XenServer 6.2 is now fully open source!

This is an exciting day for Citrix, customers and the open source community we announce some great news for Citrix XenServer. Today we cross another milestone that XenServer moves to a full open source model, starting with the new XenServer 6.2. Cutting right to the chase, here are the highlights that I will go into more detail:

  • XenServer 6.2 is available as an open platform open source virtualization to all users
  • Citrix is also introducing a new community portal XenServer.org
  • Citrix provides a paid version of XenServer that includes support and maintenance
  • new CPU socket license
  • new simplified package and price

Ok, so now we will delve into each of these topics to get the full story ...

XenServer is now open source

the big, big news of the day is the move to open source XenServer as part of the commitment and Citrix strategy to enable the best platform to provide our customers a path to the cloud. Leveraging our experience as a leader in desktop virtualization and the dominant virtualization platform in the public cloud, Citrix aims to provide a continuous path for customers to migrate their most important workloads for environment cloud. The first part of this strategy has already occurred in April when Xen was moved from Xen.org to the Linux Foundation and became the Xen project TM . You can read more about the transition to the Linux Foundation and Xen Xen in the history of James Bulpin and open-source blog.

But why open source Citrix XenServer itself? For starters, much of XenServer was already open source, leveraging the Xen project packages, Linux kernel and the initiative Cloud Platform (XCP). We believe that open source plays a strategic role in the future of virtualization technology and cloud and only open source offering opportunities for collaboration, open innovation and economies of scale that these markets demand . By open sourcing XenServer, customers, partners and developers benefit from full public visibility on the continued development and future of XenServer and can engage directly with us to bring new features of XenServer, and build deep integrations guide the architectural direction of the platform. In summary, an open source strategy was chosen because:

  1. Open source is in the DNA of Xen and XenSource
  2. FOSS proprietary software leads in infrastructure cloud
  3. Open source enables the collaborative development and causes the public trust.
  4. open source communities allow users and expand market reach.

Tomorrow, Richard Sharp, Vice President of Product Development XenServer continue this conversation with a deep dive in the open source strategy to be sure to come back and read his blog.

If XenServer is open source, which provides Citrix?

With the change to open source, Citrix XenServer is now available for everyone on the new community of XenServer.org. What is Citrix provides sustained commercial distribution of XenServer for customers running XenServer in an environment that guarantees the "insurance policy" for sustained commercial product. You can think of this as Red Hat Enterprise Linux against Linux. In terms of functionality and functionality, the only difference will be that the free Citrix XenServer users will not be able to use XenCenter for automated installation of security patches, updates and maintenance releases. Free Citrix XenServer includes XenCenter management server, but not patch management. By buying Citrix XenServer you get:

  • Citrix Premier 24 × 7 media worldwide
  • produced commercially packaged and certified
  • patching and restated simplified day via XenCenter
  • Indemnity and protection license
  • Citrix knowledgebase & My account Portal

Introducing the New Community XenServer.org

in addition to any product announcements, we are also pleased to introduce the new community portal to provide access XenServer.org source code as well as the drive innovation and discussion around server virtualization and clouds. For more information on the community, what it means for you and how to participate visit XenServer.org. But who better to talk about the community that Lars Kurth, community director XenServer.org so for the story take a look at his blog on XenServer.org.

New Licensing CPU socket

From XenServer 6.2, the licensing model passes each per socket licensing server. Change is directly aligned with the optimization of cloud strategy and product activation. For starters, taking licenses is aligned with most cloud solutions orchestration and cloud management as Citrix CloudPlatform and Apache CloudStack while also being the norm in all other virtualization offerings on the market. Socket license will be easier to predict licensing costs by using a single apple to apples metrics. In addition, the granting of licenses socket benefit smaller clients using single-socket servers.

For existing customers upgrading to Citrix XenServer 6.2, it is win-win because they can convert their server licenses in decision costs without licenses. Each individual server license will be converted to two-socket licenses using a self-managed conversion tool available on citrix.com/myaccount. The license conversion tool will be available from July 17, 2013.

New packaging simplified Price

Another XenServer improvement is simplifying the overall XenServer package and prices. XenServer 6.2 is now available in single edition that includes Software Maintenance, removing the previous Advanced, Enterprise and Platinum editions. Again, a flat product, support and maintenance model ensures consistency with other commercial open source solutions. It offers customers a way to define the value they see in the product and make a simple determination of what the product is right for me and I need support. The cost aligns with the previous price of XenServer Enterprise license except that XenServer 6.2 now includes Software Maintenance (Premier Support and Subscription Advantage) at that price. We are also introducing the annual rating, giving customers greater flexibility in their budget and procurement decisions

  • Annual - $ 500 per socket (License and Maintenance: SA and support ).
  • Perpetual - $ 1,250 per socket (License and Maintenance: SA and support)
