Citrix gets Google-eyed -

Recently at Citrix Summit Singapore I had the opportunity to co-present a session with members of the Google sales team Enterprise. At the meeting, we discussed the value of a common solution Citrix / Google for businesses that are looking to alternatives to their traditional computing environment office. This post examines why Citrix and Google are working together, and identifies some of the product innovations being developed to create a more complete solution for customers.

It was not long ago that the idea of Citrix and Google as partners of the solution seemed foreign. Because of the consumerization of IT, has changed as organizations explore alternatives for new IT policies for end users. Citrix + Google is a great fit, and it starts with the vision of companies share to calculate. Both believe in a world that considers work as something you do and not a place where you go, people deserve the choice of the camera and freedom and the company moves to a new era it is delivered as a service. In this world, individuals are empowered to do their job with all the tools they choose. Citrix customers will be familiar with the Citrix vision "Better Work, live better." Google has a similar vision and described as "Work the way you live."

Organisations, will often be the first Google meeting as an iT provider of business through Gmail and Google Apps. Google has had tremendous success in education and are earning in a range of industry sectors. Google Apps customers include large corporations such as General Electric, Costco, National Geographic and DHL. in fact, "58% of Fortune 500 companies have gone Google" as determined by 2012 Fortune 500 report. Australia and New Zealand, where I am based, we see large organizations throughout the aviation, media and retail sectors are switching to Google for email and productivity applications.

The switch to Google for mail and docs is often the first step for organizations, but many are now considering how they still embrace the Google platform. Google Chrome is the recommended method for access to Gmail and Google Apps. It is available as a Web browser and also as an operating system in the form of Chromebook devices. Google has partnered with leading hardware vendors such as Samsung, HP, Acer, Lenovo and Dell to release Chromebooks. These offer a more integrated environment for users to use Google services at a price similar to thin clients, and are an alternative to running a Windows client device.

The challenge for organizations that want to go this route is how to deal with their existing Windows applications. In most cases, most of their enterprise applications are based on Windows. In addition, many applications are web applications are still dependent on Internet Explorer. Of course, one option is to redevelop these Windows and Web applications, but it is unlikely to generate a positive return for the company and therefore other options must be considered. A proven alternative is to use virtualization to deliver existing Windows and Chrome Web applications.

As the industry leader in application virtualization, Citrix is working with Google to help organizations along this journey. By deploying Citrix applications and desktop visualization solutions for organizations are able to adopt Google solutions without having to re-write or replace potentially the Windows 1000 line of business applications or Web sites that require authentication AD and specific versions of the browser.

This solution uses one of the large chain retail in Australia, which has now deployed a Citrix solution to Google + offices. The deployment has made the transition from the personal Chromebooks with Gmail, Google Docs and Google Drive for their productivity tools; HTML5 and Citrix Receiver to access their desktops from Windows Apps and virtually via XenApp and XenDesktop.

A demonstration of this capability was included in Citrix Summit in Singapore. The demonstration focused on three case extremely common use of that need just work perfectly for end users. The first was to allow the transparent opening an attachment inside a Windows virtual application from Gmail. The second showed how users can access all their files in a virtual Windows environment on the Chromebook, they are stored on a network share, Google Drive or another location. If end use showed how it was possible to copy and paste text between Windows virtual applications and browser-based applications.

This focus on the end user, and the recognition of the broader market trend to alternative end user IT strategies for companies is the search engine Citrix in new ways of working together with Google. Research is ongoing in many fields and technologies solution. In the area of identity management, Citrix is looking at the possibility of simplifying access to Windows resources by allowing a Google ID to connect to applications and virtual desktops Citrix.

In the collaboration space, the Citrix SaaS team has developed a prototype of a GoToMeeting customer HTML5 version that people can continue to work using GoToMeeting on Chromebooks. The Citrix Labs team integrated the experimental application Crystal Palace with Google Docs to enable faster sharing and collaboration document. Whether any of these are officially released remains uncertain and depends on customer demand, but it is reassuring to know that Citrix continued investment in this area.

In summary, for companies selecting Google as a component in their IT solutions to end users, Citrix offers integrated solutions that allow access to existing windows and Web applications, critical to the operation of the company. Especially, we are working closely with Google on an ongoing basis to evolve our joint solution, and experiment more broadly with HTML5 in our set of solutions in response to the adoption of solutions based on Chrome by the market. Of course, if you want more information on any of these works please contact us at Citrix.
