Now available: XenServer Hardware GPU Sharing Technology Preview -

VMworld week, I announced that we would soon be a technology preview for sharing real hardware GPU (vGPU ) with NVIDIA GPU GRID. By the time I planned a statement at the end of September, and we would support vGPU 7 on XenDesktop with some patches for XenServer 6.2.

In fact, we ended up slipping October 1 st (not too bad of a sheet considering this is a software), and we have aligned our tech preview with tech preview XenDesktop 7.1 XenDesktop teams. Doing this allows us to enjoy some improvements in XenDesktop, but also to simplify the installation process.

What do I assess sharing GPU hardware?

You will need compatible hardware (some options are listed in my previous blog), XenServer 6.2 and XenDesktop 7.1 technical preview. All details are listed on our vGPU tech preview page. Please note that you will need a valid and active connection MyCitrix XenDesktop Subscription Advantage to access this content. Since this is an overview of the technology, we are aware of certain problems and we highly recommend to anyone performing an assessment read the release notes carefully.

Does the vGPU preview technology work with XenDesktop 7?

vGPU carrier benefits from several enhancements included in the overview of the XenDesktop 7.1 technology. Unfortunately, we are not able to create compatible patches for XenDesktop 7.

Is it appropriate technology preview for production use?

No. Technology Previews are designed to provide our customers with quick access to potential functionality, and should never be considered "ready for production".

Can I use this with Windows technical preview 8.1?

No. This technology preview is designed for Windows 7 and Windows Server 08R2 workloads only and the pilot beam does not work with Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.

Will I be able to upgrade the technology preview is released when vGPU?

It is very unlikely that an upgrade path is scheduled between this overview of the technology and any potential release of XenDesktop and XenServer that enable the functionality. Since the next question is likely to be when this is also something that I unfortunately can not comment.
