For many traditional CAD, CAE and PLM industries with strict control of product cycle life such as automotive and Aerospace, virtualization has been approached with caution. CAD moves slowly and the cost of change is high and concerns about network speed, security and maturity of solutions meant much kept out, surveying the Cloud and Virtualization away, waiting to see if the benefits the outweigh the risks.
This week, with an overview of GPU technology for sharing VDI hardware; Citrix and NVIDIA introduced another piece in what is now a very compelling portfolio which provides all the elements needed to virtualize CAD and PLM widely. Citrix XenServer and XenDesktop really became CAD and PLM natural platform
vGPU -. True sharing GPU hardware
In addition to Citrix passthrough GPU and GPU hardware sharing for existing Windows Server workloads, this new technology allows the benefits of GPU acceleration to operate at lower cost. Passthrough GPU has been used for some time, which allows designers such as Boeing to work using applications such as Dassault CATIA remotely. Our existing software GPU sharing technologies have proven to be very in providing graphically intensive applications such as Dassault SolidWorks, Ansys Workbench and Application Fluent and Autodesk. By offering the full range of real passthrough GPU and GPU shared equipment vGPU via the Citrix portfolio offers the greatest possible flexibility organizations to optimize their use of GPU technology. Citrix XenDesktop allows you to deliver desktops and applications for employees freeing them from traditional desktops. Dassault allow employees to share and remotely debug projects with these vital and sensitive visual piece without data leaving the datacenter.
Citrix Receiver
Citrix is the company mobility of virtualization. We do not do server virtualization, but the whole stack of mobility solutions that enable you to deliver visualization to any device anywhere. The key to delivering this Citrix Receiver is a software client that allows you to access your applications, desktops and data easily and securely from any device, including smartphones, tablets, PCs and Macs. Security, Virtualization
Virtualization offers tremendous benefits for the protection and data security. As a XenServer hypervisor has worked with Intel to ensure we integrate with their new secure boot technology and Intel TXT secure boot full support is already available. XenDesktop allows administrators to backup and anti-virus software is centrally controlled, updated and orchestrated to minimize network load. XenServer also has a long history in the US government and federal deployments.
Virtualization should not mean public cloud, but it may if appropriate to reduce costs. In practice, we expect to see a mixture of private and secure enterprise server virtualization and private cloud for increased flexibility and public cloud services can offer.

- Ciespace is one of a number of clouds CAE platforms to emulate phenomenally successful CAD platform cloud GrabCAD
- SolidEdge recently changed their license for a friendly SaaS cloud model and facilitated direct publication GrabCAD
- AutoDesk is a Citrix key partner that is making waves with their Autodesk 360 cloud
- PTC Creo have virtualized, together with an alliance of IBM, NVIDIA and Citrix XenServer they deliver reference architectures for the next generation of delivering CAD
