The Big Boys Backup Citrix XenDesktop on NVIDIA vGPU and XenServer, aÌ Dell, HP, IBM and Cisco -

So here we are a few weeks after the launch of Citrix technologies and NVIDIA, and AOS vGPU here XenServer partner engineering we see huge amounts of information and reference solutions come through our OEM partners. The advent of vGPU for Citrix XenDesktop on XenServer and other Citrix technologies to support remote graphics 3D CAD and improved Windows Aero experience was possible thanks to investment by our largest hardware partners in their advisory teams and server technologies. Personally, I find blogs and reference solutions from these partners a fascinating read so I AOVE tried to gather some of my favorite sources of information.

IBM

Dave Coutts (IBM Distinguished Engineer & CTO industry STG) wrote an excellent blog that links to most IBM initiatives, AOS in that area. IBM has been a key partner in building reference architectures for CAD virtualization with the likes of PTC and AutoDesk. IBM has also worked closely with Citrix, NVIDIA and PLM organizations.

Dell

Dell have been investing in reference to vGPU, especially on their R720 platform. Manish Chacko, Dell AOS, AOS blog is another great read with lots of links and scalability figures. vGPU will soon be available in the Dell reference architectures, but Manish AOS, AOS blog will give you some spoilers.

HP

HP also worked hard on their reference architectures for graphics deployments, which resulted in an absolute must read, now available here, for those who try to decide on a solution to provide anything related graphics or CAD, including remotely. Although the White Paper refers to their hot new WS460c Gen8 platform most of the information is useful to anyone considering the use of the GPU. I, AOM particularly keen on this reference because it covers not only Citrix solutions, AOS also VMware technologies, SOA and vSGA vDGA with Microsoft, AOS FX remotely. HP studied the performance and limitations of different solutions in reference to the support of certain rendering technologies such as DirectX and OpenGL, and recommend solutions and how particularly suitable for different types of CAD, Windows Office, PLM users. In particular, give a very good overview of the technologies that complement our own, if you are looking for a supplier agnostic description of what all these vSGA, acronyms vGPU, this may well mean vDGA tick .

HP also have interesting blogs on 3D graphics and virtualization available.

Cisco

Cisco are also active bloggers, again with links to reference architectures around GPU virtualization. Cisco have a long history of large-scale deployments of XenDesktop and case studies and architecture are fascinating on their site! Cisco is a partner, we worked closely with, and you can find more on how this will help CAD and graphics remotely in VDI deployments here on the Citrix website.

If you want to know more about why OEMs are excited that we are on the vGPU to check customer references who have tried the technology during the technology preview here. For an overview of the business case for these technologies, you can read about some of my previous blogs and links they contain:
