What is the size of the office (DaaS) Hosted Market? (Part 1) -

Undoubtedly, "What is the size of hosted desktop market" is investigating top I get from our Citrix Service Provider (CSP) partners.

Our thousands of global partners continue to make investments in infrastructure, marketing, business operations and sales. and often they go to them (and sometimes to external investors) to finance hunt high margin, high value-hosted desktop market.

the problem is, how do you estimate the size of a market that is so relatively new that it does has not been followed? well, it happens that some investigations have already been taken, and there are also a number of "adjacent" markets convert desktops hosted ....

what is a cloud hosted desktop? desktop-as-a-Service?

first, let's define the terms. Traditionally, your "office" (typically Microsoft Windows) is the container for all your personal productivity applications and the workplace. It is your own environment with your data and personalization of information - not to mention protected by your security credentials. This environment is also traditionally run locally on your own equipment (laptop, desktop, etc.).

Enter Virtual Desktops . These can be fully functional workstations - complete with applications, personalization, and security - but physically their software runs on a server elsewhere ... but typically somewhere on the same network in the same company, and generally on a server in a data center. These workstations based on the server are owned and managed by the IT department of the company, then delivered to each user.

However, the cloud hosted virtual desktop goes a step further. It runs on a server, but maybe in a third party data center that is off-premesis. Its data and the user experience is delivered on the public Internet. The third part is typically a managed service provider (MSP) contracted by the company to provide and maintain jobs. The user can expect from a desktop application and an identical experience ... except the power of computing lies somewhere in "the cloud".

Some now call cloud hosted desktop model "desktop-as-a-Service" (DaaS) in that office is considered a local executable software. Rather, it is delivered and managed as a Internet access on demand - meaning it can be turned on / off at will, and billed for any purpose like, every day, or (usually) monthly service schedule

[ Why DaaS cloud-Hosted so new?

to be honest, as long as we had the concept of cloud computing, there was the desire to host desktops. But inhibitors have revolved around two main axes: the physical and the more mundane aspects of licensing. Although the licensing aspect of a third party owners desktop license has been solved, because it took more time to work around nature. The Internet networks to be faster and lower latency - .. both of which contribute to user experience

The good news is that these two issues have been resolved for purposes to the satisfaction of all concerned

OK: So how big is the market? What is the chance?

Since the DaaS market is so new, we must consider a variety of existing and adjacent settings. We will also have to use the most plausible methods to evaluate the opportunity.

Note that a number of these statistics are excerpts from the research from a number of analysts / sources. Full reports are not in the public domain are available only analysts themselves.

  1. The outsourcing market existing desktop . This is defined as the owner of the computer (desktop computers usually operate locally) turning to a third party to manage and maintain desktops. According to Gartner Research, the global market is about 30 billion US $. One would think that over time, a certain percentage of companies in this category would instead turn to a hosted cloud model for the maintenance and support - rather than continuing a local delivery model and outsourced maintenance. Even a change of 1% of that market would result in a DaaS market of US $ 300 million.
  2. As a% of cloud services. MSPmentor in their 2012 World Report (part of TalkinCloud), noted that Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is offered by 48.9% of the top 100 MSP. (Note that some of this number probably includes accommodation on premesis VDI) While the number of revenue breakdown for the services offered, are not available, the top 100 MSPs annual recurring revenue in 2011 was over $ 1 billion. If even a small fraction of the revenue mix of a given MSP includes cloud hosting office, we still have the makings of a healthy market.
  3. The broader market Virtualization Desktop . (This includes cloud In server-, client- and accommodation; session-based computing, application virtualization, management) According to The 451 Group, the virtualization market Market Desktop ecosystems is estimated at $ 5.6 billion in 2016 .. again, if even a few percent of the hosting cloud component manifests, we have a market easily in the hundreds of millions of uS $.
  4. Hosted Workspace-as-a-Service market . Again, this market definition varies from pure DaaS. But according to a recent IDC study, the total WW market in 2016 is estimated at over US $ 661 million.

What we still need

Surprisingly some analysts and industry associations to formally follow DaaS. Neither MSPmentor, MSPAlliance or Web Host Industry Review follow the DaaS market as they do other traditional accommodation statistics - nor index leading MSP, DSP and desktops offer hosted cloud HSP, DaaS, etc. I hope that changes soon.

However, there is good news on two fronts. For service providers, the opportunity to host workstation is new, increasingly, and very profitable. And for business users, the hosted desktop represent a new world where your workspace is available anywhere, anytime, and not subject to hardware failure / loss.

Stay tuned for another blog in this series which will further help to sketch the opportunity for desktops and hosted workspaces. [Part 2 Here]
