Many of our users ask questions about how to open blocked sites. When traveling, living abroad or you are at school or at work, chances are that some sites are blocked. This is all you need to know about why the websites are blocked and how to go beyond these limitations

In this article I will describe:

  • Why websites are blocked
  • How websites are blocked
  • Helping VPN unblocking websites
  • How to open blocked sites

There are two main reasons why websites are stranded abroad. First, some governments impose censorship in order to prevent people from accessing certain sites they consider immoral. Second, many sites are geo-stranded abroad due to copyright restrictions on their multimedia content. For example, you may have noticed that you can not enter your Netflix account or Beats Music when you are abroad, and it is because of these limitations of copyright. In addition to this, many schools and workplaces block websites they deem inappropriate or wasteful of time.

basic technical training

I'm not a techie myself so I'll keep this super simple explanation. In essence, each computer is assigned a unique IP address that can be used to search for your position and attach to your online activities. Every time you try to access a website that is blocked abroad, say Netflix, the site will be your IP and therefore your location. If you are outside of their catchment areas, you will be blocked.

The government implemented censorship and firewalls from school or the office of the other work at hand a little differently. There are several ways they can block access. They can see the source and final destination of all traffic passing through their networks. So if you try to access a site that is blocked in your country, say Facebook, the censors can block all traffic to it.

A brief explanation VPNs

Now, having said that, here's the interesting part. With a virtual private network (VPN), all traffic is encrypted and then re-routed by the operator VPN servers. First, it makes it impossible to see the censor incoming and outgoing traffic from your computer. This way, they can not block certain information or websites. Second, given that everything is re-routed, they can not know the final destination as you navigate.

For example, say you are in China and trying to access Facebook. If you are connected to a VPN server in another country, all traffic goes first through it, and then to Facebook. Re-routing and encryption makes it impossible for government censors to know what traffic goes through your connection, and also what sites you access. You are essentially creating a kind of tunnel between you and the VPN server that you are connected. This way, all traffic is securely encrypted so that the government can not intercept or block.
