French television network TV5MONDE was attacked by a group of hackers thought to be connected with the Islamic extremist group ISIS. The chain has suffered throughout the broadcast failures and attacks on their social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The French Minister of Culture is planning an emergency meeting held after ISIS cyber attack to assess the security of the French media.
The attack took place on Wednesday and Thursday, 22 hours to one hour, resulting in a loss of broadcast on over 11 channels. The attackers claimed allegiance to the Islamic State and shows for the first time the sophistication of their hacking abilities. The Minister of Culture of France, Fleur Pellerin organize the meeting in an effort to stop new attacks against the French media.
Security has increased since the attacks of Charlie Hebdo office back in January, where 17 people died at the hands of a terrorist attack in Paris. The hacks on sites included warning messages that French soldiers take measures against ISIS they should stay away from the Islamic State in order to save their families. It is not known how hackers managed to run such a complex and sophisticated attack on the French television channel that the attack took down every computer system at the headquarters of the station in Paris. These systems ran all of the production equipment and even the servers required to deliver content.
It is hoped that the meeting will have a positive effect and increase the security of the French media.
