Citrix XenServer and XenDesktop platforms for CAD / CAE / PDM and AEC / PLM. GRID ™ presentation vGPU - True sharing GPU hardware -

For many traditional CAD, CAE and PLM industries with strict control of product cycle life such as automotive and Aerospace, virtualization has been approached with caution. CAD moves slowly and the cost of change is high and concerns about network speed, security and maturity of solutions meant much kept out, surveying the Cloud and Virtualization away, waiting to see if the benefits the outweigh the risks.

This week, with an overview of GPU technology for sharing VDI hardware; Citrix and NVIDIA introduced another piece in what is now a very compelling portfolio which provides all the elements needed to virtualize CAD and PLM widely. Citrix XenServer and XenDesktop really became CAD and PLM natural platform

vGPU -. True sharing GPU hardware

In addition to Citrix passthrough GPU and GPU hardware sharing for existing Windows Server workloads, this new technology allows the benefits of GPU acceleration to operate at lower cost. Passthrough GPU has been used for some time, which allows designers such as Boeing to work using applications such as Dassault CATIA remotely. Our existing software GPU sharing technologies have proven to be very in providing graphically intensive applications such as Dassault SolidWorks, Ansys Workbench and Application Fluent and Autodesk. By offering the full range of real passthrough GPU and GPU shared equipment vGPU via the Citrix portfolio offers the greatest possible flexibility organizations to optimize their use of GPU technology. Mayunk detailed the options available and I recommend his blog and guides to explore options.

We work not only with NVIDIA on their new card GRID, but also the major server vendors such as HP, Dell, Cisco, IBM and Supermicro to ensure these technologies are refined for the XenServer hypervisor to optimize performance of NVIDIA GPUs. HP have produced an insightful guide on the benefits of vGPU compared to other technologies.

Those working in CAD know that for every designer to design who live there are 100s of users of PDM and PLM such as Siemens PLM Teamcenter or ENOVIA from Dassault - viewing that live, follow the BoM (Bill of Materials) etc. GPU virtualization provides the ability to make practical and cost effective for these workers to work more effectively with high-sensitive definition applications

XenDesktop

Citrix XenDesktop allows you to deliver desktops and applications for employees freeing them from traditional desktops. XenDesktop enables you to standardize the center, upgrade and safeguard these jobs. In industries that handle a lot of data to proprietary models and 3-D, this means that you can ensure backups and anti-virus are carried through the entire company. The data is securely stored in a secure data center and in the case of a disaster like the Japanese tsunami or floods Colarado workers can regain access to this stored data quickly and easily.

parts Centralize and monitoring becomes easier to ensure duplication or forked development does not occur, the confidential data is protected because it has not been downloaded to a thousand jobs by CAD designers.

Netscaler and CloudBridge Branch Repeater

Citrix does not just server virtualization, but is the leader in infrastructure networking technologies required to enable virtualization at scale. Products such as Netscaler increase performance while reducing and balancing network load to reduce costs and reduce latency. This is essential to ensure responsiveness to designers and knowledge workers handling 3-D visual or highly remote.

Citrix NetScaler SDX is running XenServer ensure consistency through a virtualization deployment, allowing flexibility and applications to run on the NetScaler. For some years the energy group and ABB automation technology makes users' desktops with applications distributed worldwide CAD available as XenDesktop virtual desktops through leveraging CloudBridge Branch Repeater to remove latency obstacles to provide applications such as Siemens SolidEdge engineers in India without the models leaving the data center in Switzerland. With the Citrix portfolio NVIDIA GPU technologies these workstations can now go turbo!

Citrix GoToMeeting

CAD / CAE and PLM are all about design and collaboration, recently, DesignNews the CAD industry GoToMeeting listed as one of the 4 best tools for designer productivity. Solidworks have already deployed Citrix GoToMeeting with their own R & D team and other company employees. Dassault allow employees to share and remotely debug projects with these vital and sensitive visual piece without data leaving the datacenter.

Citrix Receiver

Citrix is the company mobility of virtualization. We do not do server virtualization, but the whole stack of mobility solutions that enable you to deliver visualization to any device anywhere. The key to delivering this Citrix Receiver is a software client that allows you to access your applications, desktops and data easily and securely from any device, including smartphones, tablets, PCs and Macs. Under the hood receiver has phenomenal compression techniques to support the kind of high quality, high definition, sensible experience as CAD and CAE designers need and are accustomed.

This is exciting because it means rather than being tied to their CAD workstation users can take the data and work in new ways, an engineer may refer to parts of a tablet (with eg iPad) down on the production line. Shipbuilders on the site may refer to extensive plans and return connections in the data center on a mobile phone.

ShareFile

Citrix provides secure file and data sharing for those who want file sharing at enterprise level and want to avoid insecurity options such as Dropbox. Citrix ShareFile is a solution Follow Me business data that enables it to deliver a data sharing and synchronization of robust service that addresses the needs of mobility and collaboration of users and security requirements of data encountered by the most CAD users. No more coins by email or lost memory sticks!

Experience in large scale deployments

Citrix has a wealth of experience in large enterprise deployments to large scale, but also in the cloud. Industries such as automotive, automation, aerospace and shipbuilding include large organizations and multiple geographic sites with full complex and diverse servers, processes and legacy baggage.
XenServer is a commercial product based on open source Xen hypervisor that powers the Amazon EC2 Cloud, with the associated scalability. Rackspace use XenServer to deploy one of the largest clouds in the world. In the experience of the company XenServer Virtualization with large organizations such as Tesco, SK Telecom and Disney mean that we truly understand the challenges of scale as CAD, CAE and PLM face.

Security, Virtualization

Virtualization offers tremendous benefits for the protection and data security. As a XenServer hypervisor has worked with Intel to ensure we integrate with their new secure boot technology and Intel TXT secure boot full support is already available. XenDesktop allows administrators to backup and anti-virus software is centrally controlled, updated and orchestrated to minimize network load. XenServer also has a long history in the US government and federal deployments.

Virtualization should not mean public cloud, but it may if appropriate to reduce costs. In practice, we expect to see a mixture of private and secure enterprise server virtualization and private cloud for increased flexibility and public cloud services can offer.

Virtualization addresses the constraints inherited

XenServer is a hypervisor acts as a layer that abstracts the user's operating system and the physical hardware it runs. This means that you can run multiple operating systems, Linux and Windows on the same hardware, XenServer Virtual Machine Guide details the many supported operating systems. This is perfect for CAD and PLM where version-up tests and regression tests perform millions of tests. This also allows industries with long support cycles to maintain the existing operating systems and software.

Software vendors are convinced

CAD, CAE and PLM vendors also seem convinced that virtualization is now inevitable, with the familiar names that invest heavily in virtualization and GPU enablement, alongside a clutch of hotshots

  • CAE vendors such as Ansys invest in GPU. enablement; the use of the GPU can reduce the simulation cycle down from days to hours
  • Ciespace is one of a number of clouds CAE platforms to emulate phenomenally successful CAD platform cloud GrabCAD
  • SolidEdge recently changed their license for a friendly SaaS cloud model and facilitated direct publication GrabCAD
  • AutoDesk is a Citrix key partner that is making waves with their Autodesk 360 cloud
  • PTC Creo have virtualized, together with an alliance of IBM, NVIDIA and Citrix XenServer they deliver reference architectures for the next generation of delivering CAD

@XDtipster - Creating Policies HDX With POSH -

Hi everyone, as promised last week on @xdtipster twitter feed, here is the detailed blog on how to create conditions of the HDX by POSH [

I guess the first thing to note is that Citrix HDX policies can be managed in both POSH XD5.x and XD7.x. What makes this possible is the Citrix Group Policy POSH supplier that was introduced in XD5.

By default, once the Citrix snap-ins are loaded ( citrix ASNPs * ) you will be able to see that provider and readers associated using Get-PSProvider

Click on screenshot to see the picture

Note that by default, you will policy POSH access to both Citrix Drives Group:

1.LocalGPO (refers to the local GPO)

2.Templates (refers to the Templates tab under the policy node Citrix studio - applicible to XD7.x only btw)

Running Get-PSDrive will return a little more information on the drives themselves. ..

Click on screenshot to see the picture

to access one of these default records all what you have to do is change directory in the drive itself, for example, CD Models:

once at the root of the drive, you can then view the existing data structure, edit existing objects or create new objects, but more about that later ...

I was looking at this over the last week and the first question I am asked when looking at available POSH Drives via the Citrix group policy provider was "Why not mount the DomainGPO object or object policies in the default DB? "For me, they are two of the most useful to the right card discs. To be honest, I actually wondered if they were still available to ride at all ...

Well, after a bit of trial and error, I thought that they can in fact be mounted and that the're is actually a very good reason for not mounted by default. It turns out that it is for reasons scalabilty in heavy scripting environments where delays may be encountered connect to AD and or controller.

So how do we create a new POSH drive and mount either the DomainGPO or political DB object? Creation POSH of a new drive is the easy part, because of course there are many instructions and online help file for new PSDrive steps through the process very clearly. the hardest part is to determine exactly what settings to use to mount the above mentioned items.

This was a little difficult, but during my investigations I found that once inside one of the Citrix Group Policy drives I could run newborn PSDrive Help -Full command and show me exactly how to create a new PSDrive using Citrix items available:

Click on screenshot to view full image

As you can see, based on the output of the aid, the list of available objects (data structures) for mounting on a drive include:

1.DomainGPO

2.LocalGPO

3.Controller (policy object DB Site)

4.Templates (HDX Poliocy object Model)

notes : the FarmGPO option is invalid (valid option only for legacy XenApp)

as an example, you can use the following command to create a new drive POSH called XDPOL that points to a controller and turn the political object in DB:

New PSDrive -Name XDPOL -PSProvider CitrixGroupPolicy -Root - Controller DC1

Click on screenshot to see the picture

to display the stored existing data in the new PSDrive track cd xdpol: and press the return and use the dir and cd ordered to take to the data structure:

Click on screenshot to see the picture

here you can create your site policies POSH by using a combination of different ie controls cd dir New- Point Set-ItemProperty ...

Example

step 1: Create a new GPO using New-item -Name (why not XDTipster ...)

Click on screenshot to see the picture

Step 2: Enable access to local App by using the Set-ItemProperty cmdlet with path, name and value of the parameters as shown below:

Click on screenshot to see the picture

Step 3: Refresh Citrix studio to view the site HDX newly created policy based:

Click on screenshot to see the picture

Reference:

to create a new POSH drive and mount the DomainGPO object to manage AD HDX policies based POSH by running the following command:

New PSDrive -Name XDGPO -PSProvider CitrixGroupPolicy -Root -DomainGPO

Part 4:!? What XenApp

In my last post, I discuss general recommendations for a WAN deployment of XenDesktop 5.6, XenApp but what?

In this post I will compare the bandwidth requirements between XenApp and XenDesktop and XenApp can show how to have a role in the planning of an extensive network. Tests were performed using XenDesktop 5.6 FP1 FP1 and XenApp 6.5.

XenApp or XenDesktop Hosted Shared Desktop

I started repeating some of the tests described above performed on Windows 7, but this time on Server 08 R2. Again, there were three configurations; . Listed below

  1. OOBE : A default "out of the box" configuration
  2. Office Style A configuration as close to that of the default configuration previously tested for XenDesktop on Windows 7
  3. Max Optimized such a configuration similar to that of "Pushing the Limit" previously tested configuration for XenDesktop on Windows 7

Note: There is no guarantee that the 08 R2 configurations are identical to those of Windows 7 since the operating systems are different.

These configurations were tested with the same tests described in post 2. The results are summarized in the tables below and as you can see again, the bandwidth can be significantly reduced with optimizations and policies. Interestingly, the office-style configuration has not added significant bandwidth compared to the default configuration, although no policies have been set for one of the configurations. When you turn off all visual parameters and reducing frames per second (FPS) bandwidth has decreased significantly.

Comparing XenDesktop and XenApp desktops, I decided to focus on the more restrictive than the configuration that would be of interest when bandwidth is biggest problem. In doing so, I have found mixed results. 1.536Mbps on a network, XenApp presented as low as 14kbps bandwidth for Microsoft Excel and Word, less than about 20kbps to see XenDesktop. Note that the user experience in both cases were similar for XenApp and XenDesktop. When looking PowerPoint and Adobe, however, the bandwidth was slightly higher proving once again that you should test, test, test before production. Where XenApp can really play a role in a WAN deployment is only when applications are needed and are discussed below.

Post what you need

What if users do not require a complete desktop? In some cases, a single application is necessary at a remote location with extreme grid conditions. If so, simply provide what is needed. By accessing an application directly, there is no effect in terms of bandwidth when reducing or dragging the window. This reduces the amount of required screen updates that may lead to the use of lower bandwidth. Moreover, now that the whole office is not delivered, all the visual effects can be disabled without affecting the user experience (think of Max Optimized configuration discussed in the second post in the series). To illustrate this consider the images below.

The first image is a hosted shared desktop delivered by XenApp 6.5 FP1. To conserve bandwidth Max Optimized configuration was used, as seen by the lack of screen background and the classic taskbar. As mentioned earlier in this series, users expect a rich, classic look that experience should be considered in the most extreme network conditions. A user can connect to this computer to edit documents on Microsoft Word and Excel and can be disappointed by the basic appearance. Since nobody wants the disappointed users, I present an alternative.

In the second image, the same applications that were opened on-demand applications. Again Max Optimized configuration was used, but this time the applications were launched and the user can use his local office. This can help reduce bandwidth further by eliminating most of the other tasks that the user can perform within the virtualized infrastructure because they are no longer available. The model applications FlexCast demand is not always practical depending on the situation, but it is a great option for users with limited network conditions and a small number of active applications.

As always, this scenario has been tested to confirm the use of bandwidth. See the results summarized below for a 1.536Mbps network. the differences were minimal bandwidth between the published desktops and applications on demand (MS Word was less than a difference of 1kbps!) the same workloads were tested for comparison.

The results are also very similar because workloads Login VSI had no interaction with the desktop. The user, however, as mentioned above, would have a different experience in both scenarios. In the case of the published desktop, the user would see a bare office. For seamless applications, the user would see his personal office with all the customizations are in effect. All this is achieved with the same bandwidth requirement for the application without additional bandwidth to interact with the desktop.

Now you may be thinking, "wait my application is not compatible with XenApp for reason XYZ". In this case, I present two additional options. You can either Citrix AppDNA application management software leverage to help test and sanitation compatibility problems, or you can use the VM Hosted Apps feature of XenDesktop.

Next Time

In the next post, I will share specific policy settings and registry to get you started with optimizing your own environment WAN.

XenApp Scalability v2013 - Part 1

XenApp Scalability v2013 - Part 1 -

Overview

NOTE: Part 2 of this Article is available here.

similar to what I did on my farm and design section area, I thought it was time to take a look "fresh" XenApp scalability and user density (hence " Version 2013 "). Because a lot of best practices in this area have changed as we have made some dramatic physical improvements and progress of the hypervisor in the last 2-3 years or more, in particular. And after all, one of the main questions I ask myself again is "How many users can I get on a box?". Well, I had one only 10 years ago when I started ... so I had another answer there about 3 years ... now I have another answer as we approach the year 2014. Much has changed over the last decade, but I think in this area XA scalability particularly as perhaps changed in recent years we have introduced things like NUMA and re-writing hypervisor CPU schedulers. Before we dive in, if you have not read the 3 part series of Andy Baker on Hosted Shared Desktop Scalability, I suggest you do - it's really great and I want to show how well things have changed over the last year since he wrote those articles. And if you have not read the white papers VRC project, particularly "Phase 2" where they looked XA scalability on three major hypervisors in 2010, I suggest you do - very informative and I will review this has changed since they conducted such testing

Results

I decided to make this article a little differently -. I'll give you the "Results" or "key findings" in part 1 first ... then explain how we arrived at these results and some concepts like NUMA and CPU Over-subscription in Part 2 (now Published !). I recently conducted a XenApp pretty intense scalability testing at a customer and some of these results are of this commitment (I also added a couple more that I can speak to one or two other things in this article). Without further ado:

The following conclusions were drawn XenApp scalability tests conducted for ABC Company:

  • 130 users per physical host; CPU-bound workloads. Exactly 130 users or XenApp sessions were run with an acceptable user experience on each physical host with the default or workload "Medium" Login VSI using a single material of ABC. This is slightly lower than originally planned, but after a new investigation into the new default workload used by Login VSI 4.0.x, it is expected due to the high participation rate and intensity workload. The workload has also been linked to the processor as expected and as is typical of the XA workloads running on 64-bit operating systems.
  • 4 vCPU VM specification Resulted in Optimal Density of the user. Citrix and ABC company tested various configurations with 2 vCPUs, 4 vCPUs and even 8 vCPUs to determine the optimal allocation of resources for intensive VM workload of the processor on the material chosen by ABC. It was determined that the specification 4 vCPU VM resulted in the highest density of the user, while providing a good user experience. Citrix believes this is due to the underlying architecture NUMA in the Intel chipset that was used in the test -. Each plug (with 8 cores) is divided into two NUMA nodes, each with 4 cores
  • CPU Modest over-subscription Resulted in optimal user density while maintaining a good user experience. Citrix also tested different levels of CPU subscription, ie 1: 1, 1.5: 1 and 2: 1. It was determined that a modest level of CPU subscription (1.5: 1) resulted in the highest density of the user, while providing a good user experience. This can be largely attributed to Hyper-Threading is enabled, which typically provides performance gains ranging from 20-30%.
  • The small performance benefits of Hyper-Threading because of the high activity ratio. The performance gains thanks to Hyper-Threading were relatively low (~ 10%) in the environment of ABC compared to other clients and industry standards (~ 20-30%) . After further investigation of the default workload Login VSI has set up, it seems that the "progress report" (the amount of active treatment versus time of rest) is very high - on the order of ~ 85%. In most Citrix XenApp environments Consulting has seen the participation rate is closer to 50-60% in practice. Citrix believes that this high rate of activity negatively affects Hyper-Threading performance on a workload already bound CPU. If ABC decides, the script Login VSI can be modified to include more time for rest or sleep and test 4 vCPUs can be re-executed to probably achieve higher user density and performance advantages Hyper-Threading technology.

Very interesting, huh? Now let's talk about some results. But first, let me give you some information about what hardware and software we used in these tests our consulting team led to that particular client.

Test Overview

We used a hardware specification that is quite popular at the moment (and also a very good " sweet spot "for XA workloads in terms of CPU and RAM I might add ...) - Dell R810 is with 2 sockets (8 cores each) and 128 GB of RAM. We used Intel chips and Hyper-Threading was enabled in all tests. We were using XenApp 6.5 on 08 R2 (both fully patched) and 4.1 for vSphere Hypervisor (fully patched at that level - I think "Update 3a"). We used Login VSI 4.0.x as load testing tool to perform all tests - we customize the workload, we only used the default "Medium" workload is essentially a desktop user quite heavy (later). We followed everything and then all watched some more. We examined a variety of different specifications VM (2 vCPUs vs 4 vs 8 vCPUs vCPUs) and CPU ratios on subscription (using only physical cores, using all virtual processors, and using somewhere between). We measured the user experience in a variety of ways with the Login VSI Analyzer. The results confirmed a lot of things we preach team Consulting these days and also seeing in the area:

  • Hyper-Threading still provides performance gains - you should allow him 99.9% of the time when virtualizing XA.
  • you should not just use physical cores when sizing the XA workload, but you should not use all logical / virtual cores when sizing is.
  • You should definitely consider using 4, 6 or 8 vCPUs for your XA spec VM instead of 2 vCPUs.
  • Users effectively "work" unless you think - Progress reports should reflect the way users work and interact with applications in the real world

in the next article, we'll really dig into these results and talk. things like how NUMA affects VM specifications, pCPUs vs. vCPUs, why we did not have 192 users per box as we did a year ago on the same hardware, and more. Stay tuned and I will update this article with the link to "Part 2" when it is published.

That document includes the IBM PureFlex solution announced for office SmartCloud infrastructure -. Offers a pre-configured, integrated VDI optimized for VDI deployments and available with both the IBM Flex System x222 ™ based on Intel CPU and Flex System x240 compute nodes

Before entering the numbers let me quickly remind you that the IBM x222 FlexSystem is and what is unique in the industry.

"the x222 Compute Node Flex System is optimized for desktop virtualization and was created to meet the demand for greater computing capacity within an existing physical footprint. The density of a IBM system standard Flex node is doubled, providing two twin knots by standard calculation bay in the IBM system Enterprise Flex chassis for the equivalent of up to 28 nodes per chassis. the x222 Flex system uses two Intel Xeon processors and up 384 GB of memory per dual compute node and can support up to twice the number of processors compared to the traditional approach in the same rack space. "

As pointed out in my previous blog, and documented by IBM in Citrix XenDesktop reference architecture, a single IBM Blade x222 can support 152 simultaneous VDI users, all running simultaneously VSI Medium worker Task while running XenDesktop 5.6, while providing a solid user experience.

This is equivalent to 4256 Medium task workers supported within a single blade chassis.

This kind of density equals a lot of potential savings for our customers in both infrastructure costs (fewer things to buy), space (less footprint data center), heat / cooling / electricity (save money and help the environment), and even the complexity of the configuration and build on.

It really is an astonishing number, and has many power packed into a small footprint.

However, with the XenDesktop 7 and using the Hosted shared desktop configuration ... the density results IBM reported this time ... are simply amazing.

As shown in the table below (taken from page 13 of the IBM document). Using 2xE5-2470 2.3 GHz processors, IBM was able to support 206 users on one twin servers in an IBM blade x222. (Note: It is running exactly the same average simulated workload task as described above.)

The workload

VM OS

# VM

maximum users

Windows Server 08 R2

4

206

Medium

Windows server 08 R2

6

206

Medium

Windows Server 08 R2

So ... we'll work this math out ...

206 workers on 1/2 of the blade x222 = 412 users on maximum x222 blade!

And as you can fit in a chassis 14x Blades ...

This is 5768 medium tasks of workers

read any email joyfully surf the web, watch videos and building presentations ... and all accessible from a single blade chassis.

(Again this number does not include reductions to planning disaster recovery, so your mileage may vary. But the IBM document provides solid advice for calculation and planning for your DA needs.)

Furthermore, in the presentation of different configurations and scalability of their results, IBM has also provided our customers the opportunity to choose configuration that is best for you. For various reasons, including the licensing of Windows virtual machines, some of you may opt for a VM configuration 4x instead of 8x VM configuration. And through information and details provided, you can make decisions based on numbers and compromise the real world.

There is much more information, guidance, and the tests provided for within the document and IBM as well as capabilities in the solutions they describe. This blog just highlighted one of the many reasons why you need to spend some time investigating these solutions for yourself.

Guide to the App-V deployment 5 of 7 XenDesktop and XenApp 6.5 -

This white paper focuses on using App-V 5 7 with XenDesktop and XenApp 6.5. Although we integrate within XenDesktop 7 for the publication and launch of the App-V 5 applications, I had many questions about the release of App-V 5 on XenApp 6.5. So, working with Microsoft, we have created this white paper that answers many common questions such as:

1- When is best to use the content store shared mode
2 - The compromise whether you pre-cache? App-V 5 packs in gold image or not
3- How to publish App-V 5 packets in XenApp 6.5 (and a PowerShell script to help identify the names of applications and command lines)

white paper covers details on the best way to configure App-V 5 for a given deployment approach, considerations when using provisioning technologies with App-V and methods to improve performance launch time.

Create a private key and CSR for XDM

Create a private key and CSR for XDM -

Recently, I was part of a discussion on the creation of a private key and a certificate signing request (CSR) to obtain a third-party certificate for Manager XenMobile devices (XDM). These are not covered in the documentation. There are quite a few different ways this can be done and I wanted to list a few.

1) Use an IIS box. Most are familiar with this process and it is fairly simple to make. Once the certificate is obtained and added to IIS, it can be exported with.

2) If a NetScaler is part of the environment of use. Both the key and CSR can be generated on the NetScaler. Once the certificate is added, you can export the keystore.

3) Download OpenSSL for Windows on the XDM server. The key and CSR can then be generated on the XDM server itself. This can help ensure the key seat elsewhere in the network.

So there are three ways to generate the key and XDM Private CSR to obtain a third party SSL certificate. Options 1 and 3 will probably be covered by your certificate provider. All restrictions on the size or key algorithms should be provided by your SSL certificate provider. The XDM keystore file must be in PKCS12 format

Generating OpenSSL key -. Http://www.openssl.org/docs/HOWTO/keys.txt

Generating a CSR OpenSSL - http://www.openssl.org/docs/HOWTO/certificates.txt

Change the XDM server cert - http://support.citrix.com/proddocs/ topic / xmob-dm-85 / xmob-dm-manage-securityId-configcert-ssl-tsk.html

UPDATE: I have documented this process for one of my clients in their building Nike guide and thought I would add here.

1) Download OpenSSL for Windows. http://www.openssl.org/related/binaries.html You may also need Visual C ++ 08 redistributable

2) Make sure to follow all applicable directives in your environment during the the addition of these components.

3) Open a command prompt on the XDM server. All orders by assuming that you are in the c :. Win32 OpenSSL bin

4) Generate a new private key. Make sure to use the size of the key needed for your environment. This example uses a 2048 bits key.

i. "openssl genrsa -des3 -out 2048"

5) Generate CSR. You will get a warning about not find openssl.cfg, even when specifying the configuration in the order.

i. "openssl req -new -key -out -config. Openssl.cfg"

6) Submit the CSR to the CA to sign the certificate and place in c :. Win32 OpenSSL bin with

7) Create a PKCS # 12 bundle file. Be sure to protect the beam password when creating.

i. "openssl pkcs12 -export -in -inkey -out "

8) Create a folder on the XDM server to hold the beam, for example C .. XDMCert

9) If desired, remove the key, CSR and regroup from the OpenSSL bin directory and remove

vGPU - SAP 3D Visual Enterprise - the potential of mobile CAD / PLM - XenDesktop on XenServer powered by NVIDIA GRID -

Yesterday I read on another fascinating implementation on vGPU Citrix XenServer in XenDesktop, written by my colleague Roland more about SAP blogs. In recent weeks, I have written a few blogs on the potential of these technologies for CAD applications / PLM CAE / AEC and also.

This particular implementation was exactly the implementation type of the company I was hoping to see. SAP long term Citrix partner with a long history of certification on XenServer, really understand the large-scale enterprise deployments and moves more and more 3-D parts management, PDM and PLM. This is particularly interesting given their long history in all areas of virtualization, including cloud and VDI.

Roland blog details a demo at SAP TechEd US in 2013 showing a real live demonstration of SAP 3D Visual Enterprise powered by Citrix XenDesktop and NVIDIA. In particular, I am particularly interested in the extent of 3D parts in the demo, but also the variety of mobile devices (tables, laptops, smart phones) used, I really recommend you read the full blog, but important to me was

"SAP VE team provided a couple of demo scenarios, the one you can see here is a CAD model of an oil platform with over 40 million summits; not bad at all to be able to run smoothly on the WAN (for network of experts: the average latency was 0ms) "

more and more. users attempt technologies vGPU and reports excellent results. Why not give it a go

NYS HCR gives thanks for access to the secure application Citrix -

New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) provides affordable housing to voters across the state. Citrix helps understand its mission to provide the most complete solution to meet the needs of UNHCR. UNHCR is composed of several renewal agencies who understand finance and development, preservation of housing and community renewal. To serve these constituents more effectively, it must be able to rationalize resources more efficiently. The consolidation of information technology resources between agencies can provide administration and centralized governance while offering the best consolidated cost, fast return on investment and an agile infrastructure to adjust to the technological needs of the agency.

What technology foundation does UNHCR needs To achieve these goals? Regarding the provision of information technology services to a distributed workforce, it is all about the application. UNHCR uses Citrix to provide secure access solution for employees to applications to ensure that those who work in an office or in the field can access critical applications on any device, anywhere, anytime. They also have robust features such as single-instance management and the ability to once daily application compared to using a business management solution for endpoint that must touch each device. This simplifies the process for updates of applications and security patches, providing a significant advantage by reducing administration costs.

Citrix XenApp is the basis that enables this feature and when paired with Citrix NetScaler together creates the most comprehensive and secure remote access solution for accessing applications. So how are they doing? Conceptually examine how XenApp can be used to ensure safe application access:

In this configuration, both the NetScaler Gateway and the Web Interface server are deployed the DMZ. NetScaler is deployed to the Web Interface server to ensure all external connections go through NetScaler Gateway. The user's initial login will NetScaler gateway and is then redirected to the Web Interface server for authentication. Web Interface then interacts with the Secure Ticket Authority to provide user access to a published resource. To add an extra layer of security, Web Interface can be deployed in the internal network. In this scenario, NetScaler bridge would handle all authentication requests and then forward the request to the Web interface. Web Interface interacts with the Secure Ticket Authority and generates an ICA file to ensure that ICA traffic is routed via NetScaler Gateway to farm.

Not only may Citrix provide a robust solution for accessing applications, but we also provide the safest solution to protect constituent data. Since the application data never leaves the data center, government compliance is ensured while offering the flexibility to access the application from any device, anywhere, anytime.

In state and local government agencies, budget and cost control, security, shared services and consolidation and optimization were among the top ten priorities for CIOs of Citrix allows government in 2013. New York UNHCR to align with the state of IOC objectives and still provide constituent services in the most efficient manner possible.

New in VDI-in-a-Box 5.4: Built-in HTML5 Receiver -

Schools and other organizations have struggled with the cost and complexity of the implementation of virtual office solutions. One source of these costs and management complexity is the access device used to connect a user to their virtual desktop. The introduction of the Google Chromebook line of products has to meet both the complexity and cost of management.

Google Chromebooks are designed to provide affordable computers that rely on a built-in browser to access applications and data in the cloud. Administration IT perspective, Chromebooks are the ideal access device because there is no local government required the operating system contains a built-in browser, and a minimal amount of malware targeting the Chrome operating system reduces the need for security updates and anti-virus software.

In the past year, the adoption of Chromebooks has increased significantly. In an effort to keep the growing adaptation rate of this technology, Citrix created the HTM5 receiver for Chromebooks and HTML5 enabled browsers to connect to desktops and applications without having to install a native client Citrix.

With VDI-in-a-Box 5.4, we built HTML5 receiver in the device VDI-in-a-Box. The receiver is a part of every 5.4 deployment and there is no need to deploy Storefront to take advantage of the easy access that provides HTML5 receiver.

Receiver Adding HTML5 VDI-in-a-Box offers a genuine experience out-of-the-box, as it allows users to access their Chromebooks desktops and applications directly through their browser Web (Office in a browser). Students can bring their Chromebooks and have access to their desktop VDI-in-a-Box. Administrators can also deploy Chromebooks affordable and manageable for teachers and students as access devices.

When a user connects with a Chromebook page VDI-in-a-Box login, he or she will automatically connect to the HTML5 receptor site and the office will launch in a browser window.

VDI-in-a-Box can detect if the access device needs the HTML5 receiver to connect seamlessly and direct the user there. Users with access devices already have a Citrix client installed can browse to https :. // GridIPAddress / html5 if they wish to use

fresh start with XenDesktop Local Fashion

fresh start with XenDesktop Local Fashion -

As we approach the end of the year, it made me think, sometimes a fresh start is good. With the end of Windows XP approach, perhaps it would be a good time to consider migration options. XenDesktop local mode, which comprises 5 XenClient Enterprise is a solution that opens up a new paradigm on how to manage the end devices.

New to XenClient? Look at the XenClient Enterprise 5 video to see how this pillar core XenDesktop enables centralized management and secure company laptops and PCs - while delivering unprecedented customization capabilities to end users. You can also view a recent post where I highlight a key feature introduced: vDisk (PVD) personal technology. I explain the power of this feature later in another blog, focusing on key, the Synchronizer.

We all live by the mantra of "if is not broke, do not fix it!" But at some point we will have to solve the problem and switch to Windows 7 or to give your users a shudder the surprise with Windows 8.1. change is hard and while we all hate, sometimes it must be done! Why not transitioning to Windows 7, XenClient slipstream into the mix and enhance the experience of migration. XenClient provides a few options to help with your migration and possibly to the adoption of a new operating system (AKA change) to the end user a little more bearable

Here's what we recommend:

the end is near:
what about the imminent end of XP the good news is you can run XP on XenClient Enterprise This is great because? if you have a pesky app that only works on XP, you can still provide an environment until you can fully migrate this application to a newer version of Windows. Once the migrated application, with a simple Synchronizer unassignment in XC, XP may be gone forever

Dual Boot Option:
There is an option to dual boot a system, which is a great way to keep intact a system and run XenClient Enterprise when migrating slowly your XenClient full-time user. On pages 9-15 of the XenClient Enterprise Engine Installation Guide we explain how to dual boot between XenClient and a local operating system. I suggest this option for the user who is restless for change (are not we all?) Because it offers relief in XenClient

Migration of user data.
The other alternative is to ensure that user data is backed up and migrated. Fortunately Citrix ShareFile for it and if the user settings are a concern, consult our tool management profile. This will allow the collection of important data of the user, but allow a fresh start with Windows 7 or even Windows 8. and the good news is ShareFile runs on Windows XP. At the end of the day, users just want to have a working system with their data intact.

Maybe it's just my old brain IT speak, but I just like to make a new start! Consider a different approach when planning your migration from Windows XP by downloading XenClient Enterprise 5 and try for free for up to 10 devices.

And a service provider that seeks to build a complete multi-tenant, scalable and automated platform Daas can not live without App Orchestration. Just like how you would not imagine building an Amazon-style cloud infrastructure or Azure without using something like CloudStack, you can not imagine building a DaaS cloudless App Orchestration. Here are some of the highlights of the latest version and check our DaaS page for more details on this technology.

  • In addition to XenApp 6.5, App Orchestration now deploys and manages applications and desktops from our last XenDesktop 7.1
  • StoreFront orchestration and automation is now built for help manage applications tenants stores

New in VDI-in-a-Box 5.4: Session Shadowing with Microsoft Remote Assist -

A problem many administrators face is the support of their end users. The trouble tickets are inexperienced users via email or phone and administrators must rely on the user to describe their problem. If only administrators had some way to see what their users see, it would greatly speed the diagnosis and resolution. The answer to this problem is the observation session with Windows Remote Assistance, which was added to the administrator console in VDI-in-a-Box 5.4.

VDI-in-a-Box 5.4 allows administrators to establish Microsoft remote support sessions for Windows 7 workstations and more, directly from the VDI Management Console based on the web. This allows administrators to shadow users seamlessly into the single pane of glass that is the VDI-in-a-Box Management Console. Session Shadowing is enabled by default and there is no need to manually configure this feature. Enabling Windows Remote Assistance and open the appropriate port in the Windows Firewall is done automatically when installing Desktop Agent.

Administrators and Helpdesk staff can now use the session shadowing feature to quickly connect and troubleshoot VDI-in-a-Box remote user sessions. All features of Microsoft Remote Assistance is available with VDI-in-a-Box, including the ability to view the user session, discuss with the user, and even ask the keyboard control / mouse of the session 'user.

Using shadowing session must be approved by the end user every time a remote control Assist is launched and must also approve each control keyboard / mouse time is needed. This means that end users can be assured that the administrator can not connect to or control user sessions without the knowledge and approval of the user. In addition to the approval of the user, each session is password protected and encrypted.

For more information on using session shadowing, please see this eDoc: http://support.citrix.com/proddocs/topic/vdi-54/vdi-manage-user-sessions.html

XenClient Enterprise: The default Windows drive letters -

With the maintenance release of XenClient Enterprise 5.0.4 I thought it apropos to take this opportunity, sit down and have a conversation with you, our customers, the community and fellow Citrites!

This post not intended to highlight the new features, improvements and corrections, but to have a discussion on a topic that I supported and saw bubbling in our discussion forums. (If you're not a member in it, I urge you to join: sign up, no spam, learn something new and to raise issues in a diverse community)

the agenda I refer to is the num- because of this post, but here it is in question format "Alex":

"How can I change? Windows drive letters of default in XCE "

the direct answer to answer is very carefully . The purpose of this question - any director need to change the default drive letters used by XenClient Enterprise - is understandable. Organizations any size usually have a "Dedicated Windows CIFS / File Sharing". You know the one: "He is on Q" or "Backups are on the F Drive", etc.

Although I have an article KB / CTX available explaining how to change the letters of the user and local drive, I added an update to reflect all elements XenClient Citrix administrator or support representative must look after XCE 4.x:

  • What kind VM disk image of the administrator uses for VM deployment (PVD, shared or custom)
  • Which drive letters are used in the Windows environment to the administrator for the purpose of infrastructure
  • is it necessary to change both the user's default drive (U) and the local drive (s) or is it appropriate to change the place of the other?

First, the players A, B C, a D must never be used to replace the user's drive letter or local drive letter. Simply put: this is sacred ground Windows

Second, if the administrator is using a PVD image for their VM deployment, user or local drive player should never be set to P

[1945006!] Allow me to repeat this :!

If the administrator is using a PVD image for their VM deployment, the User drive or local drive must never be put at P

reason is that for PvD VMs, the P drive is used in VM deployment to prepare the VM within a motor. Using P to the User drive or local will result in failure to publish.

So my great clients, peers and Citrix fans, do not use drive letters A, B, C, D or P when preparing a virtual machine to be deployed to your engines

that said, check out the links to XenClient 5.0.4 as well as the link to our discussion forum about this release :. thank you to Pete and David for their endless knowledge, time and contributions!
