The birth of XenServer.org -

Today, Citrix announced that XenServer becomes a fully open-source project. As part of this we created XenServer.org - a one stop shop for all things XenServer. Whether you are an amateur handyman or a seasoned professional virtualization, xenserver.org is the only place to find not only information on XenServer, but also to communicate via forums with people who share the same ideas about virtualization, open source, cloud and related topics. It is important, now that XenServer is fully open source, it is also the point where you can make a difference by influencing and contributing to the direction and future of either XenServer product suggestions or contribute code XenServer departure.

But first, let's step back, review the recent history and understand the terrain with which development occurs for different components of XenServer

recent history :.

  • 09 : Citrix released XAPI (XenServer management of the toolstack) plus XCP ISOs (a variant of XenServer that contains only open source components) in under open source licenses on xen.org. This marked the beginning of the transition to open source XenServer
  • 2011 : .. XAPI packages were delivered in Debian and Ubuntu, which allows users to build a XenServer as individual packets system
  • April 2013 XAPI moved with Xen.org under the auspices of the Xen project - a project of the Foundation in collaboration Linux. The XAPI project is now a subproject of the Xen project
  • June 2013 :. Creating XenServer.org concludes this journey towards open source. Take a look at Scott Lindars blog post for more on what this means for the XenServer product

This is developed where :.

  • XAPI : development of XAPI components continue in the Xen project (in the sub-project to xenproject.org XAPI). The XAPI project will more closely align with how the Xen hypervisor project works and create a steady source version for powering downstream projects.
  • XAPI The project will work with Linux distributions that contain XAPI packages. A focus area will be an effort to unravel the packaging of XAPI components. It will be easier for Linux distributions to package, build, deliver and support XAPI packages.
  • XenServer and XCP have always been a big codebase, consisting of hundreds of individual software components, which come from many different sources. In a sense XenServer (and ISOs XCP) is a distribution of the Xen hypervisor, the XAPI toolstack, CentOS and other components. Creating XenServer.org formalizes this relationship :. XenServer.org consumes Xen project components, will contribute to the Xen project and will focus on the construction, testing and delivery of this distribution
  • In the future, the XAPI project will focus on developing its components and work with distros downstream, including XenServer.org is just one example. This is a proven model in the Linux world, which is understood and works
  • XenCenter :. XenServer.org will also be home to only Windows components such as XenCenter because they can not be accommodated within the Xen and Linux Foundation project. XenServer.org provide a space for developers to collaborate and contribute to the development of Windows components only.
  • How things change for contributors and users?

    • XAPI developer : No change at all. Contribution to XAPI packages will continue to be handled by the Xen project governance under Xen project. The XAPI project will make some changes to the way it works, but the changes will follow Xen project of Community rules, openly discussed, and made using the process of making Xen project decision. Discussions on consolidating the mailing lists, how to free XAPI, and so began several weeks ago
    • XAPI packages Linux user :. No change at all. Development of XAPI toolstack and packaging of these components are still in the Xen project. However, there will be no immediate update XCP-XAPI packages in Linux distros. Before there could be an update of these packages, the team of XAPI project should provide an independent version of XAPI. Discussion, questions and bug reports for XCP-XAPI packages can be made on the appropriate dissemination distro lists and the Xen mailing list project, the IRC channel or the Q & A system
    • XCP user :. in the past, XCP ISOs were built by Citrix and have been delivered to users via Xen.org. The XCP ISOs have been migrated to the Xen project. By fully open XenServer supply, there is no need to provide new ISOs XCP. XCP ISOs will be replaced by open source XenServer binaries that are available from XenServer.org. The transition to XenServer XCP ISOs should be smooth and painless.
    • No feature will be removed from the XCP
    • users
    • Users XCP 1.6 will be able to upgrade XenServer
    • mailing lists: XCP users have been supporting each other through mailing lists ( xen-api@lists.xenproject.org ) and the IRC channel # xen-api is not going away. But we hope you will find useful resources on XenServer.org.
    • Users wishing to contribute fixes and improvements in XenServer will be able to do so via the xenserver.org community. The changes being made to the structure of XenServer will be easier to rebuild individual packets to test the changes of candidates
  • XenServer users :. Xenserver.org the community will be a great place to discuss best practices XenServer, get visibility on the roadmap XenServer, engage with developers and product managers XenServer and influence the direction of XenServer.
  • roadmap! Where will XenServer?

Our high-level roadmap is under the Software tab on the home page of xenserver.org. As you will see, XenServer has a promising future. Our journey in full open source promises an even better product than we realize the contributions of xenserver.org community. Join the conversation and contribute as we XenServer the best platform for the cloud and the best open source platform server virtualization!

    What to expect from XenServer.org

So this is just the beginning of XenServer. org. We will start by releasing the source code and binary providing users to download and install. For now, we will provide mailing lists and still use existing forums provided by Citrix. Over time, we will transition into this site. In addition, we will add all the things you expect from an open source project, including a way to track bugs, feature requests and interact with the developers to work on the code. We also include a number of ways to ask questions and get help through mailing lists, forums, and our Q & A system

What you can do now :.

If you have not tried before XenServer, download the new XenServer 6.2 here. It's free! Just burn iso and load it. You can really have XenServer running in ten minutes. And of course, the open source ISOs are available in one place.
