In the blog previous post, we covered the steps to prepare a main picture XenApp server for supply. We installed the software needed to communicate with PVS, made a PXE boot and prepared a virgin vDisk to store the image of the server. We are now ready to continue and capture XenApp Master Image in a PVS vDisk.

From the launch of XenApp Master Image XenConvert server. XenConvert options we use will " This machine " and " Provisioning Services vDisk ."

Be sure to take the following steps, the next step : ..

1. Remove the disk write cache from the list of players Source
2. Click the Autofit button to automatically adjust the free space of vDisk

After editing, the screen should look like this: (numerical values will be different)

On the next screen, click the Optimize button for Provisioning services . Make sure that all options are selected

Click the Convert button to start conversion button. You may be prompted to format the disk, you should do. Once the conversion process is finished, stop the XenApp server image master, and return to the PVS service console. The PVS console, change the mode from the vDisk access Private to Standard . Also change the type of cover Cache on the hard drive of the unit

We are now ready to begin deploying new XenApp servers from the vDisk created. From the service console PVS launch the setup wizard Streamed VM . Start the wizard by selecting the hypervisor you use, and enter the credentials used to access the hypervisor

Next select the VM template created earlier from the XenApp backup. Specify the PVS collection where XenApp VMs are created, and select XenApp vDisk to assign.

Next, specify the number of virtual machines to create (I recommend one or two for initial testing), how many vCPUs to allocate, and the amount of memory to allocate

Next specify the OU where the accounts will be created in Active Directory, and to define a naming scheme account. After reviewing the summary of settings, tap Finish to begin the process of building virtual machines. If everything is successful, you should now see new XenApp VMs in your hypervisor.

Power on the new XenApp virtual machines. If the VM model used to create the machine was configured with a static IP address, you must assign a new IP address at this point to avoid IP conflicts.

Log in to the new XenApp server and launch the Citrix Application Centre. Run Discovery and specify a XenApp server controller in the server farm to manage.

Expand the Farm node and select the Servers folder. New provisioned XenApp servers should be listed

If you have published applications Groups worker, then you want to add new servers to workers groups so they can start serving applications. Other measures recommended to perform are:

• Provide redirection to write caching works properly for the Pagefile and event logs
• Configure the antivirus software as described in CTX127030 and CTX124185 .. antivirus signature files must be placed on the write cache drive.
• Hide write cache drive using a GPO.
• From the service console PVS follow the process to configure the vDisk using Microsoft KMS or MAK Volume Licensing. To configure KMS see CTX128276, follow scenario 2 procedures. To configure MAK see Configuring Microsoft MAK Volume Licensing in eDocs.

This article provides information on typical configuration problems that may face while working with Citrix Receiver Cloud Gateway. It emphasizes that Citrix Administrator should do when several errors occur in Citrix Receiver for Android and work with @Work Apps for Android. Most of the company's services now run on the Web or HTTP layer S /. Companies are transforming the Web faster because each company wants to move to a model based on the cloud for their services. This decision is even more difficult, because there is not a single question which can be asked to decide on the appropriate model . So, do not ask a single question. 6 ask J

Say you have a group of users who should be locked so they can not make any customizations to their virtual environment. Which model should I use?

seems easy ... Hosted shared.

Not so fast. This might not be the best option.

First, what models can support a requirement "No Customization" (I talked about the customization requirement in a previous blog)? All, D'oh! Even a dedicated desktop computer "would "work, but seems like a bad idea. Why give users a virtual desktop that is based on a use case of complete customization when they need without customization?

If we reduce this decline, our best option would probably Hosted shared desktops (as we originally said), but a Pooled VDI and VHD Streamed are as capable and should be considered as good options.

what if the organization has already deployed XenDesktop for some users and currently has no deployment of XenApp? is still shared hosted the best option? Not really. I'd probably opt for Pooled VDI because the organization already knows how to deploy / manage. If we shared Hosted, a new environment, a new thing to learn and support.

What if this group of users is local and has applications that run hot enough (lots of CPU, RAM or graphics)? Pooled VDI is always the best option? Perhaps, but Streamed VHD looks pretty good too.

What if the solution must be cost-consciousness? I will now go further into the camp of Streamed VHD. Use local materials instead of purchasing a large number of servers, certainly cheaper alternative.

This is how Accelerator project determines FlexCast. It gathers information in many different categories and ranks FlexCast model appropriately as good, better, best and Bad. The only "scoring" is our highest recommendation. Any model of FlexCast receive a single "Bad" rating in any category is removed from further consideration.

There is a time, I wrote about ControlUp and how it can help monitor Citrix environments XenApp and XenDesktop in real time. Looking your positive feedback, I decided to keep an eye on this tool.

For those of you managing large deployments of XenApp or XenDesktop, a central configuration allows all users in the same organization ControlUp to see the same computer tree (similar to AppCenter). An authorization delegation option also allows the administration with role-based views and actions based on AD groups (again, similar to AppCenter)

From admin viewpoint Citrix, the the most interesting new features are probably the following :.

• programs and updates Controller - this new controller allows you to quickly compare software and updates installed on multiple XenApp or XenDesktop virtual machines, making it easy for you to identify if a patch or software component is missing on one of your. Servers

• New Citrix columns of data - Datacenter Citrix Desktop Surveillance and - This new version of ControlUp adds all performance counters XenApp and XenDesktop mentioned in our operations Guide. One of the key decisions during a XenDesktop design is whether the use of 32-bit (x86 ) or 64-bit (x64) version of the Windows desktop operating system. I saw some projects falter because they have opted for the 64-bit without really thinking through the decision and I want to make sure this does not happen to you.

question: What is the advantage to implement a 64-bit desktop operating system

The main advantage of a 64-bit operating system is that it allows you to assign the more physical memory on the desktop. With the 32-bit version of Windows XP or Windows 7, you are limited to 4 GB of physical memory (there are some techniques available to extend this limit, but they are not without drawbacks - see the blog of Daniel Feller to more information). However, with 64-bit versions of this limit is raised to 128 GB for Windows XP and 192GB for Windows 7 Professional.

Sounds good, but how many people really need more than 4GB of RAM? In my experience, this requirement is limited to a very small number of large users within the company, for example, developers or designers. Most people can get by just fine with 2-4GB of RAM. Another advantage of 64-bit operating systems is that they allow you to run 64-bit applications (applications written specifically for 64-bit operating system will not run on 32-bit operating systems). However, most 64-bit applications are also available as 32-bit applications

Question :. Although most people do not need 4GB of RAM, why not use the 64-bit version so you have the ability to support more than 4GB of RAM in the future? After all, the application memory requirements are increasing.

There is a valid argument, but the main problem with the 64-bit operating systems is that they can not support 16-bit applications and more companies still have applications 16 bits lying around. Even 32-bit applications can have 16-bit code elements in them (and many do!). ? So what are the options

1: Deploy a 32-bit operating system limited to 4 GB of RAM for most users. Providing power users with a 64-bit operating system so they can be allocated more than 4GB of RAM

Note :. For future reference, Windows 8 is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit

2 :. Deploy an operating system 64-bit for everyone and use Microsoft Windows 08 x86 with Citrix XenApp 5.0 to provide 16-bit applications.

Note: 5.0 is the latest version of XenApp released that supports a 32-bit version of Microsoft Server (Microsoft Server 08). Windows 08 R2 is required for XenApp 6.x and is 64-bit only. Standard support for Microsoft Server 08 ended January 13 ^e , 2015 (extended support ends January 14, 2020). End of Life (EOL) for XenApp 5 is also 13th January 2015 (extended support ends January 14, 2020)

3 :. Deploy an operating system 64-bit for everyone and use VM Hosted Apps to provide 16-bit applications 32-bit desktop operating systems

4 :. Deploy an operating system 64-bit for everyone and replace / re-engineer all applications to 32 bits or 64 bits.

question: The other disadvantages

Another disadvantage of selecting a 64-bit desktop operating system is that you will need to find 64-bit drivers. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done, and you may well struggle to some of the old drivers there

Unless you are designing virtual desktops for people who need more than 4? GB of memory, the simplest approach is with a 32-bit desktop operating system (VDI or hosted hosted Shared). Q. -what SR-IOV supported for use as HBA with Citrix XenServer?. There is no cisco CNAs included in the Hardware Compatibility List for XenServer document speak only of SR-IOV for NPI, not for HBAs?

A. Cisco currently only supports Hyper-V and KVM with SR-IOV.

Q. Which teams should participate in making this change? for example. Network, SAN etc.?

A. As with any deployment of a server, you will need the input network, SAN, security, and other teams. The difference with Cisco UCS is that you will only need detailed input once, while creating the service model profile, and after that you'll simply deploy from the model.

Q. Do you recommend HyperThreading leave off?

A. No, we recommend enabling HyperThreading (by default it is enabled).

Q. How many virtual interfaces can support a VIC? Is it similar to HP Flex 10?

If the very mention of the word "code" you cringe like nails on a blackboard, then read no further. But if you take the front coding challenges, then this session is for you.

Over the last 12 years, I share a litany of information on the web interface customizations and integrations in various Citrix NetScaler forums. While most would be intimidated by the complexity, time and effort that goes in advanced customizations, the examples will be demonstrated during this session to Citrix Synergy show that it would be well worth it. My IPM team was also to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of StoreFront and compare those Web Interface. This session will present some of the best practices we have assembled and give you valuable insight to keep in mind when deciding to stay with the Web or migrate to StoreFront interface.

So why customize?

There are several reasons - both technical and commercial perspective - about advanced customizations reasons are worth their weight in gold. When standard customizations involve superficial and visible changes, advanced customization add functionality to the web interface offering a value-add. Think branding, speed, accountability, audit-ability, administration and user experience.

after a very successful SAPPHIRE in Orlando last week (for those of you who do not know me yet, I run the alliance with SAP to Citrix) and a short weekend at home yesterday, I took from San Jose to Los Angeles today with many other Citrix, customers and partners for colleagues here for Citrix and Citrix Summit Synergy this week. Two exciting events in a row organized by my two most favorite companies, Citrix and SAP.

At SAPPHIRE last week I had a meeting with a common customer who is about to implement XenDesktop, including virtualization and provisioning of SAP components like front -end SAPGUI etc. . during the conversation, the client asked me if using XenDesktop while on a plane in the air actually work, and if so how the performance will be. I promised to do a real test soon and share the results with him

So while the flight with Virgin America VX236 SJC at LAX today I made this short performance test :.

• Wait until the "Turn off all electronic devices of light exploded (very important, you do not want to have trouble with the crew)
• Last on my MacBook Air (starting time approx. 8-9 seconds, nothing beats MacOS and SSD)
• start iPass Open Mobile to connect to the Internet (Citrix has a business account with iPass very handy)
• Internet connection, the connection has been established in about 15 seconds.
• Launching Citrix Receiver and connect to my virtual office in our corporate network (actually running in a San Jose data center)
• measuring the latency HDX monitor and performance testing

As you can see in the tweet I wrote at the time latency was 51 ms. Not bad at all to be at 35,000 feet. The user experience was as good as when you are sitting in my office at home or elsewhere. (The only problem was the passenger in front of me always moving back and forth with his back seat, difficult to type on such a goal / keyboard movement ). SAP Enterprise Portal or SAPGUI worked without any problems up there (Citrix is ​​a SAP customer, not just a partner).

If you, as the customer I spoke to last week SAPPHIRE, work or intend to work with our products in an SAP environment, I can just tell you that it will work like a charm, even on a plane in the clouds over California.

When I was a child, I loved Schoolhouse Rock! "Conjunction Junction", "a noun is a person, place or thing" were both good, but the infamous "I'm just a bill" is my favorite. I think it was just the way he explained things. You go from an idea to become a law and there are steps along the way you follow ... 1, 2, 3, and so on. Cool, I understand. I think there is a parallel here with mobile applications and how we do as an industry to get ready to be used by businesses to scale. Of course, we can say that applications begin as ideas and then end up being packaged and delivered to end users, but there is much more involved in getting this right. Some of it is technical and part is process-oriented.

It is with this aim that I want to discuss today's announcement about Worx Mobile Apps, App SDK and Worx Worx App Gallery. These three elements are essential to make mobile applications ready for the enterprise and deliver them to the people. I will share some nuggets about this ad that brought this home to me:

Here are the instructions to download Citrix XenApp, Citrix XenDesktop and Citrix XenApp Fundamentals assessment or developer license

Step 1: Sign up for a free MyCitrix account Create an account

Step 2: Connect to Citrix and click "Overview product / Releases Beta

Step 3: Choose appreciate license and copy the license code and click My account

Step 4: Click on Activate and Allocate Licenses

Step 5: Click Assign, then click

Quantum OpenStack network becomes more important because it gives much more flexibility to cloud users than its predecessor, Nova network. If you are interested in the details, look at the wiki page of the project. I highly recommend the videos because they were very helpful to me during my journey into the world of OpenStack Networking. Just after the summit in Havana, all fixes that have allowed the use of Quantum with XenServer were waiting to be approved. All the work was done by Maru Newby, with the initial patch available at the end of 2012. You can find the patch here. Unfortunately, the patch did not release Grizzly and we decided to put a lot more effort to get OpenStack Networking working with XenServer.

As I had no previous experience with Quantum, I started reading the wiki, watch the video to get some basic understanding. Right after that, I started testing the patches provided by Maru Newby.

devstack I used to set up the environment that several changes had to be made to make it easier to test Quantum. Devstack was then modified so that it does not connect to the home network for all physical interfaces, and we also get rid of the mess VLAN tagging. There is much more to do to start with devstack on XenServer easier. A plan was created to save our efforts.

Simple installation using Devstack Box

I do not want to duplicate the wiki page that describes how to install while a developer instance OpenStack Quantum. I want to show what the environment looks like.

Deployment Architecture

This will give you a glimpse of what devstack done. The most important difference is that you will have two L2 agents :.

• q-domua management openvswitch in domU, providing connectivity for dhcp
  and routing components physnet1 network
• q-agt management openvswitch in dom0, connecting tenants interfaces
  physnet1 the network.

You might ask, what is physnet1. This network is the network of data centers, the network is available on the hypervisor, such as "OpenStack VM Network". It is not connected to any physical interfaces, so do not be confused by the phys.

Let's look at the configuration, by issueing quantum controls

 net-list quantum $ 

shows two networks, public and private use

 $ net-show quantum.  

will show the details of these networks look at the private network. supplier: network_type is vlan and provider.. physical_network is physnet1 you can see what id VLAN is used in my case, private . uses VLAN 1000. These figures come from localrc file, see OVS_VLAN_RANGES variable if you want to change the range used

the configuration of the switches

the openvswitch configuration could display as:

 $ sudo OVS-vsctl show 

Watch the integration bridge, and note the interfaces dhcp server (qdhcp-) and the router (qrouter-). Also note, that the integration bridge has an uplink port to the bridge physnet1 - int-br-eth1

Now go to dom0, and watch the network configuration :.

 # xe network-list 

You should see a network with the name OpenStack VM integration network. Note the bridge and watch the configuration openvswitch:

 # sudo OVS-vsctl show 

This is the switch that is used by the tenant VMs. You can see a port VLAN id hang out with 4095. This is an interface that is connected to domU, but not used. It is keen to force xapi to create the bridge openvswitch underlying. It appeared that the mere creation of a network via xapi does not create the openvswitch bridge. Please note that this bridge also has an uplink port physnet1

Mapping to physnet1

Back to domU, look at the flow :.

 $ sudo OVS-ofctl br-int show 

And find the line that represents the uplink to the physical thread:

 3 (int-br-eth1): addr: 5a: bf: 61: b5: 45: 49 

And how VLANs are mapped to the physical network:

 $ sudo OVS-ofctl dump br-int flow 

And in my case, the private network VLAN tags with the id 1 on the domU br-int

 ... in_port = 3 = 1000 dl_vlan mod_vlan_vid shares = 1, NORMAL 

so we expect that the port of the server dhcp and the router is labeled with VLAN 1. Run sudo OVS-vsctl show, and search for the tag :. lines to check this

Next steps

I am intentionally not covering the public network. This network is assumed to be the external network. If you look at the configuration, you find that it is mapped to physnet1 as well, but if you're looking for flows with sudo OVS-ofctl dump br ex-flow, you will not find traces of the VLAN id. You will need to start another agent to handle your br-ex bridge.
