as there is no free memory, you must return to PVS Internals 1 and read more carefully this time. As I tried to explain, PVS actually requires much less memory than most people expect.
  • Do not underestimate the memory of your VM. Having a lot of server memory PVS itself, while not having enough memory to your VM is very common mistake. Remember that your target devices also use the system cache - and this reduces the re-bed the PVS server. You must reserve at least 500 MB for a single OS user and at least 2 GB for multi-user OS for use by the system cache.
  • Clear the cache before calibration. Be sure to always hide empty eve before recording the numbers to get clear results. Windows tries to cache everything, so it's easy to get your cache "filled". This is quite normal and as explained above, with the priority cache manager, the individual operations are not going to replace your frequently accessed data blocks. For your final sizing numbers, do not forget to add some overhead (usually around 15%).
  • Identify breakpoints in your tests. Do not expect that Windows is fully charged when the logon screen appears. As you will see in your tests, it is still reading the data in the background.
  • Be aware of any component that reads all the files. antivirus If you have misconfigured or other components that can read the disc, the waiting cache can easily fill. Be sure to monitor your use of cache to detect these questions in advance. This problem can occur both on the PVS server and the target device itself.
  • Use our magic formula unless you have a very specific reason not to. This formula covers the majority of implementations. Unless you have a very specific reason to do so or if you have many vDisks, you should follow. Just to remind you, here it goes again:

+ 2GB (4GB #XA_vDisk *) + (* #XD_vDisk 2GB) + 15% (buffer)

I also want to thank my colleagues Dan Allen, Nicholas Rintalan and Pablo Legorreta (in alphabetical order, so they do not fight) for their help!

XenDesktop 7: Thinking of upgrading your controllers

XenDesktop 7: Thinking of upgrading your controllers -

There are a few weeks, Citrix announced XenDesktop web output 7. Many of you are probably thinking the best way to spend what you have today to XenDesktop 7. If you are not sure whether to build a new, upgrade or migration, you should check out this blog by Joe Vaccaro.

Now, if you think about upgrading, read on ... With XenDesktop 7.0 you can easily choose to upgrade your existing XenDesktop 5.x site. To do this, you can follow the steps detailed here - http://support.citrix.com/proddocs/topic/xendesktop-7/cds-xd-upgrade-procedure.html

One important and final stages of the upgrade process is to register the auditors with the site using the studio. In this blog, I want to explain how it is when you have one or more controllers in the site.

The in place upgrade option offers its customers the greatest possible uptime for your website. If you have only one controller handling your site, you should plan downtime throughout the upgrade binary and the process of making the database level. However, if you have multiple monitors, you can reduce downtime by improving window half of your controllers at a time, allowing the appropriate controllers to manage user connections during the various stages of upgrade.

If you have a single or multi-controller site, the general process is to improve your license server, your workers (ADV) and the Controller software. After that, you will need to use Studio to upgrade the database schema and register services on your controllers updated.

Start upgrading ...

Let's start with upgrading half of the Site Controllers running the Metainstaller on controllers. In this example, I had license server and studio installed on the controller, so that all installed components I upgraded simultaneously.

The database can be updated automatically or manually. If you do not have database rights required, you can select "Manual Update" to generate scripts that can be transmitted to a DB administrator. I chose "Start auto-update site" in the screen below.

You will be prompted to confirm that you have backed up your data. As a best practice to ensure that no production server is upgraded without taking a backup of the security database.

Upgrading the database schema starts, runs some tests and complete. Once completed, you can view the upgrade report by clicking on "View Report" that displays the details of all the successful work performed, warnings and failures if any, have taken place. Note that this upgrade report can not be re-generated, so save it in case you need to refer to the details of the report in the future.

If you have only one controller on your site or have updated all controllers at once, you have completed your upgrade the site and studio automatically new services registered on this controller on site.

If you have more than one controller only and updated some of them, you must continue with the upgrade of the remaining controllers in the Metainstaller. In the example below, I have the controller and Studio component is installed on the second controller.

Save the services come next

Once the components have been updated on the remaining controllers, services on these controllers must be registered with the site so that the site services (eg logging services delegated administration and configuration) are working properly.

to register the new services on the controllers with the site, you can run the studio on one controller and navigate to the top node that highlights one or more controllers in the site must be registered with the upgraded site.

Click "Perform the recording." This displays the list of controllers that should be recorded.

Click OK to save all the controllers on the site.

Note that before this stage, studio on one of the controllers can already be used for all administrative tasks that will be using site services through the controller that was updated and registered with the site. the site seems to function normally, but does not work correctly in a failover. to ensure full capacity of the site and the availability, you must complete the above registration for the remaining controllers on your site

once the controllers are registered the site upgrade is now complete and all services on the remaining controllers must be running.

It is essential to record the remaining controllers

If you have more than one controller in the site, let's say you have upgraded and registered services on one of the controllers, and then all site operations will be running throughout the upgrade controller only. This means that if there is a hardware failure or network controller, your site will be in danger. Notice that the studio console on the second and third controller stops responding that these controllers are not yet properly registered with the site. At this stage, you will not even be able to save the controllers on the site that the registration process requires the Delegated Administration Service to be operational. This can potentially cause a shutdown or failure of the site until you can grab the controller properly updated.

If you have 4 or more controllers in the site and you choose to upgrade half of controllers, you may not experience this issue you have other controllers that have been updated and recorded on the site even if one of the upgrade controllers down. However, if all controllers that have been updated and stored on the site down for unforeseen reasons, you will experience failure mentioned above.

As such, Citrix strongly recommends following the upgrade process as mentioned in the updated guidance document and perform a health check after each step in the process for that there is minimal disruption during the upgrade

Mobile Data Usage Trends -

How long is the use of mobile data is actually growing (not just forecasts), and how is it different one once LTE networks are deployed? I thought I share some recently reported numbers of different operators all over the world (from the GSMA Wireless Intelligence database)

  • Mobistar in Belgium reported in July that data traffic mobile has tripled in the year ended June 2013.
  • Vodacom in South Africa said in July that customers use on average 75% more data per device for the quarter ended June 2013 there is year.

  • Japan reported that in August the smartphone by data traffic is approximately 30 times greater than that of a feature phone.
  • Cricket in the United States reported in August that the use of data for their LTE customers was about 2x that of 3G customers.
  • Idea Cellular in India reported in August that the growing volume of data has exploded at a rate of 92.2% per year.
  • AT & T Mobility in the United States reported in July that the use of the device by increased smartphone data annually by 50% in Q2 2013.
  • Zain South Sudan reported in June that the data traffic on the mobile broadband network increased by 176% per year by the end of Q1 2013.
  • Verizon in the United States reported in June that 59% of Wireless data traffic runs on Verizon's LTE network.
  • China Mobile reported in August 2013 that wireless data traffic increased 129% in 2013 Q2, over the same period last year.

PVS vs. MCS Revisited

PVS vs. MCS Revisited -

It has been a few months since my last article, but rest assured, I kept busy and I have a ton of things in my head that I ' m committed to get the paper in the near future. Why so busy? Well, our mobility products are keep busy fail. But I also spent the last month or the preparation of 2 different sessions at BriForum Chicago. My colleague, Dan Allen, and I co-presented on the topics of IOPS and Folder Redirection. Once Brian makes videos and bridges available online, I'll be sure to point people to them.

So that stuff I want to get on paper and turn into a future article? To name a few ... MCS vs. PVS (revisited), NUMA and XA VM sizing, XenMobile Lessons Learned "2.0", and Virtualization PVS Part 3. But let's talk about this first theme PVS vs MCS now.

Although BriForum (and Synergy) is always rush hour, I always try to catch some sessions by some of my favorite presenters. One of them is Jim Moyle and he actually inspired this article. If you do not know Jim, he is one of our CTPs and works for Atlantis Computing - he also wrote one of the most informative documents I have ever read IOPS. I swear there is not a month that goes by that I am not asked about PVS vs. MCS (pros and cons, what should I use, etc.). I will not go into the pros and cons or tell you what to use for a lot of people like Dan Feller did a good job of it already, even with beautiful trees making. I might note that Barry Schiffer decision tree updated you might want to check, too. But I will speak one of the main reasons that people often cite for not using MCS - it generates about " 1.6x or 60% more compared with PVS IOPS ". And since Ken Bell kind of "documented" that passing there are about 2-3 years, which is kind person and had gospel had challenged him. But our CSC team was to see slightly different results on the ground and Jim Moyle also decided to contest this statement. And Jim shared the results of its MCS against PVS tests at BriForum this year - I think a lot of people were shocked by the results

What were the results.? Here is a summary of things I thought were interesting:

  • MCS generates means 21.5% more IOPS compared to the PVS the state of balance (nowhere near 60%)
  • This amounts to about 8% more write IO and 13% more read IO
  • MCS generates 45.2% more peak IOPS relative to PVS (which is closer to the range of 50-60% we originally documented)
  • the writing to read (R / W) ratio for IO PVS was 0% + written in both steady state and peak (nothing new here)
  • R / W ratio to MCS peak was 47/53 (we have long said it is about 50/50 for MCS, so nothing new here)
  • R / W ratio to MCS in steady state was 17/83 (which was a bit of a surprise, a little as the first ball)

So how can it be?!?

I think it is essential to understand where our "1.5-1.6x" initial declaration or "50-60%" comes from - which takes into account not only the state of balance, but also boots and connection phases, which are mostly read IOPS and absolutely climb figures MCS. If you are not familiar with the R / W ratios typical for a Windows virtual machine during the various stages of its "life" (startup, logon, the equilibrium state of rest, disconnection, etc. .), then this image, courtesy of the VRC project, always does a good job explaining succinctly:

The R/W ratio of the boot phase is a lot different than the steady-state!

We also look IOPS peak and IOPS average in a single issue - we will provide two different numbers or break down like Jim and I did above in the results, and one IOPS numbers can be very misleading in itself. You do not believe me? Just check my BriForum presentation on IOPS and I'll show you some examples of how misleading statements like "1 million IOPS" can be

So there you have it - things are search for MCS. and actually, I think MCS kind of got a bad name early on and nobody ever bothered to consider the real-world data or re-test as Jim did. one point for the . PTC

does this mean that we should all start to leverage MCS not necessarily - we have thousands of customers using PVS in production capacity and I can not say the same for MCS right now. But it means that we should give another look MCS? Absolutely. especially as companies like MSFT and VMW build native support for reading cached in their hypervisors to manage IOPS read. .. because once we get rid of those extra read IOPS, we're just left with an almost negligible 8% more IOPS write in the steady state ... and that's when the simplicity of the MCS starts to look pretty attractive.

Hope this helps. Again, thank you to Jim Moyle for most of these data and to help me bust a longstanding myth!

Cheers, Nick

Benefits Citrix XenClient Series - Branch offices and distributed -

The second part of our series in 6 games on the benefits of Citrix XenClient - local VM option XenDesktop and FlexCast delivery technology - we explained how XenClient can be used to better manage PCs by converting them into virtual appliances . XenClient is a client virtualization solution ready production with thousands of workstations in deployment today. Our next installment in the series covers use XenClient to repurpose PCs as thin clients.

According CIO Survey 2012 by Gartner, the highest IT priorities for CIOs will reduce the cost of IT while at the same time as the development and management flexible infrastructure. Organizations can use desktop virtualization to allow passage of device management to deliver services to users, which is critical for IT in support branch and distributed offices.

local virtual desktops to remote sites

Although XenDesktop and networking products such as Citrix NetScaler Branch Repeater reduce investment and operating costs and simplify IT branch, Citrix provides another option to minimize traffic WAN and data center costs: local virtual desktops powered by XenClient

[

XenClient is a virtualization solution loan customer production with thousands of workstations in deployment today. XenClient is a part of XenDesktop and FlexCast delivery technology and is included at no additional charge when you buy the XenDesktop Enterprise or Platinum Edition licenses. local virtual desktops are ideal for branch offices and employees located around the world as they can safely operate off-grid and still leverage the centralized management and synchronization.

secure central management of the local virtual desktop
local virtual desktops are enabled using XenClient Engine, a type of hypervisor client 1, and managed centrally XenClient Synchronizer.

Taking advantage of the ability of Synchronizer remote desktop server XenClient can manage all remote servers from a central server. You can win many key benefits by using remote servers such as intelligent caching of downloaded images; efficient use of bandwidth between remote offices; local storage and maintenance of backups; and rapid recovery for remote clients. The remote server can be used in LAN or WAN configurations.

downloads from the central server is encrypted and compressed. As a user requests an updated image - or XenClient update engine - they ask from the remote server to which they are registered, the remote server then checks with the central server to start the download of the update . Once the update is downloaded to the remote server, then starts for the next user.

network factors

The network topology has a strong impact on the design of the facility Synchronizer. The following are the most important factors to consider:

  • Low speed (WAN) connections to remote sites . The XenClient system will perform at its best if Synchronizer remote servers are installed at the end of low speed links. In this way, the virtual machines are only downloaded once, no matter how many customers there at the remote site and no backups will be sent via the WAN connection. This results in a very low utilization of the WAN link. If it is impossible to install XenClient Synchronizer remote server at each remote location, it is always beneficial to install a remote server to serve a number of sites, as this will reduce the load on the connection outbound WAN to the central data center.
  • Several high speed segments . If the network has several high speed separate LAN segments, then it makes sense to install a Synchronizer remote server on each segment to maximize the number of customers that can be served simultaneously and to minimize the impact on the core network. For example, if a 10Gb backbone in the central data center and a series of 1Gb LAN segments distributed throughout the organization with small data centers each segment connected to the spine, a good strategy implementation would be to install remote servers in each center all satellite data connected to the backbone 10Gb and the central server in the primary data center. This will result in data being distributed to remote servers very quickly and from there delivered in parallel to all clients on different networks slower speed.

Virtual offices are a key tool to simplify PC remotely deployed infrastructure to streamline the rapid expansion, support offices and to attract and retain the best talent wherever they are . By deploying a combination of server hosted virtual desktops with Citrix XenDesktop and local virtual desktops powered by Citrix XenClient, IT can respond quickly to change, reduce IT budgets and improve user satisfaction.

Build your own VPN client with the shared library Access Gateway client API

Build your own VPN client with the shared library Access Gateway client API -

In an old blog article I explained the two interfaces of the plug-in NetScaler Access Gateway users different. As noted in this article already, my client was not satisfied with the look and feel of the software interface and asked for something more flexible and extensible (eg, running some programs depending on the tunnel being or not).

to answer this question and similar applications, Citrix Access Gateway provides a client API library shared for the integration of third party applications. The shared library is in the installation folder of the client (eg. C: Program Files Citrix Secure Access Client ). The name of the library file is C nscltapi.dll. It exports the following functions to be used in all three e party Code:

  • Log
  • Log out
  • connected
  • setproxy

This blog is not intended to cover all details on the API, but to give you an overview of how you can use it to create your own solution and / or what to ask Citrix Consulting for when the need arises. Using the code snippets below, adding a few extra lines of code to make it any prettier it took about 20 minutes to get something basic like this:

Example of basic Secure Access Client
Example Secure Access client base

below, examples are written in C # code. Described are the basic steps to introduce the exported functions of the Citrix API DLL to your project. After telling your unmanaged code environment will be used in the project through this instruction,

using System.Runtime.InteropServices;

, you can start importing the functions you need and use them later. In the following, the four functions and a quick example of how you can use will be documented. Do not follow best practices on how to import a DLL to your project I reference library full path instead to import the project. For your project, I suggest you do it early :-)

Function: login

This API function is exported for you connect to the NetScaler access gateway. He expects the following parameters:

  • FQDN
  • Username
  • Password

The shared library defines the function as follows:

int connect (char * url, char * user name, char * password)

the function returns an integer value indicating a positive tunnel initialization successful (the return value is also the identifier for your VPN session) or it returns a value <= 0. the relevant error codes are listed below

return value meaning
-1 invalid input parameters
-2 Agent is installed
-3 Agent could not be started
- 4 Port of undetected agent
-5, -6, -7 Sending connection to the agent failed
-8 agent modernizes
-9 The agent did not send reply connection valid
-10 memory allocation failure
-11 failed Direct connection because proxy requires credentials and credential prompting the client is disabled.

Example C #

[DllImport (“C:/Program Files/Citrix/Secure Access Client/nscltapi.dll”)]
private static extern int connection (String url, String username, String password );
int SessionID = login ( "https://myagee.example.com", "David", "Citrix123");

function: disconnect

This API function is exported to disconnect the SSL VPN. It expects the parameters

  • SessionID
  • Flag

where "SessionID" is the value returned by the connection API function and "Flag" sets the how the client will disconnect. The options are:

0: disconnection in silence, without early warning
2: .. exit without prompt
4 :. logout prompt with
6 :. output with prompt

shared library defines the function as follows:

int logout (int sessionid, int flag)

for successful disconnecting the disconnect function return 1 , in failure when disconnecting it reported 0 return to the calling context

Example C #

[DllImport (“C:/Program Files/Citrix/Secure Access Client/nscltapi.dll”)]
private static extern int logout (int SessionID, int flag) ;.
logout_flag int = 0;
= int logged_out logout (SessionID, logout_flag);

function: connected

This API function is exported to check the status of SSL VPN session. It has no parameters, but returns whether or not the plug-in Access Gateway is connected

The return values are expeted :.

0 :. Not connected to the SSL VPN
1: Connected. SSL VPN

shared library defines the function as follows:

int connected ()

Example C #

[DllImport (“C:/Program Files/Citrix/Secure Access Client/nscltapi.dll”)]
private static extern int connected ();
int status = connected ();

function: setproxy

The setproxy function is used to set the proxy statements for the VPN connection.

Forward proxy information live during the time of the shared library is loaded. If the shared library unloaded while the program is running, the proxy must be reset again.

He expects the

  • proxy address
  • dialogue Proxy
  • authentication method

library shared defines the function as follows:

setproxy int (char * proxy, proxydlg int, int prefermethod))

possible formats for the proxy address are:

  1. area
  2. ipaddress
  3. domain: port
  4. ipaddress: port
  5. area: Port: username: password
  6. ipaddress: port: username: [password

options for the proxy dialog box, which means to enable / disable SSL VPN Client dialog for the definition of proxy credentials before:

0: enable SSL VPN client prompt for credentials before proxy. (Default)
1 :. Disable SSL VPN client prompts for proxy credentials before

Possible methods for proxy authentication are:

0: Pick the first choice available from proxy Direct returned list. Default
1 :. preferred authentication method BASIC
2: preferred authentication method DIGEST
3: preferred method of authentication NTLM

The function returns "0" when the definition of forward proxy information failed. This usually occurs when the proxy string is longer than the maximum of 256 bytes. A value of 1 is returned when the forward proxy information is set successfully.

Example C #

[DllImport (“C:/Program Files/Citrix/Secure Access Client/nscltapi.dll”)]
private extern static int setproxy (String proxy_address, proxy_dialog int, int proxy_method);
int = proxy_defined setproxy ( "192.168.0.1:8080", 0, 0);

With these four functions of NetScaler Access Gateway client API is relatively easy to implement custom connection services for very specific use cases. If the description and the above examples are not a great help for you (despite my best intentions), but you need to implement a solution where this API can be useful, please contact Citrix Consulting for advice on how to use the library provided or course find other possible ways to accomplish your task.
