A number of Citrix products such as XenDesktop, XenApp, Provisioning Services and XenClient, require a database to store the configuration parameters and in some cases the information to execution and the change log. Because of these dependencies of the database design is a vital part of each Citrix Architecture Design.
Most of the information needed to design a database platform for hosting Citrix database is publicly accessible, but difficult to find as it spreads across many articles the knowledge base or white papers.
to simplify and speed-up the design process, we consolidated the information into one document and augmented with recommendations and best practices. The result of our efforts became part of the latest Citrix virtual desktop Manuel
In the Database section, we will focus on the following design decisions :.
- Database suppliers and Version - platforms databases are available from a large number of software vendors, but what provider Citrix recommends and support importantly- -most
- database Edition - Datacenter, Enterprise, standard, Web, Workgroup or express
- database and log Sizing transactions - What is the size of a database XenDesktop grow when 5,000 virtual desktops based MCS are added to the site? Is it a XenApp environment to 5000 users need a large database and the database XenApp Setup Log
- SQL Server Sizing - Are 2 cores and 4 GB RAM enough resources to host a SQL server database XenDesktop? Does the number of users or virtual desktops impact
- High-Availability - Mirroring, Clustering or VM-level HA? What is the recommended option
- Authentication and Authorization - Windows authentication or SQL authentication, and what are the minimum permissions required for normal operations
The current version still focuses on XenDesktop 5.6, XenApp 6.5 and XenClient Provisioning services 6.x Enterprise 4.5, but we actively working on updating the Citrix Virtual Desktop Manual, including database chapter. We hope to have an initial version Q4 loan early. Stay tuned ...
