CloudPlatform Master Class FAQ -

Last week we demonstrated the capabilities of our product CloudPlatform to more than 1,300 people living on our Cloud 101 Master Class. In these webinars, we not only live demonstrations of a complete installation and configuration of a base area of CloudPlatform, we also answer hundreds of questions on the fly to help people get up and running with technology . We had a number of questions that have been raised many times, so I thought I would take a little time to answer the main questions of our Master Class.

Is this recorded session?

Probably the most asked question on a webinar out there today, especially those that cover a large amount of technology in a relatively short period of time. Yes, we store all of our Master Classes if they are on CloudPlatform, XenServer and NetScaler; and we make them available on CitrixTV. You can find the recording of our CloudPlatform 101 class here: http://www.citrix.com/tv/#videos/7530

What is the difference between CloudPlatform and CloudStack [1945003?]

Sometimes with these two products, it seems that their names are used interchangeably. So what is the difference?

Back in April 2012, Citrix announced the first building block of its platform strategy of aggressive cloud submitting its open source platform CloudStack market leader in the Apache Software Foundation, home of the world's most successful open source projects. While Citrix is still a contributor to CloudStack project, it is completely open source and managed by the Apache Foundation.

Citrix CloudPlatform system is the first commercially supported cloud orchestration based on Apache CloudStack. It aims to ensure that organizations can build cloud production environments on an open source platform designed for economics, elasticity and scale - with a commercial commitment and support of Citrix. With premium support offering, CloudPlatform also includes the right to XenServer Advanced that allows customers to leverage the advanced features included in the hypervisor level.

Can I migrate to CloudStack to CloudPlatform?

At this time there is no upgrade path for Apache CloudStack to the current version of Citrix CloudPlatform. While CloudStack and CloudPlatform both share the same open source core platform, they press cycles. These different release cycles mean faster development time, but also create a situation where the two code bases will naturally diverge and converge again to release a release. In order to present the shortest path to a commercially supported solution, it is recommended that users who are interested in a commercial engagement with Citrix begin their evaluation with Citrix CloudPlatform 0 day trial.

Can be mixed multiple hypervisors in a cloud of CloudPlatform?

Of course! In the opinion of Citrix is the future of the cloud is all about openness, so we designed CloudPlatform to support as much as possible hypervisors. While all hosts in a cluster (also known as the farm or at the pool in terms of server virtualization) must be virtualized on the same hypervisor, you can mix multiple clusters with different hypervisors in a pod or zone . Today, we support XenServer, KVM, OVM and vSphere.

What are the options for storage?

With CloudPlatform there are two types of storage, primary and secondary. Primary storage is where virtual machines live while the secondary storage is where your templates are hosted. primary storage medium varies depending on the hypervisor you use to build your cloud environment, but typically includes local, iSCSI, NFS and Fibre. For secondary storage NFS or we support OpenStack Swift.

How do I start?

Yes, believe it or not, after a few hours on one of our Master Classes people were ready to dive into the product themselves. For those of you who are ready to begin evaluating the CloudPlatform solution we have a trial and a lot of free documentation to get you started:

  1. Download trial CloudPlatform 0 days
  2. Read our product documentation, including the installation Trial Guide, release Notes, developer's Guide
  3. Find all the resources of our CloudPlatform Master Class

Like I mentioned, there were hundreds of questions about the webinar last week and I have covered some in this post. If you are interested in attending a future Master class cloud so you can ask questions of your own, register now for one of our upcoming sessions.
